Hi

I have this weird case where the buyer ordered from my store and send me his
own shipping label with tracking number. He said he had a better price on his
side. I say ok, no problem.

Order was returned to me because the buyer failed to pick it up at the post office
within 14 days. Of course I have to pay fees on the returned package.

I contacted the buyer a first time to inform him of the returned package and
the fees. He tells me to keep the order and that he will recontact me.

A few days ago I recontacted him again because I'm closing my store temporarily
for the holidays and asked him clearly if he wants me to cancel the order and
refund the money or if he wants me to ship it again, and charge him shipping
and the extra fees.

He said to cancel the order but keep his money. I'm not sure what I should
do, especially since the amount of the order is a few dollars more that the fees
that I had to pay. I don't want to risk any negative feedback or recourse
against me, etc.

Thanks for your advice.

Personally, if it was me I'd refund his original order as it just feels the
right thing to do but not too sure otherwise as a bit unusual. It doesn't
sound like they would give you a neg by the sounds of what you've said.

Thanks for your advice.

The problem if I ship the order again and he still doesn't pick it up, I'm
going to have to pay the fees again. They were of 25 dollars the last time. I
was thinking just cancel his order as he said ok to cancel it and refund him
the difference of his amount minus the returned fees.

It doesn't matter if you refund none of it, a bit of it or all of it, the
buyer can still leave negative feedback against you and also complain to paypal
that they had not received (so keep the tracking number anyway).

Buyer can leave negative FB even if you refund the entire amount.

I would do as the buyer says. Message the buyer and tell him if anything changes
over the next 6 months his package is waiting for him (6 months is the amount
of time for when the order purges from BL as well as the maximum amount of time
a PayPal claim can be filed). If nothing happens after 6 months you can put the
pieces back into inventory.

You could even *increase* the chance of receiving bad feedback by *not* doing
what the buyer wants. I had a recent order where the buyer included a message
requesting that a printout of his order be included in the package. Ok, no problem,
I do this anyway. Later on I looked at FB this buyer left for others and there
were quite a few neutrals left for sellers because "I requested a printout of
the order and the seller didn't include one".

Yes, Canada Post charges counter rates for a package returned (so you have to
pay again, and these are counter rates, so might be even higher than you paid
for sending it out). The label you attach on the package actually has this policy
spelled out at the very bottom.

We use a "flex delivery" address (a sort of post office box) so anything sent
back will end up in the hands of our post office. The few times we had a shipment
returned to us, I go to the post office, check the outside of the package (which
has the order number), check what was shipped, and decide whether I want to pay
to get it back or have CP destroy it.

Niek.

My heart bled a little when I read that.
