Dear BrickLink members,

Based on your feedback to the structure of the BrickLink Designer Program, as well as challenges related to the current Covid situation, we decided to extend the Designer program and postpone the crowdfunding start a bit. This change aims to accommodate for equal opportunities for the designers and maximize the number of designs that can achieve crowdfunding.

What is the new structure?

Instead of one round of crowdfunding, there will be three rounds. For each round, eight to ten projects will be chosen based on feasibility and part availability. The first five of these designs that are successfully crowdfunded will then go into production.

In the illustration below, you can see the difference between the old and new structure.

Will the projects I can crowdfund remain the same?

The designers are currently working hard to make sure that their projects can reach crowdfunding, and we are rooting for all of them to make it, no worries, they are well on their way! The projects available for crowdfunding will still be the ones currently in the BrickLink Designer Program.

The downside to the new structure is that some designs will be available 3-6 months later than with the old structure. On the other hand, that might make it possible for you to support all the projects you like!

When can I start pre-ordering?

Pre-ordering begins July 1st with the first round of crowdfunding. Rounds 2 and 3 will begin in September and November respectively. To see which projects will be ready for the first round of crowdfunding, please visit the BrickLink Designer Program landing page.

You can also visit the FAQ page for more information about the program.

Thank you,
The BrickLink Team

Dear BrickLink Team.
Because you're making changes in Design Program I would like to ask if there's
a chance to remove the 5000 limit on the number of created sets.
I love everything about this initiative except the rat race factor that mentioned
limit creates.
I think some of those awesome sets will become very popular and they could run
out of stock very fast.
It would be a shame to miss the chance to order one of those wonderful builds
just because not being fast enough to purchase.

Dear Errd,

What an absolutely lovely message! I am thrilled that you love the program and
I understand the frustrations with the limited availability.

We did double the number of sets produced from the pilot we did back in 2019,
hopefully this will mean enough for everyone interrested because we are not able
to expand further unfortunately.

Fingers crossed you will be able to get the sets you would like to have.

Limiting it to one of each set per person instead of 5 might help them spread
a little further instead of going straight into the hands of resellers.

After the first ADP they were not meant to be allowed to be resold on bricklink.
Whereas now, it seems LEGO want resellers to purchase by allowing five of each.

If the uptake is greater than the planned initial run (5000) will you reduce
the numbers that individuals can purchase down from the max of 5 so that all
participants can purchase at least one?

Dear Tanja,

I'd love to buy a few sets, and I feel many people would like to do so. Therefore,
I think it is very important to limit the number of sets one account (/person!)
may buy, preferably limited to one per set.
Looking at how fast even non-limited GWP's on www.lego.com are depleted,
or VIP exclusives, and the number of items that are sold on ebay or bricklink
by sellers who have multiple items, I believe that that will the most fair chance
to all of us. The instances where it would seem just for anyone to buy 5 out
of 5000 sets would seem very rare. There would be absolutely no reason to let
buyers have so much when the supply is so scarce.

Two other things: why not ship to any country worldwide? And please would you
provide printed instructions?

Best regards,

Jelle

When do you plan to correct the discrimination of not sending designer program
sets to all EU countries? I can understand that you might limit sending all over
the world, but you can have absolutely no valid explanation why just several
of EU countries are not included. For example, you are sending to Slovenia and
Austria but not to Croatia which is one hour drive from these countries. Same
goes for Romania and Bulgaria which are not included, but you send to Greece?

Hi,

I am wondering About your announcement in the lego developer’s program. Does
this change mean that some of the projects that had to drop out might again be
available in the later rounds? Specifically I am hoping that the seafood restaurant
and the dive shop might become a possibility again.

Allegedly, that creator violated some rule, like having an agreement with a cloner
or selling instructions. It was featured on one of the popular Lego fan sites,
but I don't remember the specifics.

Hi kpierce8,

No, I am afraid not, the projects you mention had to leave the Designer program
due to other obligations. For some projects though, it will allow the designers
a bit more time to adjust their designs to ensure that they are able to make
it to crowdfunding.

How about an announcement rescinding the stupid idea to not produce physical

I am also disappointed that there will only be digital instructions. How do
you get the instructions and will you be able to pass the instructions on if
you decide to give your set to another person? I have built them and then passed
them on to a special needs child for them to build. I may not buy this time
around. It is just not the same.

Same here, I would definitely buy, but only if I get a pdf or some other format
that I can read on *any* device.

