As I'm impatiently waiting for a couple of untracked packages from Canada
to reach me in the US since I have no way to know when they will arrive, I recall
that in the same order batch I already received a tracked package from Canada
and the shipping fee wasn't higher than for the untracked ones.

Is there a specific condition for Canadian Sellers to obtain a tracking number
for their packages to the US? Or is it a lesser known feature that they can offer
tracking to US Buyers at no/little added cost?

This question is just a thin-veiled beg for Canadian stores to offer tracking
to me personally since I have a hard time dealing with not knowing when packages
arrive. I have been spoiled by the USPS tracking service and I was elated to
find out it could also work with Canadian packages, except few Canadian sellers
offer this feature.

It's about $4-6 more for tracking to the US with Canada Post. It starts around
$7-8CAD for the cheapest untracked packages (such as a small bubble mailer),
with tracking starting closer to I think $13 for that same bubble mailer. It's
not a "little/no" added cost unfortunately. And the sad truth is that it's
actually even more expensive within Canada. That same bubble mailer can cost
me as much as $25 to some parts of Canada. The US is quite spoiled with their
cheap domestic tracking.

We are. But we also complain about our internal costs, because we see Chinese
sellers shipping to USA for less than we can ship internally. What most people
don't understand, is that many (if not all) of those inbound packages are
being entered into the USPS system close to their destinations. IOW, they are
pre-sorting, batching, and doing efficient handling of those packages. Inside
the USA I know of no service that will try to do that, instead we all rely on
USPS, and pay the rates.

Thank you for your answer, here's the data I based myself on to guess it
wasn't that much more expensive to have tracking:

Untracked:
- US $5.35 (CA $6.50)
- US $6.50
- US $6.50 (CA $7.88)
- US $6.95
- US $8.00
- US $10.25
- US $14.00 (!)

Tracked:
- US $8.21 (CA $9.96)
- US $9.03 (CA $10.96)

Granted, it is a small data set, but from it I couldn't really figure out
it would be that much of an extra cost.

In Some Cases it's an even bigger difference, for example, I can ship untracked
letter mail to the USA for $3 CAD (2.47 USD) But with Canada post, It could in
some cases start with tracking at $15 CAD (12.36 USD) Most sellers in Canada
dont use large discount shipping services as there are only a few and either
only offer a slight discount or ones like chit chats offer a large discount
but only have several location country wide. I'm lucky enough to be by one
but most aren't unfortunately.

Most of those #s don't really match Canada Post 100%, even with a savings
discount (because most do not get a huge savings to the US). Attached is a picture
of the cheapest untracked option, and the cheapest tracked option (deduct $1CAD
to get the more accurate pricing for those with a CPC account). The rates get
progressively more expensive every ~250g or so. The only real source of savings
are for sellers who are in the larger cities and have access to Chit Chats with
USPS. They pay slightly higher than USPS rates, but Chit Chats brings the packages
over the border, and then ships from the US side to you. But this isn't very
common. For example, Ottawa only just had its own branch open, but due to its
location, it's not practical at the moment (and would cause delays for the
buyer).

Some sellers will cover some of the shipping cost as well which could explain
rates that you see lower than what I've shown. For example, I offer flat
rate to the US for $9.95CAD on parts/figs orders, but it'll likely cost me
more than that (especially if the order is volumetrically larger). But that $9.96
cheapest tracked rate you have there is either them using Chit Chats and pocketing
a bit extra, or they're covering some of the shipping costs for you.

Thank you for the screens, I've been buying from Canadian shops because of
the attractive USD-CAD conversion that makes parts cheaper to import, if shipping
was more expensive it would probably negate this advantage.

I'm just out of fingernails over waiting for the last two packages of my
latest batch of orders and they just happen to come from Canada.

Interesting how the fuel surcharge is greater for tracked packet than for a small
packet sent by air.

Is a tracked packet generally larger than a small air packet?

No this was based on the exact same #0 bubble mailer at 100g. I think the fuel
surcharge is a %, so because the base cost of the tracked was almost double that
of the untracked, so was the fuel surcharge as well.

To check the prices, go here
https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/information/app/far/business/findARate?execution=e1s1

You can request the seller to ship with tracking so that they invoicce you the
more expensive option.

The only lost pacakge I sent to USA had tracking and the tracking said "delivered"
(I 100% trust the buyer)
If the value of your item is low, don't bother with tracking. Having tracking
does not mean your pacakge will less likely get lost. The package will follow
the same route, with or without tracking.
If the value of your package is high, it will most likely get tracking (and insurance).

Thank you for the link!

I don't want tracking for the delivery insurance, I'd like tracking to
get an estimated delivery date. It helps me to cope with impatience while I wait
for packages. If I have an idea of when they will arrive, it's definitely
easier on me!

And then I can get an alert when they are marked as delivered, which means I
don't have to frantically check my mail every day and being disappointed
until I get them.

Unless your order/parcel will be over 2kg, you have to ask for tracking. Under
2kg are small packet rates and they do not automatically come with tracking.
Until Admin finally gets it through their heads and includes a compulsory yes/no
during checkout for tracking as an option, you need to ask for it. Most sellers
will default to the cheapest shipping to spare their customers somewhat from
Canada Post's decidedly expensive rates.

Read the Terms and Conditions of the store before you place your order. Remember,
when you checkout you have to confirm that you have both read and accepted these
for the system to allow your order to go through. Caveat emptor.

I do rely on the shipping methods available at checkout for tracking, my workflow
where I order from 10-15 sellers at the same time doesn't work very well
with asking for exceptions or reading the full terms of each store.

