I just found the Motorized Hogwarts from 2004 in a bulk buy and I can't get
the motor to work. I'm trying to figure out what the culprit is. The regulator
green light comes on and turns a fainter green when I turn the knob left or right...
I think this is working as it's supposed to. However the train motor does
nothing. The wires on: "Dark Bluish Gray Electric, Train Track Contacts with
Wire and 2 x 2 x 2/3 Brick" are a bit frayed, but I don't want to assume
that's what's bad and sell the train motor if it's not working.
I also don't want to assume the wire is bad and toss it since it's a
$50+ part.

Any suggestions on how to figure out what's working and what's not?
I've got newer power function trains and an older monorail as well as a big
bag of old random LEGO motors and wires, but nothing else 9V that I'm aware
of to help me figure it out.

A quick test is connecting the output of a 9V battery across the wheels.

The cables that connect the power supply to the teack are quite fragile and the
track might also have degraded.

Clean the contacts and the wheels- that's usually it in my experience.

I don’t have much experience with trains. Does the 9v track need to be a complete
loop to work? It appears that one piece of track is damaged so I didn’t know
if that breaks the circuit.

You do NOT need a complete loop of track for power to run thru the rails and
make the train motor work.

If you have other regular 9-volt electric wires, you can attach one directly
onto the 9-volt train motor to test is using either the train controller or a
regular 9-volt battery box.

In case anyone looks back at this in the future, here's what worked for me:

The wheels turned on the motor with a separate wire, so that verified that the
power supply and regulator were working.

The motor still wouldn't run on the track, so I used a pencil eraser on the
wheels as they spun. I put it back on the track and now it runs fine via the
separate wire. This verified the tracks are good and the motor is good as well.
So it looks like my "Train Track Contacts with Wire and 2 x 2 x 2/3 Brick" is
indeed the culprit. I figure I'll still list this as non-working at a heavy
discount since someone can probably fix it.

Thanks for the tips!