Agreed I wish lego would stop trying to push digital integration. It is something
the majority of fans are not interested in.

I don't think I'll be buying any due to this fact, no printed instructions.

Hi,

I haven't been following all this carefully, but have been reading and looking

This is a huge disappointment to me as its one of the strengths of a "real Lego
set".
I believe all of the previous batches of this program did contain printed instructions,
do others know if this is true? I have watched some unboxing videos of last years
batch and they all contained printed instructions.

Are other as disappointed as I am to learn about this quiet and important change
to these products? I am guessing this change was made to reduce costs (&/or improve
profit) but it significantly reduces the value I see in the products.

Yes. Very disappointed.
Does Bricklink understand its customers on this?

It would be good to at least to do a Poll: "Would you buy this set with digital
instructions? Yes/No ".

My answer is NO. And perhaps Bricklink wants to understand why people really
appreciate printed instructions.

Yes, and yes! I am on the computer or device most of the day, when I assemble
Lego, I do it to relax and escape from my day, I don't want to go back on

I can imagine that the reason why there will be no printed instructions is that
it's less interesting for resellers... But to my opinion it would be better
to limit only one copy per set per person/ account.

profit) but it significantly reduces the value I see in the products.

Hi,

I haven't been following all this carefully, but have been reading and looking
at the designs. I recently read the full FAQ and am quite disappointed to learn
that all of the new products will not contain printed instructions, only digital.

Thanks

I seem to remember that there was a question in the faqs stating that if a design
would not make it to the minimum of 3000 sold sets, you could still buy the instructions.
This question is gone though, but would that still be possible?

Is there an official "time zone" start for the July 1st pre-order?

can you tell us the specific directions on where to click etc on how to order these sets when they become available? I am hoping to get a few of them but one in particular would have some sentimental value. Don’t want to miss the opportunity because I couldn’t figure out how to place the order. Yes I am that bad with on line stuff. Thanks

This should be announced before July. It's still early. Right now they're
busy getting the sets tested and production ready. Just keep watching the site.
Last time (afol designer program) it was very easy to navigate. I wouldn't
worry about it now.

Why was it decided to go for digital instructions for the 2nd AFOL Program. This
is AFOL right...? Many of us are buying these sets because Box, Instructions
and Limited Editions.

What will the next program be, just buying a digital design with instructions
to build ourselves in studio??

Is there any chance this will be reconsidered?

WHY NO PRINTED INSTRUCTIONS?

Has this already been discussed a lot?
Has it already received an answer from Lego?
Since we don't know the prices yet on the new designers sets we dont yet
know if this will be accounted for in the prices.

Has Lego said anything about the new sets not having printed instructions?
I am among a significant number of customers that are very disappointed by this.

thanks

The FAQ Page for the Designer Program does not say anything about payment methods.
It would be nice to know how you can pay, before crowdfunding goes live.

Looking at the FAQ. It says 5000 sets of each design and max order qty of 5.
I read that as: The first 1000 scalpers will be able to buy all the sets and
resell at a huge profit!
Why 5 of each set per person and not 1? Why only 5000 sets of each? if the demand
is much higher (which I suspect it will be) Please Lego, learn from the past
fiascos of limited sets such as Ulysses and the Medical Frigate, make sure your
loyal AFOLS get these sets and not the scalpers!

Absolutely agree, there really couldn't be a need to buy more than 2 (1 for
me, 1 gift maybe). Profiteering makes everybody angry and Lego should work
prevent it. Promote love not greed!

Bricklink, you can't be serious - Instructions on app only?

I want to be able to still build my Lego-Set in twenty years, and even further
in the future which will be impossible with an app!

Or can You guarantee, that
- you won't ever take the server down
- that google/apple is still there
- that there won't be a version-change killing compatibility for "old" instructions

What if one hasn't got a google/apple-mobile or -tablet? Yes, those people
do exist!
And even if one has a compatible mobile - the displays are too small to properly
show instructions of detailed Lego-models.

Please print some nice-looking, oldschool instructions!

Agreed, people are willing to pay good money just for the instruction books so
they don't have to use online instruction.

Yeah, I agree

I've read that the instructions will be in 3D in the official Lego instructions
app but we need more informations before the start of the preorders:

- Will the instructions only be in "instruction plus" format (interactive 3d)
or also in pdf?
The 3d instructions seem horrible to follow. It makes you put one brick at at
time with an animation. You can't prepare all the bricks required for a big
step before putting them. It seems very slow to follow.

