I recently took my 8924 set, that I purchased new, down from it's hallowed
position on the shelf for a cleaning with the intention of selling it. Since
it's purchase it has been never been played with or disassembled. It has
been a display model in my Lego room, only touched to dust on occasion. As part
of my preparation for selling the set, it was disassembled and cleaned before
verifying the inventory. During the inventory verification, I saw that three
parts were listed as Flat Silver;

Part No: 59577 Name: Bionicle Hydruka Back Plate
*
59577 Bionicle Hydruka Back Plate
Parts: BIONICLE

Part No: 53566 Name: Bionicle Piraka Leg Upper Section Cover
*
53566 Bionicle Piraka Leg Upper Section Cover
Parts: BIONICLE

Part No: 49423 Name: Bionicle Toa Metru Chest Cover
*
49423 Bionicle Toa Metru Chest Cover
Parts: BIONICLE
However, my set
has these parts in Pearl Light Gray. I did some investigating and noticed that
the parts list in the instruction book, has these parts are grouped/listed among
the Pearl Light Gray parts. Not grouped separately as another color normally
would be. Continuing to look for clarification I visited the "Bricks & Pieces"
section of the LEGO website. Although these parts are not currently available
from LEGO, the Element Id & The Design Number are still viewable. I also, checked
Design Number for part #53566 and LEGO has only offered this part in one silver
color. Viewing the inventory on the LEGO website, LEGO list all the silver related
parts as "Silver" in this set, there are no distinctions. I tried to find an
unboxing video for this set on u-Tube but, I was only able to find a couple of
assembly videos, in which these parts appear Pearl Light Gray. Reviewing the
"Log of Completed Changes", there are several other pieces that were originally
listed as Flat Silver that have been changed to Pearl Light Gray. Based on my
findings,I have the following questions?
1)-Were parts of the original inventory for this set (inadvertently) listed under
the wrong color?
2)-Should I submit an inventory change request for these 3 parts?
3)-Can anyone verify via photo the existence of any of these 3 parts in Flat
Silver (A photo of a side by side comparison would be great!)?
4)-I know that there was a period of time when LEGO changed the shade of their
"Silver", can someone tell me the time frame for the change?
Thanks in advance!
Howard

  1)-Were parts of the original inventory for this set (inadvertently) listed under

Definitely possible. Pearl Light Gray and old (pre-2010) Flat Silver were, as
you found out, considered one color by LEGO (Silver). The color variance comes
from different plastic types used for different parts as well as how the color
was produced. The call is pretty subjective to each person on how to classify
them, so it is hard to consider one person "right" and another person "wrong"
in many cases. It is very possible that all parts that used LEGO Silver pre-2010
will be moved to Pearl Light Gray at some point on BrickLink.

  2)-Should I submit an inventory change request for these 3 parts?

You can, but these requests are kind of like moving deck chairs around until
a final decision is made about what to do with the Pearl Light Gray/Flat Silver
situation.

  3)-Can anyone verify via photo the existence of any of these 3 parts in Flat
Silver (A photo of a side by side comparison would be great!)?

As I said above, it can be subjective and it is hard to prove that only one shade
of LEGO Silver appeared in a given set.

  4)-I know that there was a period of time when LEGO changed the shade of their
"Silver", can someone tell me the time frame for the change?

In 2010, the silver color was changed. Before that, the LEGO color Silver varied
a lot from part to part and between materials. Post 2010, the LEGO color Silver
Metallic replaced Silver and is pretty consistent.

As you can see from the image located at that link, the way these colors were
handled on BrickLink (Pearl Light Gray, "old" Flat Silver, and "new" Flat Silver)
versus LEGO (Silver and Silver Metallic) has caused a huge mess in the inventories.
The issue will not be solved solely through inventory changes, but by a fundamental
change to the way BrickLink handles and defines these colors.

Cheers,
Randy
