Pearl light gray is lighter than flat silver. I'm sure there are some picture
comparisions you can find online somewhere. Honestly, your best bet is buying
a couple parts for comparision and I would suggest buying parts that only came
in one of those colors, and not ones that came in both colors. That way you
can be sure that the seller didn't accidentally send you the wrong color.

I've dealt with this a lot over the last 18 months.

Here's my best method.

Lay all the parts of the same mold out in the same orientation on a flat surface.
Then, instead of looking at them straight on, move your head off to an angle
off to the side or put the parts at near eye-level. You should find that some
"appear" shinier or darker. The darker ones are Flat Silver, the others are Pearl
Light Gray.

Your mileage may vary using this approach, but it's worked for me pretty
well so far.

Pearl Light Gray is 131 Silver, and Flat Silver is 315 Silver Metallic (which
replaced 131 around 2010). Unfortunately BrickLink also calls many 131
parts in polypropylene Flat Silver.

Long ago (in a galaxy far far away) I tried to make the case that they are (from
TLG's perspective) the same color. Since then, the general consensus seems
to be that they are molding variations of either the same color, or two colors
so close as to make this difficult. One of the images in this thread tends to
agree. My analysis, way back in the beginning, was based on part replacement
web pages (at lego.com) which were being coded with the same color number on
parts that BL thought were Flat Silver and/or Pearl Light Gray. Some of this
has to do with personal perception and some of it is how the part was produced.

Nice!

I wish we had equivalent color separation for the darker (reformulated) pearl
gold, to flat silver/plg and old star wars grey/bley. But the parts are already
listed and it'd be an unfair burden on the sellers to change things now

Well, Lego considered those spears two distinct colors (131 and 315), as well
as the two light grays (2 and 194). But those golds are all just endless variations
of the same color: 297 Warm Gold.

So, in other words, the 297 Warm Gold stock is marbled, albeit very very slowly...

Thanks for the explanation!

Hardly.

If you choose one, the buyer will complain he sees another one.

BL has "usually" and such, as finally, it... depends:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1096&q=flat+silver

I've no solution for this - apart maybe a big picture of each version in
the 2 different colors which would serve as a definitive reference?

Catalog people we bored and didn't know what to do, hopefully I can help
