Hey Everyone,

The delivery confirmation for one of the orders I shipped via USPS is in status
"Delivered, In/At Mailbox" as of 3 days ago; however, the buyer has messaged
me saying there was nothing in their mailbox. They have opened up a case with
USPS and will let me know what happens.

I have no reason to believe the buyer is being dishonest in any way, but have
a few questions:

1. The buyer provided me with the USPS claim number, but I can't see a way
where I can observe the status, am I missing something or is that just visible
to the filer of the claim?

2. How long do claims typically take? I've seen forum posts related to multi-week
delays in shipping, but not about how long it takes for a claim to be resolved.

3. There's a possibility that the item will not be found, is there any formal
guidance for what to do in that situation? Looking through the forums there's
lots of stuff regarding the package getting lost at some point prior to delivery
confirmation, but I didn't see anything related to post-confirmation loss.
I also looked through the TOS and didn't see anything relevant, but certainly
could have missed something.

Thank you.

Thank you.

If you shipped with PayPal -- great news! You have Seller Protection, meaning
as long as the tracking shows the package was delivered (and as long as you don't
show a pattern of abusing the system), your money is guaranteed. If the buyer
loses the case, usually also because of a pattern of abusing the system, you're
fine. If the buyer wins the case, PayPal will pay them and you'll keep your
money. And that's why I always ship with PayPal, and only to the address
accompanying the payment.

If you didn't ship with PayPal, the result is much more nebulous, and I can't
help much. Best of luck, though!

Thank you for pointing that out, I was not aware of that policy. So sounds like,
in the worst case that the package is never found, the buyer should file a claim
with PayPal, they'll get their refund and I won't be out of pocket either.

I would try to work it out with the buyer - ask them to check with their neighbors,
the local postman (post person) to see where they might have delivered it, also
the post office can tell them exactly where it was delivered. The other possibility
is that someone stole it off their porch or front steps. In general I wouldn't
rely on Paypal to keep your money safe- they usually side with the buyer .

Thank you.

USPS is becoming more and more of a joke. I've had packages delivered the
next street over, same house number. Like, completely different street name,
but same house number. Have them check with their neighbors first, as that's
another fun trick US Postal does with alarming frequency. Pay more, get less.
That should be the US Postal motto.

Good idea, thank you for the suggestion;I'll mention that in case the buyer
hasn't already checked around.

I just had this happen to me as a seller a couple days ago. I opened a USPS
case, the buyer opened a USPS case, and USPS responded to me within 3 days that
they confirmed the package was delivered to the buyers' mailbox. Apparently
the buyer is claiming several other packages delivered that day were not there.
I've heard that USPS has GPS on delivery now so they can recheck where they
delivered, so they've advised the buyer to open a police report for stolen
property.

The bottom line is that, as a seller, your responsibility ends when the order
gets delivered. There's nothing you can do about a stolen package.
