"Pizza Cheese Yellow"? Sounds kind of appetizing to me... but don't try
to eat it, or you'll end up with a chipped tooth or two!

I have to agree. Even a non-AFOL would immediately think of that same color
when they read the name "Neon Yellow."

C’mon, get your creative marketing skills on. You need something with pizazz!
A name that glows like the vibrant color itself.

Something like Firefly Yellow. You ever seen the vibrant yellow a glowing
firefly produces in the dark?

Let's get Marek's input

I do too...

Knowing the site's position though, it was somewhat tongue in cheek. It is
actually a very good and memorable term for that phosphorescent pigmented ABS
color, imho.

Even though I've argued for what I call the "more Shakespearean over Webster"
approach to naming colors, I do know the value to the catalog of simple descriptors
for colors, especially for the newer-to-Lego demographic: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1253158

BTW, your main interest (expertise) being water beetles: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1133497
is the Lampyridae family of beetles (firefly) considered “water beetles” among
you entomologists? Can't seem to find a definitive answer to that.

-Thanks

Lampyridae are mainly terrestials only some species can have aquatic living larvae,
like those for example https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/WB-China_3_0539-0562.pdf (There
is a few words about it in the article introduction section)

Greenish glow in the dark, could be a New Jersey thing

Yeah, depending on their environment (type) they can illuminate a wider color
spectrum, primarily yellow though for the Photinus Pyralis or eastern firefly,
the most common in North America. But maybe will get our former Catalog Admin
and resident entomologist to chime-in with with the real story. Always enjoy
learning.

They definitely illuminate a more greenish tone in Ohio, also, but it is a close
match for this new color.

Stabilo Boss Yellow

Or is that a European brand only?

One from me, as well. (It is also worth noting that the colour is already
being referred-to as “Neon Yellow” in discussions on other sites).

+1
BrickLink Color names are they way they are to be recognizable by anybody that
gets here, not just AFOLs. Sometimes they get longer descriptions because changes
in Lego shades and we have to fit them within the existing ones, but still better
suited IMHO.

By the way, am I the only one who is (still, after all these years) confused

"trans bright green" is actually "trans neon green" for me.

To be fair, here is Transparent Fluorescent Green next to Transparent Fluorescent
Yellow. Maybe "Trans Neon Lime" would be more appropriate, if we were renaming
entrenched colors :p

Trans-Neon Green refers more to the definitely green color you see under UV light.
In daylight conditions it is indeed more yellowish.

maybe Neon Lemon, but I wouldn’t want to confuse it with color 15 LEMON (only
recognized by BL in its Modulex form but exists in several Duplo parts)

I like it!

maybe Neon Lemon,

Even better!

recognized by BL in its Modulex form but exists in several Duplo parts)

I am leaning towards having it added as Neon Yellow myself.

Please keep it simple, use the LEGO name if possible. What happens if LEGO releases
a Neon Yellow in a few years time? There is enough confusion for historical reasons,
let us not add to that.

Let's say you knew nothing about LEGO or its colors.

Now let's say I ask you which one is "Vibrant Yellow"? This new color, or
https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/14999315097/

I would guess that responses would be all over the place.

Now let's say I ask you which one is "Neon Yellow"? This new color, or https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/14999315097/

I have a feeling that the vast majority would pick this new color.

That is what I base my thinking on.

I really couldn't care less what LEGO names it.

I really couldn't care less what LEGO names it.

I get it, ultimately the best descriptor for catalog use to the broadest demographic
of Lego consumers.

But it also can’t be ignored that it’s color we’re addressing (not shapes, sizes,
etc) and what colors mean to us. They affect us by evoking feelings or emotions,
mostly unawares. In other words, there’s more to factor beyond straight catalog
terminology when considering how best to label or identify the many colors of
Lego, imho. Maybe also consider how we relate to a given color as Lego is slightly
more incline towards, i.e. “vibrant” yellow.

All that said, I’d give up my “Firefly Yellow” for “Lemon” or “Neon Lemon”

And why should you care? You’re not a seller, You don’t have to correctly pick
and inventory stock and you don’t have to worry about dealing with buyers who
may think they’re buying one colour when in fact they’re buying a different colour
entirely!

Vibrant Yellow.

One of Bricklink's main selling points is the fact its catalog is so much
better than Lego's own way of categorizing things. If we started to adopt
their catalog, that would be a serious step backwards. There will be lots of
strange names that don't make sense. And adopting only some of them while
not adopting others leaves us with the same inconsistency that we already have,
so we'd win nothing.

I would go for "flourescent Warning yellow" or what the real english name for
this is.
Nonetheless, i find a decent adition to the color chart. I like it.
Soon some Space Mocs will probably show up as well.

Or we could just call it whatever Lego calls it?

If Lego calls it Sun Blitz Yellow (I have no idea of actual name) then there
is logic to using that same wording not only because of my previous argument
of continuity between Lego and BL but also because Legos somewhat random wording
removes the need to try and slot new colours within Bricklinks existing colour
pallete because as Legos colour pallete continues to increase it wont be long
before were trying to slot a new shade between existing colours and having to
use wording like:-

Very very light bright trans neon light yellow

No no NO.

Naming colors is the apex of forum activity.

We should be free to invent until 31/12, al least.

lolol just saw the comic, I'm honored

I never once said BL should call this color what Lego calls it, though, that
was infinibrix. I was just giving info. As long as BL colors don't line up
1:1 with Lego colors, it's probably for the best that the names don't
match either. I have no dog in this "fight", I'm a descriptivist

How about their definition of brown? BL Brown is the original shade and Reddish
Brown is the replacement. Lego doesn't differentiate the shades but a buyer
would be upset to get reddish brown when expecting brown and vice versa.

What? "old brown" is Lego's 25 EARTH ORANGE, and Reddish Brown is Lego's
192 REDDISH BROWN. BL's Medium Brown is 217 BROWN and BL's Earth Orange
is 12 LIGHT ORANGE BROWN. The names may be confusing if you're only used
to BrickLink's, but to say that Lego doesn't differentiate those just
isn't true.

Ooh, nice. I look forward to seeing this color in person.

I vote for sticking with the LEGO color name, Vibrant Yellow. (Yes, I also advocated
for Vibrant Coral as well.)