- If the instructions are also available in pdf, will the pdf be openable in
another application?
The Lego app resets the zoom level each time you change of page... It's not
usable on the small screen of a phone.

- Will there be any kind of DRM?
If the instructions are linked to a BrickLink or Lego account, no one else will
ever be able to build the set.

100% agree! It’s very short sighted to rely on today’s standards for future use.

100% agree! I was looking to buy a couple of these sets, but now I'm not
interested at all. My LEGO room doesn't have space for a computer, I don't
have a tablet, and I am NOT going to attempt to follow instructions on a small
mobile phone!

BrickLink, could you please clarify how the digital intructions will work.
I can't find any specifics on this site. The press release says LEGO Building
Instructions mobile app
only.

Is there going to be a PDF version?
Would you consider to offer printed instructions as an option for people
who want to pay extra for them?
What about DRM? How do you check that only set owners can get the digital
instructions? Are instructions linked to a serial number or unique QR code on
the box or to an account? Are instructions transferable in case the set changes
hands?

Thank you.

Looking forward to it, but please, please, please allow a maximum of one set
of each of the designs instead of five. There is hardly any reason for anyone
to buy multiple copies apart from reselling them for more. When supply is limited,
I definitely find facilitating scalping a bad idea, to put it mildly.

Thank you,

What if allowing people to pre-order multiple sets is what ultimately allows
the project to be crowdfunded, and if a set were limited to one per buyer, perhaps
it wouldn't be produced at all?

Besides, any real collector always buys at least 3 copies:
— 1 to use/build
— 1 to keep pristine
— 1 to trade

(I don’t collect )

I think for the 1st week there should be a limit of 1. After that buying multiples
is fine.

That is of course a possibility, but I am pretty confident that the 5000 mark
for five sets will be reached. Otherwise, initially the number could be limited
to one copy, allowing additional purchases after some time, should there be copies
still available.
Looking at previous GWP's and other items, such as Winnie the Pooh prints
and coins, the demand is almost structurally underestimated, it seems. As a fan,
I am 99.99999 % sure that the castle will sell out.

I am worried about this as well. I want to buy one copy of one
of the sets in the first round, and I am stressed that I won't be able to
buy it. Reducing the number of sets to one per person, at lest for the first
week as suggested elsewhere, makes a lot of sense as it will allow more people
to purchase sets.

Will it be possible to pre-order sets from the project paying by IBAN or it's
required to have a pay pal account?

As the one project of the Round 1 has been postponed and there are only 7 remaining
shouldnt the number of the projects up for crowfunding be decreased to 4? Or
increased in the future Rounds as the competition will now be even bigger than
before?

If no other designer was prepared to meet the deadline for round 1, I can't
see how they would force that to happen.

I think Luk64 meant that, because the first five of each round are to be produced,
projects in the smaller first round will be advantaged relatively to projects
in the other rounds as the other rounds will be bigger, so they proposes to:
— decrease the maximum number of projects that will be produced for the first
round: 4 out of 7 instead of 5 out of 8,
— or increase that number for future round(s): 6 out of 9 instead of 5 out of
8,
— or both, so that 15 projects max will be produced but with better odds for
everyone.

No. They have already set the number of sets they will produce for each round.
And the point of these rounds is to spread the load. It doesn't matter how
many are in the round. I cannot see people being happy if there is one less set
produced overall to try to make probabilities of getting selected in each round
similar.

It does matter how many sets are in the round because now there are only 7 sets
and 5 will be crowdfunded. So most of them. And in round 2 and 3 it will be 9
or 10 projects but only half of the projects will come on stream. So I cannot
see people being happy if their favourites in second and third range will not
be crowdfunded because there were more sets to compete and share the votes. Lets
assume that theresone design that would be the last- fifth to be chosen in its
own round. Now as there will be more sets he wont get his chance and wil be sixth.

It doesn't matter how many are in the round for production. They have a fixed
number of chosen sets per round and a fixed number of each set that can be produced.
If they drop that to 4 it doesn't mean they can do more later as that is
a change in production schedule. The number to choose from per round is irrelevant
for production. It might matter to the designers as the chance of making it go
down but it doesn't matter for production. It is also not an even playing
field due to rounds anyway. Being in later rounds might also affect probability
of being able to buy sets as resellers learn how quick they go, and how quick
they increase in value and sell on the secondary market.
