Hi friends, I need your help. I am trying to figure out where the value of Bricklink
lies for buyers. It seems to me that you get better value by buying sets directly
from LEGO. So what makes people buy on Bricklink ?

Thanks for your help !

Why pay 100 Dollars for a set when you need a couple of parts that cost you 5
Dollars on Bricklink?

Thanks for your answer. I see what you mean, but it seems to me that by doing
so, in the long run you pay a much higher price per part than you would have
if you had bought a set that contains all the parts you want. Personnally, as
a buyer on a tight budget, this makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

If there was 1000 different lego parts then you could probably do what you suggest.
But by buying that 100$ set you'll end up with hundreds of parts you'll
never use.

?

Personnally, every part I get, as long as I paid a good price for it, is always
good to take. That is because I like to have plenty of parts on hand even if
I don’t need them right away, because when you are building something new you
never know before hand what parts you are going to need next. But I guess not
everyone works that way.

i think your question and your last comment are coming from 2 different angles.

the first question is talking as if you don't have any parts and that you
would be glad to have all the parts in the first set you ever bought.

but your last comment talks as if you have a collection built up...that being
said, lets just say, in your current collection you had enough parts to build
the ucs millennium falcon...everything except the cockpit windshield. so would
you go out and spend $3500+ just to get the windshield and instructions? or would
you just go to bricklink to get the parts you need?

not sure if you've ever been to rebrickable, but go on there and find something
you want to build, buy the instructions and see if you need any parts to complete
it. if so, bricklink is probably going to be your next move.

or just say you want to make a star wars diorama and you need a ton of vegetation
to make a forest....are you going to go buy 150 of the bonsai tree sets just
for the leaves?.....

i can pretty much guarantee you that the ability to source specifically the
parts you need to add to your collection will FAR out price trying to buy enough
sets with the parts you need, and in the end you'll have more parts that
are tailored to YOUR way of building.

So if you're building a town hall and you need 120 of one window, and it
comes per 2 in some set, you will buy 60 sets?

If you're a buyer on a tight budget, then why would you want to pay $100
for 1200 parts when you could pay $5 for the 10 parts you actually need? But
by all means, if you can find a set that contains all the parts you need for
less than you would pay for those same parts on BrickLink, buy it

With that logic, when your car battery dies, buy a whole new car instead of replacing
the battery. You'll get more parts for your money. The problem with that
is you don't need to buy a $10,000+ car, just a $100 or so battery. So you're
actually saving $9,900 by doing that.

Same here. When someone needs 5000 technic pins like someone ordered the other
day, they are saving a lot more money purchasing them here than buying oodles
of sets just to get those pins.

Also, there are tons of pieces and colors that are no longer made, and you can't
get the sets they're in for cheap.Bricklink comes in really handy there.

On BrickLink, you can buy much more than sets. In fact, I would argue that the
biggest business on BrickLink is parts. You can also buy retired sets on BrickLink
and parts that are out of production.

Thanks for your help !

LEGO sells loose parts: currently 1,420 color-part combinations.
Bricklink sells loose parts: currently 66,399 different part shapes and 181 colors.
That's probably around 100,000 color-part combinations.

LEGO sells sets: currently 949 sets.
Bricklink sells sets: currently 16,843 different sets in the catalog, most of
which are available from multiple sellers around the world.

Not counting books, instructions, boxes, gear and minifigures, that are all available
through Bricklink and rarely through LEGO.

Do you get the point? Unless you are looking for the most recent stuff, you simply
can't get it at LEGO directly. That's what this aftermarket called 'Bricklink'
is for. Even prices, speed and service are often better at Bricklink.

Nostalgia!

BrickLink's the easiest bracket of upselling to fall into, as a buyer. To
the average tinkerer, it offers readily available off-production parts, newly
released parts, and/or specific parts. And minimal surplus parts.

At the moment, there are 9,218,201 new and 4,449,393 used

Part No: 2780 Name: Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
*
2780 Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin
according to the price guide. That's 13,667,594 total parts, or about 1.75%
of all of the parts for sale on BrickLink. That's pretty impressive for a
single part in a single color! And that's just one type of technic pin.

Hi friends, I need your help. I am trying to figure out where the value of Bricklink
lies for buyers. It seems to me that you get better value by buying sets directly
from LEGO. So what makes people buy on Bricklink ?

Thanks for your help !

This is why:

Brain: I wonder how many of those 779 million parts are 1x1 round plates and
technic pins...

At the moment, there are 9,218,201 new and 4,449,393 used

Part No: 2780 Name: Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
*
2780 Technic, Pin with Short Friction Ridges
Parts: Technic, Pin
according to the price guide. That's 13,667,594 total parts, or about 1.75%
of all of the parts for sale on BrickLink. That's pretty impressive for a
single part in a single color! And that's just one type of technic pin.

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but how did you find that page? When
I try to search the catalog, this is the page that BrickLink serves me:

It is the V2 version of the catalog index; you get there from the top search
box by NOT specifying 'Catalog' (leave it on 'All items'. It
is not a dumb question; I tend to skip that newer version as well upto the point
of nearly forgetting it exists, as I prefer the to-the-point-ness of the classic
version.
