| Hello,
I have been refurbishing a second-hand set (70226, Legends of Chima, Mammoth's
Frozen Stronghold) and I was missing two "Tile, Modified 1 x 2 Grille with Bottom
Groove / Lip" pieces in Flat Silver. I added them to a wanted list, but before
placing an order I looked to see if I had any in my own collection of loose parts
first. When searching through my collection, I found that I owned two different
variations of 2412b, both with a bottom groove. The variation that occurs in
70226 has sharp grill ridges, however, most of my pieces have rounded edges.
I found parts in my own collection to suit my refurbishment project. However,
I wonder how I would go about ordering a pointed grill variant on bricklink,
should the need ever arise? Is it possible to have a variation added? I realize
that some sets may need to be updated as part of the process, and that there
would be ramifications faced by part sellers. I am attaching a couple of images.
I hope the difference is clear. When placing a rounded variant next to a sharp-edge
variant side-by-side, the difference was quite obvious under good light.
Thank you,
-petri

Good catch! I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the BrickLink catalog
only distinguishes between different variations of a part if there is a functional
difference, like the presence or absence of a groove. Since the two parts you
found are basically identical, I don't think a new variant will be added.

It's interesting if that is how the distinction is made: functionality vs.
aesthetics. It looked obviously wrong when I first picked up a rounded piece
and placed it next to a squared off one. It was like having an incorrect colour.
I have noticed other piece variations that are more understandable. E.g., the
Black "Plate, Modified 2 x 2 with Wheel Holder" used in 1974-3 "Smuggler's
Hayride" is different than the modern variants. (My children broke this set
apart and scattered all the pieces.) When trying to reassemble it, I noticed
that the pin on the underside of the piece that provides the clutch is solid,
vs. hollow. There's no functional difference; and once assembled, there's
no aesthetic difference either. Still, I like to get the correct pieces for
the era when refurbishing my sets. My children also lost the ludicrously expensive
feather from the archer's cap from that set. :-/
