Hello everyone,

I´ve just got my first chargeback via Stripe. I am not sure but it seems that
a user has used a stolen credit card. He opened an account on bricklink with
this username: markapope
He tried to buy a product 4 times in my shop. But the payment didn´t work. So
it was cancelled. One day later, he opened another account on bricklink with
this new username: matthias45

Now the payment worked. I got an order, shipped it to the adress. Everthing seemed
to be good. One week later I was informed by Stripe that the Bank SANTANDER UK
PLC will book back the price of the order because of a potential fraud (4,37
EUR). On top of that, they charged me with a 15 EUR processing fee. So this fee
is about 3 times higher than the complete order.

I was really shocked about this. I have now sent a few documents which will be
studied by the bank SANTANDER. They will make a final decision. But only a decision
about the 4,37 EUR price. The fee is finally set.

So my questions are: Do you made similar experiences? Is it possible that I refuse
this chargeback? Is this fee really legal?

For me I made a decision: Never ever work again with Stripe. I would have guessed
that they protect me. But they did nothing and tell me that it´s all on the bank.

Sorry to hear this.

A chargeback is legal and you cannot stop it. Stripe is also legally obliged
to cooperate with the bank.

What I don't understand is how the bank can charge you a 15 euro fee when
you are a victim in this as well. it is a disgrace to be honest. Don't think
you can do much about it. I think PayPal would have given you better protection,
but they also charge a processing fee if there is a Chargeback. It is al very
unfair.

Isn't it the card networks (VISA, Mastercard, etc) that charge this fee,
not the banks. I think the idea is that charging a fee for chargebacks is meant
to discourage seller behaviour that leads to chargebacks. But of course it doesn't
help when there is buyer fraud.

I am not sure, I think its the banks, as they need to process the chargeback.
But I don't know if the banks do this, because the card issuer is charging
them with a fee. Yes, it is unfair on the seller if it is buyer fraud. The link
I posted talks about it, how buyers these days use chargebacks more and more
to defraud the seller.

Thats fine, but remember that Paypal will have the same fees regarding chargebacks.
The only way to prevent all this is IBAN payments but then there is no buyer
protection. An IBAN payment cannot be reversed.

First of all: I like your pic

Paypal has an additional seller protection. That sounds like it will be a bit
easier for the seller if he gets cheated.

Stripe will refund the fee if the bank ruled in your favor.

We had one, a new buyer filed "product was deemed unacceptable" right after receiving
it. We contacted buyer asking which parts were unacceptable - He ordered a bunch
of them - No answer.

We filed response, gave as much information as possible. Order detail with communication,
his new user status, our good standing etc. Also store terms since it asked return
policy.

GOLDMAN SACHS BANK USA did the right thing. Good luck!

For a fee stripe also offers chargeback protection. You can find details here:

https://stripe.com/pricing#radar-pricing

Chargeback Protection
Defend your business from the unpredictability of disputes. With Chargeback Protection,
Stripe will cover both the disputed amount and any dispute fees—no evidence submission
required.

0.4%
per transaction

Not sure how to set it up but it seems worth it for the peace of mind.

So, it’s worth it if 0.4% of all your Stripe transactions is less than the number
of chargeback times €15.

Good point.

I like to pay for the peace of mind after a few really large chargebacks, but
I suspect you're correct on the calculations

Servus,

I stopped using Stripe this week for this reason. I had several purchases that
made no sense from brand new Users and I refunded them right away and stopped
using Stripe.
I understand this might cost me some orders, but so far, I have about 2% of the
customer paying via Stripe and it is not worth the hassle.

Sorry to hear you had problems, but maybe you can work something out that they
will not charge you as it is not your fault. You can not sell and do their job
of checking everything as well.