As a result, I have a personal grace policy of one order. I won't complain
about the first order even if shipping & handling is outrageously expensive,
instead I will put the store on my dislike list to prevent further orders and
I will behave as if I fully agreed with the shipping & handling policy. Because,
like you said, this is what I'm supposed to do when I check a cart out.

I can ship anywhere in the US for a small weight for $10 CDN tracked. People
need to explore some options.

Disappointed update: No news of either packages yet, one was probably shipped
on May 10th, the other on May 17th, I'm contemplating never ordering from
Canadian stores again despite the overall lower part prices thanks to the USD-CAD

In my experience most letter mail envelopes from Canada to the USA take 2-4 weeks
to arrive so hopefully they will arrive soon.

10 or 17th May?!
In average it takes 3 weeks.

A letter without tracking from USA to Canada including sticker sheets took once
about 2 months (before Pandemic) I wrote to seller if he shipped but did not
bug him for refund or anything. I just waited and it got delivered.

If you are so impatient, you can always ask sellers to ship with Express option
or Fedex or UPS? It will cost a lot but you get your order within 3-7 days once
it is shipped.

I hear you, I just don't seem to have the patience for it compared to the
Canadian tracked package that arrived on par with other domestic packages in
the same batch.

It's true, but it would erase the benefit of buying parts marginally cheaper
from Canadian stores thanks to the currency conversion. I don't usually dabble
in very rare parts, so I believe I should be able to find what I want in the
US only, even if I end paying a couple dollars more overall.

Canada Post's delivery standard for small packet to the USA is 5-8 business
days.
That is in normal times, not CoVid times which has caused delays.

If your package was shipped May 10, that makes nine business days, which isn't
any cause for alarm, and certainly not cause to give up on Canadian sellers.
If your package was shipped May 17, that means it has only been four or five
business days so far. That is well within the shipping standard of Canada Post.
You might even consider it remarkable, considering you are ordering from a foreign
country.

I'd be happy to offer you tracked shipping, although I would not recommend
you paying the significance extra cost just for some peace of mind. Developing
patience is probably less expensive.

You're right, I've been conflating both package timelines although one
was reportedly shipped way a full week later than the other.

And I'm not sure the cost of developing patience isn't prohibitive, I've
already purchased a couple LEGO sets totaling US $290 in the meantime to scratch
my LEGO itch.

Still, I'm not entirely giving up on Canadian stores since one of my Wanted
list cost jumps from US $131 to US $153 when excluding Canada, so I could pay
both Canadian sellers US$10 more for tracking over untracked and still be even.

As a Canadian buyer, im usually astonished about the speed it takes things to
arrive even domestically through Canada Post. I recently had a package take 3
weeks to ship from Toronto, which is roughly 4 hours from me geographically,
while i had 2 other packages from Germany and Holland arrive in less than a week.
I dont normally take tracking as im busy enough with other things that i usually
forget about my orders until they show up but still, sometime it just leaves
me scratching my head about Canada Post.

In a frankly unexpected turn of events, today I received one of the two Canadian
packages I was expecting, and to my utter surprise, I discovered that it was
a tracked package, the seller just didn't enter the tracking number in the
order!

I could have known when this package was going to be delivered the whole time!

*cue Luke Skywalker's "Noooooo" soundbite*

I don't blame the seller, as a result of this rather benign omission, shipping
was way shorter than expected and I'm simply glad to have the package on
hand.

The other good news is that this package was the one that shipped later compared
to the other, so I still have good hopes for a forthcoming delivery.

Is it an actual tracking number? The untracked shipments to the US do have a
bar code at the top, but that is only for Canada Post internal handling, not
something mere mortals can type into the CP (or USPS) web site.

The label mentioned "Tracked Package" and featured an actual tracking number,
I was able to input it in the USPS tracking tool and get full tracking information.

Ah, so yes, this is an actual tracking number. Just making sure, as the prominent
bar code atop a non-tracked label throws some customers off (it does say "no
delivery scan" in small letters below it).

I've NEVER had an untracked (knock on wood) shipment to the US lost... ever.
It may take time, but it's really worth the risk to use small packet vs.
tracked packet. Shipping time can really vary. It sometimes takes 4 weeks from
Ontario to BC so to the US 4 weeks isn't unheard of. And, honestly, shipments
from the US to me take 2-3 weeks, too. It's hard to wait, because invariably
by the time I get the parts I don't remember why I ordered them...

Shipping times vary. Long long ago shipping across the country or to the States
was in the 3 to 4 week time frame and steadily improved til it was 4 or 5 business
days ...and then COVID struck. And it appears to be back to the 3 - 4 week range.

Padded envelopes do rarely go missing (delivered to wrong address, buyer lying,
post office or porch theft) but overall very rare.

Or often are the unexplained delays ...Had a padded envelope go missing from
Vancouver to Victoria (90 miles or less), waited and waited and finally after
3 weeks refunded the buyer ...At the 2 month mark the buyer repays me as the
envelope just showed up ...no visible markings or any indication where it had
gone for 2 months.

Or the package(tracked) that made it to the border and thru customs in 2 days
...and then took another week to get to downstate Washington ....and the buyer
blamed Canada Post for the delay ...wahahahah

Thank you for the information, and I do not like these odds, it's been reported
shipped on May 10th, I'd rather not have to wait until June to receive it.

Epilogue: I am now in possession of the second and final package of this Canadian
batch, a whopping 18 days (14 business days) after it was shipped the next day
after ordering. I’m feeling a strong sense of closure after a hectic couple of
weeks. 😌

Thank you for bearing with me, I now have some building to do, another bin to
sort into set, and another batch of orders in about a month. 👋

I may even order from Canadian stores again! 🇨🇦
