| Since the pandemic began we have sent the majority of orders via a courier that
requires a phone number for delivery.
I often have to chase buyers who have already paid for a number.
It would be good if we could set the checkout process to require a phone number.
I must add that I am not sure how this works regarding data laws in different
regions?

I think it's needed, at least it should be a per store configuration if it's
mandatory on checkout or not.

Same.

Pandora's box.
What if then the buyer inputs "12345678" as a phone number (or such?)
Who's gonna check if the number is valid - even if the format is valid?
The guy may not have paid his monthly phone subscription...
In short: you need a phone number, write it in the shipping method in big/bold.
If nothing changes, you still have both the order AND the money.
Destress: send a message - this person will send you the phone number

The problem is that BrickLink address edit page doesn't have the phone number
input:
https://www.bricklink.com/pref_address.asp
But if you go to your Address Book in XP there you have the Phone input field:
https://www.bricklink.com/r3/user/addressbook.page
And seems when you register a new account (tried just the first step, didn't
proceed further) it doesn't ask for an address, so new users I think fill
their address when placing their first order, as on the checkout process the
address has the phone input too.
On the description of my shipping methods I put a link to the XP address page
suggesting to add there the phone number, it worked for some.

I would also say I absolutely need this function. Mexican Postal Service require
a phone number on all international shipments, and many of my US buyers dont
include it, even when I stated it is needed several times throughout my store.

I agree with making a phone number required for check out. I currently have
3 orders that have not been shipped - paid for and packed- because Customs forms
that are required for shipping anything outside of Canada require a phone
number. I contact the buyer as soon as I see that the package is to be sent
out of country. It often takes days to get a response.

If you are using Snap-Ship, you can put in your own phone number (or all 9's
etc) -- there is no validation that the number matches the region of the
shipment. If you are only filing the customs form online and taking in the package
to pay at the post office, the phone number validation is even weaker --
you can put in a single digit.
If you are doing the whole thing at the post office, the recipient's phone
number does not come up as a required field for most shipping methods on the
clerk's computer.
