Interesting note: Of all the sources from which I might've received notification
of this, it was my bank that sent out the email. Oh well

Facts are facts. As for profitability, the postal service says it best:

It's already slow (takes 2 days to get from my post office to Boston or
Shrewsbury (Massachusetts) which is a distance of 10-15 miles.

That was quite an interesting read. Now I understand how slowing down the delivery
from 1-3 days to 1-5 days can save some money. Now, however, I need a drink.

Is October 1 the day that they change their behavior or the day that they official
acknowledge their behavior?

So, my take goes somewhat like this ...

The "1-3 Days" was what USPS calls a Service Objective. One day has been
almost non-existent, unless you happened to live in a city which hosted an NDC,
or possibly a P&DC, and you were mailing to the same city. So 2-3 days was more
likely. For many years, some of the ePostage services (e.g. Pitney Bowes) have
been ignoring the 1-3 days, and quoting 2-5 days (for FCPS). That has generally
been a more reasonable estimate.

The problem here, is that USPS administration has to generate reports that indicate
how well they are meeting their service objectives. Handling packages that in
reality take 2-5 days, has caused their ability meet service objectives to look
not so great. Changing the service objective to 1-5 days is not really going
to slow things down, so much as it's going to make their reports look so
much better (because 4 and 5 days now become within their objectives.

USPS has issues, and I expect competitors to try to take their parcel business
away, anywhere they can do so and compete on price. The real problem is that
USPS First Class has suffered majorly from email and electronic payments. Those
will never be replaced.

About a month back, I was in line at a dollar store. The woman ahead of me was
talking to the checkout employee, and pitching a fit about the cost of postage.
I looked at her and injected my 2-cents into the conversation by suggesting that
she go buy 52-cents of gas, and drive the letter to California personally. She
glared at me. First Class letter mail should really be around $1, but that's
more about politics and why it will cause all kinds of blowback.

2 Cents? I'd say you injected at least a dollar.

Fedex called me yesterday to talk about my gaining my package business. I told
them I'd be happy to talk but the 200+ packages I send every month average
about $3.75 through the Post Office. He said thanks for my time and hung up.

Unless their service goes to 10-14 days or doubles in cost, you just can't
beat the 1st class package rate.

Right. Those are the FCPS, which FedEx ground will be unlikely to match, unless
you're shipping huge numbers per month. They're more interested in the
5-20 pound packages. My peek at their published rate tariffs did not suggest
they will be less expensive than USPS.

The only way that someone will be able to take business (within FCPS) would be
to more efficiently move stuff cross country, then do local entry very close
to the USPS delivery address. I see some stuff moving that way now, but it likely
involves businesses shipping a thousand a day.
