Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 6386 Name: Police Command Base
*
6386-1 (Inv) Police Command Base
347 Parts, 4 Minifigures, 1986
Sets: Town: Classic Town: Police

* Add 1 Part 4592c02 Black Antenna Small Base with Black Lever (Extra)
* Add 1 Part 3070b Black Tile 1 x 1 with Groove (3070) (Extra)
* Add 1 Part 3024 Trans-Dark Blue Plate 1 x 1 (Extra)
* Change {2 to 1} Part Black {4073 Plate, Round 1 x 1 to 4073c01 Plate, Round 1 x 1, 2 on Sprue}
* Change {2 to 1} Part Trans-Green {4073 Plate, Round 1 x 1 to 4073c01 Plate, Round 1 x 1, 2 on Sprue}
* Change {4 to 2} Part Trans-Red {4073 Plate, Round 1 x 1 to 4073c01 Plate, Round 1 x 1, 2 on Sprue}
* Change {8 to 4} Part Trans-Yellow {4073 Plate, Round 1 x 1 to 4073c01 Plate, Round 1 x 1, 2 on Sprue}

Comments from Submitter:
From sealed set contents.
Notes:
There aren't any extra 1x1 plates in white, light gray, trans-red or trans-yellow in my set. So we only have the extra 1x1 plate in trans-dark blue. (And yes I have checked the alternate models - none of them needs more than 5 or 6 trans-dark blue 1x1 plates.) The extra parts which are already in the inventory are correct.

I have found two more very interesting things in my set which will be revealed in another post.

  I have found two more very interesting things in my set which will be revealed in another post.

Okay, here we go:

1)
My set has 1x

Part No: 193b2 Name: Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - with Visor Dimples
*
193b2 Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - with Visor Dimples
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear {White}
and 2x

Part No: 193b1 Name: Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - without Visor Dimples
*
193b1 Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - without Visor Dimples
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear {White}
How should that be displayed in the inventory? My suggestion would be to add
an inventory note to

Minifig No: cop003 Name: Police - Zipper with Badge, Black Legs, White Classic Helmet
*
cop003 (Inv) Police - Zipper with Badge, Black Legs, White Classic Helmet
Minifigures: Town: Classic Town: Police
(and maybe also to the set inventory?) that it can have both variants
and/or to add

Part No: 193b1 Name: Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - without Visor Dimples
*
193b1 Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - without Visor Dimples
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear {White}
as an alternate with unique match ID (like heads with blocked open stud/hollow
stud).

2)
Even more interesting: As we know, this set was redesigned and I have the redesigned
version. But it also includes the parts to build the original design! So they
had added the additional parts without removing one 1x2 plate and one jumper
plate. Should these be extra parts with match ID 99 or would that be too confusing?

I have found this as well with sets from the 1970's that had redesigns, which
includes all of the early Technic sets. Parts were added to cover the new design,
but the unused ones were retained so you could build the model the original way.
This made sure that people could still build everything on the box.

I also read an article about this somewhere, where a LEGO designer confirmed
this is how sets with variations were treated.

As for how to handle them with our inventory system, you can see how I handled
it here:

Set No: 853 Name: Auto Chassis
*
853-1 (Inv) Auto Chassis
602 Parts, 1977
Sets: Technic: Expert Builder

I didn't have a sealed set, though, so maybe a special note is in order for
this case.

In

*
10214-1 (Inv) Tower Bridge
4287 Parts, 2010
Sets: Sculptures
the added 8 White 2x4 plates take the place of 16 Medium 1x2 plates.  These 1x2
plates are still used in the new version but in useless/filling positions.

  I also read an article about this somewhere, where a LEGO designer confirmed
this is how sets with variations were treated.

In the latest interview of the Perceived Quality Group head, he said that new
runs will always have more parts than previous runs, never fewer.  I think it
was an answer for a question about the Extra parts but I also remember understanding
it applied to any modification.

Very interesting and informative, thanks for mentioning that! But the inventory
of 853 has the parts for the redesigned version in the regular items section,
so it is not exactly the same situation we have here.

Hi, according to your photo it looks like you have 2x 3794a

Part No: 3794a Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud without Groove (Jumper)
*
3794a Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud without Groove (Jumper)
Parts: Plate, Modified {Black}
parts, however the original design needs 3 (helicopter uses two + one on the
roof for the megaphone). If its confirmed that no parts get removed in revisions,
is there maybe a 3rd one in the bag that we can't see? There's a black
blob I can't id in your photo on the left under the flowers.

I have the redesigned set (opened 3 decades ago so some small pieces missing,
I can't know the exact count). My box says "© 1986, 1990" (you can
find that under the barcode, I didn't see yours in any of your photos) and
the seal writes 4710 though I don't know if that means anything. Also I have
all 3 helmets without dimples in my case.

Part No: 193b1 Name: Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - without Visor Dimples
*
193b1 Minifigure, Headgear Helmet Space / Town with Thick Chin Strap - without Visor Dimples
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear {White}

I'm trying to understand what exactly the inventories should be and I'm
not sure they are currently 100% correct on bricklink. The instructions booklet
shows the new design in pg.4 but still has the old one in the complete set figure
on pg.15 where the old design can be seen and it uses 3x 3023 parts (as included
in your photo as well) while the new one only needs 1 of those.

So as I understand the redesign it's as follows:

Old:
3x 3023
3x 3794a (2x in heli + 1x on roof)

New:
1x 3022
1x 3176
1x 3023
2x 3794a (1x in heli + 1x on roof)

Difference:
+1x 3022
+1x 3176
-2x 3023
-1x 3794a

Legend:

Part No: 3023  Name: Plate 1 x 2
*
3023 Plate 1 x 2
Parts: Plate {Black}

Part No: 3794a Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud without Groove (Jumper)
*
3794a Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud without Groove (Jumper)
Parts: Plate, Modified {Black}

Part No: 3022  Name: Plate 2 x 2
*
3022 Plate 2 x 2
Parts: Plate {Black}

Part No: 3176 Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole
*
3176 Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole
Parts: Plate, Modified {Black}

However, neither the Regular parts list, nor the Alternate one seems to reflect
either. I've only browsed the site for the past few weeks, so I might be
wrong but as I understand it, Alternate parts should include 2x3023 + 1x3794a
(the differences, as it does with the newer parts) and the Regular list the original
quantities, neither of which is currently true. In the case of Alternate parts
I think the part quantities just got mixed as are 1+2 instead of 2+1.

I see what you mean. It will take me a moment to check my set again as it is
currently stored behind lots of other boxes, but I will try to get to it as soon
as possible.

A few more pics of part variants which do not require any inventory changes.
