As someone newer to bricklink, I must say I never understood the reason for the
forum, now especially. There are so many better ways of communicating with other
sellers and the forum seems so outdated! That is why I’m really happy something
like the bricklink server exists i really think you’d enjoy it there! There is
plenty of discussion both About bricklink, or just our lives! You and anyone
else who misses the activity on the forum should give it a shot!

Thanks but…

The time I’ve spent here, although fun, has not been the most productive hours/days
of my life. So when I quit this place, I’ll not be joining other forum-type activities.

I’m blissfully ignorant to the world’s social media and forums and how they operate.
In not knowing what other such platforms are like, I’m happy as a clam here.
The few times I’ve found myself over on Law’s site over the years, I visited
the forum but I don’t recall ever posting or navigated around there. Intentional?
No doubt.

I know that it’s not a good thing, being “blissfully ignorant” And my eyes have
been opened (from comments here) in how the BL forum is perceived more broadly,
with adjectives such as outdated and clunky coming to mind. I understand the
realities but not empirically, let's just say.

Thanks for the insight and advise, nonetheless

A few random thoughts ...

My view, after being around here for slightly more than 21 years, is that BL
has stabilized. But not in a boring way. Things are better than they were in
the wild wild west of the first couple of years. When BL (nee BB) was very young,
and before it had gained much inertia, there were factions that wanted to defect,
if not topple it. They were, all talk and no action.

BL is now a destination site, at least for LEGO products. Outside of lego.com,
it is the place to shop (and no disrespect to BO). I think there are still some
things that BL could do to make the experience better, and I do suggest them
from time to time. There are a few more to suggest, as my thoughts coalesce.

We are a community, and a community comes with all colors, shapes, genders, and
attitudes. Hopefully we can find a way to get along with one another. We all
have a right to be a PITA at times, provided that we do so with respect for one
another. When the respect leaves the room, is where we lose confidence in one
another.

Posting is easy, type something and/or hit reply. Stopping, reading what you
wrote, before hitting post, is sometimes harder. We all have a responsibility
to be a better member, for that is what we all are here ... members. We all,
or perhaps almost all, want to see BL still be here after 30 years, 40 years,
or after we are all gone, because BL is actually a little bit of all of us. Even
the person that contributes one picture or one weight, is part of what made BL
what it is today. Without the members, it would be nothing.

Compared with some forums I've participated in the past, (90's and early
2000's) with their regular epic flame wars, I always though of the Bricklink
forum as quite genteel.

But certainly things have quietened down considerably from only a few years ago.
Whether you consider it chaos, or entertainment, now it is pretty rare to sit
back with a bowl of popcorn to watch the forum lawyers debate.

On the other hand, there are benefits to civilization and putting the "Wild West"
in the rear view mirror. For one thing, one does not see frequent posts from
buyers who just found out they'd been swindled of hundreds of dollars by
fake sellers, and that once seemed like a regular weekend occurrence.

The forum has retained some of its best features, especially that it is still
a place where people freely share their knowledge and experience for the betterment
of the community.

Yes, it has become more an more about the business part of selling lego, but
I appreciate the constant education I get on the forum, as well as the great
work by the moderators.

The Forum is also an integral part of the design of our crowd-sourced Catalog.
Some inventory and catalog requests work through the Forum and are the primary
way in which new members become involved in sharing their data and expertise.

I think many of the people who insist on a more 'modern' Forum aren't
aware of these key functions.

Without switching to an entirely different solution, this forum's behavior
could be overhauled to match modern forum expectations, like having the most
recent commented threads at the top of a top-level post list, instead of listing
a combination of top-level posts and comments in their publication time order.

This would limit heated discussions to a single row in the topic list, even if
it would regularly stay at or near the top of the list.

Being notified of replies on one's own posts would also be nice, and it's
a piece of data BrickLink already has.

Nothing needs to be changed, not not, not tomorrow, not ever; at least until
I die.
Admin: here is a thread that needs to be cancelled. Talking about change, whew....
it never ends.

Honestly, I much prefer to read comments in order of publication. It doesn't
mean that our Forum is out of date as my discord works the same way. It's
just a preference.

Yes. But I don't know that it can be easily implemented. Don't wanna
mess with the spaghetti code. I know it is too much to expect people to search
for replies. I just developed a habit of searching for my name or posts by me
whenever I check in here to keep up with things. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It wouldn't change in that regards, you'd still get the freshest topics
at the top by order of last comment, and then a click on it would bring you to
the regular thread view.

I can't speak about the ease of implementation either. I know a couple of
the technical prerequisites exist, but it just means it wouldn't be even
harder to implement.

Oh, I see what you mean. Makes sense! I guess I do something close to that when
I choose Sort Messages: Without Replies and can see how many comments all the
recent threads have. I have the Sales topic blocked, so I feel like I see most
of the relevant conversations this way.

I’ve also witnessed the forum move slowly in that direction over the years, to
be honest with some melancholy. I’ve got that eternal optimism disorder those
close to me often find irrational, but which means it’s hard to give up thinking
the best of BL and it’s forum.

That it’s rarely a zero sum game, in that the forum can be both a place of fun
and information, where you come to both share of yourself and help others. Have
some excitement via drama or otherwise, and get some answers. Both find n'offer
distraction from our everyday routines and burdens. Share not only of your site-knowledge
but of yourself. Have more enjoyment, iow.

I know that I’m a pain in the butt to some, with the endless contests and other

We can definitely relate to this overall sentiment regarding the forum;
As the primary contributor and follower of the forum for The Heart Bricker crew,
here’s my perspective;
- I truly believe in the principles of The Secret (book); positivity and optimism
will “attract” positive results- this forum has not been a positive source to
draw optimism in quite some time which is why I’ve not been as drawn to it recently
and have been less active.
- Years ago; posting our issues of technical difficulties and other difficulties
with the platform has yielded positive results from its operators and also gave
consideration to suggestions. It no longer feels like that; it frankly feels
like technical modifications and functional changes are done without any consultation
or regard to users input.
It a little disheartening to be participating in a system that gives no regard
to your input so we feel like it’s a lot easier for us to adjust and accept changes
even if they inconvenience us instead of responding negatively (again; because
we’ve adopted the upper mentioned positive principles)
- While we are grateful and appreciative of every single person that is involved
with the Maintainance and operation of Bricklink; it seems like the Bricklink
team is working with very limited resources and seems demoralized by being overstretched
and under appreciated - which leaves users who need assistance frustrated.
To sum up; the forum used to be a bright spot and positive resource for users
to share constructive; ideas, statistics , gratitude , advice and get positive
feedback from the community and operators.
In the past few years it has mainly been a source of negative reviews, comments,
complaints, bickering and grievances which is not too inviting for an optimist.
On the positive side; in the past few years; this site has yielded very positive
results to users who have kept focusing on the business end and grew their shops
while overcoming some technical difficulties so it’s only natural for an optimist
such as myself to invest my time and energy on the positive side rather than
the forum.
Peace.
