| From the New York Times (which may be a paywall in many cases), USPS is looking
at a Summer rate increase.
| The Postal Service said that the changes would take effect on Aug. 29, if approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission.

Reading that makes it sound like this is for Market Dominant products only (letters
and postcards). No mention of package services. I'll have to dig around the
PRC to see the actual increase request.
Announcing it on a holiday weekend, when everyone's attention is diverted
elsewhere.

| Interesting read, thanks Nita Rae!
Kinda surprised to read that first-class shipping volume is down right now, I
thought it would be the opposite.

Perhaps now that many people are vaccinated, they are less afraid to venture
into physical stores instead of buying online? I think the pandemic created artificially
high levels of online shopping and thus shipping.

USPS breaks their services into Market Dominant and Market Competitive.
The vast majority of the packages that USA BL sellers ship fall under Market
Competitive (i.e. USPS competes with FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc). So it is the Market
Competitive side that has gone thru the roof. If anything, Market Dominant has
seen declines as people use electronic devices to communicate (instead of writing
letters) and use the web to pay bills (instead of mailing checks).
USPS is certainly having problems moving letter mail. I sent four out at the
beginning of April. Two have never been obviously acknowledged received (at ~50
days plus). One was acknowledged at 25 days, and the other at ~14 days. So they
need to streamline package delivery, but also fix letter mail.

I checked the USPS website. As far as I can tell, there is no planned increase
for first class package service or priority mail.

| How is it that when postal services around the world are seeing demand (and presumably
revenue) going through the roof they continue to claim that they need to raise
rates in order to survive?
