| I'm a longtime Bricklink member, but am trying to set up my store to sell
for the first time. For some reason, I'm having trouble setting up shipping,
it just isn't making sense. More like it's overwhelming. I want to offer
rates straight from USPS, none of the 'Shared Shipping Methods', etc.
Something simple where I enter box dimensions and weight, and the sending and
receiving addresses, and can then see all shipping options available to me (just
like pirateship.com). Is this possible? Or does it have to be a customized shipping
method?

| No, I don't think BL has updated the USPS info for quite some time, so you
would be undercharging buyers.
I recommend researching the rates and coming up with some fixed pricing that
will meet both your needs and fair for buyers. Instant checkout with first Class
mail will be the easiest, especially if you use something like PayPal to print
labels.

There is (currently) no way to do live from USPS and zone-by-zone shipping on
BL. You have to do compromises, or issue manual invoices (with manually supplied
shipping numbers).

To dumb it down, you essentially set up weight bands where you "guess" shipping
costs.
The only way to not guess is to manually invoice all orders.

Just do manual invoices and shipping, the system makes no sense. I don't
know why Bricklink can't just do like every single other site on earth and
allow you to enter size and weight and calculate it for the buyer using the usps
or ups api. I really honestly do not know why this site is still like 1998.

Well, it is written in ASP which was released in 1996 is likely why is seems
like it is 1998 technology wise.

There are many reasons why using a system to estimate a package cost for a LEGO
order is extremely complicated. Most bricks ship in bubble mailers. All those
would probably work in a generic system. Then you have:
fragile parts that must be boxed
baseplates
sets in boxes that need extra protection against damage
instructions
electronics and magnets
parts that are too big for some postal services
etc, etc, etc
which all need their own parameters and packing requirements. All of these can
be combined and purchased in one order and the system needs to somehow know what
to do with each and how they might affect each other...
But yes, BrickLink not using the USPS API to at least let us charge for postage
by zones is very old-fashioned.
