| I placed an order with a USA seller. Auto checkout and order paid in full.
Seller messages that the shipping is going to cost $4 more than what I already
paid and that I needed to send more money. I maintain that clearly he set his
shipping bands to not account for shipping materials. It is not my fault and
he should ship the order for the amount that I originally paid. Should I pay
or should he just ship the order and take the loss for his error?

| As a business owner I use these moments to learn. He/She should fix the mistake
and ship even if they take a small loss. No, you shouldn't be asked to pay
extra. If you think he's honestly trying to cover real costs and he's
not trying to get more money from you then maybe consider working with him.

He has since canceled the order for $4.

Doug,
Well said. I agree with you completely. A four dollar mistake is not much considering
how much international shipping is from USA. It also doesn't make sense
to me because the weight bands for USPS, assuming that is what is being used,
is much more than $4.00USD. The price jumps about $8 to $12USD depending upon
the country.

The cost of postage is outside their control. And with the many changes of rates
in the past two years it is possible they missed or made an error in postage
bands. As a seller you should know if their postage was incorrect when you checked
out. Are you as a seller willing to eat that much postage because of your mistake?

Excuse me ??
Why should a seller know if their postage was incorrect. The seller set the
rates and he should sent the order by these rates.

I will excuse you this time. And a seller should know if the order they placed
could be shipped for that amount by them.

So asking for additional money after the fact is OK if the buyer in the transaction
is also an established seller. But what if the buyer is a brand new member who
has never purchased or sold anything on the internet before? Is it OK to ask
that person for money after the fact?
My first couple years selling I actually had a decreasing shipping scale (shipping
got cheaper as order value went up--I did this to encourage large orders).
My point is that some sellers expect to absord some or all shipping costs and
they know exactly what values they are using in their shipping tables. I still
often cover a portion of the shipping on large orders placed in my store. As
an established seller, should I question every invoice and shipping table I see
if the shipping seems lower than what I would expect to pay for shipping? Remember
that rates can vary widely depending on where and how postage is purchased.

He shouldn’t have asked and no you shouldn’t have to pay, but I certainly would.
$4 sounds like the difference between First Class and Priority which can be caused
by an error of just 1 ounce. The IC system is confusing and it is easy to make
these kinds of mistakes.
It’s not your fault, but it’s not like he was benefiting from your paying the
actual postage costs for your order.
Besides, it would have been a nice thing to do.
My two cents,
Jen

No, you shouldn't have to. It just happened to me as a seller. A couple of
large parts that are "by weight" that I missed when I listed them. I just sent
them anyway eating the extra cost, it feels pretty unprofessional to ask for
more money afterwards.

| I totally agree that this is on the seller. I ate about $5 on shipping a base
plate recently because it didn't account for the heavier box required. Not
the buyer's fault.

I've eaten that much and more, I just chalk it up to the cost of doing business.
