*
5858-1 (Inv) The Golden Palace, Blue Box
169 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 2003
Sets: Belville: Golden Land

* Change 1 Part Trans-Dark Pink {3622 Brick 1 x 3 to 3622f1 Brick 1 x 3 Transparent with 'Frosted' Horizontal Line}

Comments from Submitter:
I didn't notice when I got it, but I still have all 4 of this piece that I have every acquired and they are all F1. I only noticed because the catalog pic I took and uploaded on 3622 is obviously a different piece.

There is a special rule about these variants. They should only be added as alternates.

Is that easy to fix manually or should I redo all 3?

Thanks. With me discovering 3 sets all at once and two of the others being variants
of these sets, and the previous pic that I replaced ALSO being F1...it makes
me doubt that this piece ever really existed except F1.

Where is this rule?

It is an unwritten rule that disallows certain minor variants from being added
to inventories. We made an exception in cases where the inclusion could be proven,
but these had to be added as alternates only, to avoid placing holes in the record
of the regular part.

All frosted variants should be treated this way.

So it really isn't a rule then, is it?

  that disallows certain minor variants from being added
to inventories.

Who determines what is a minor variant and when it can't be added to inventories?

Part No: 4079  Name: Minifigure, Utensil Seat / Chair 2 x 2
*
4079 Minifigure, Utensil Seat / Chair 2 x 2
Parts: Minifigure, Utensil
[p=4079b]

but these had to be added as alternates only, to avoid placing holes in the record
of the regular part.

Who is the "we" being referred to here? Also, if the "regular" part never appeared
in the set, then why is the integrity of the inventory being intentionally diminished?

  All frosted variants should be treated this way.

If so, then that needs to be documented somewhere for everyone to be made aware
of why frosted variants of bricks can't be in the Regular Items section of
an inventory, but a minifigure seat with a different sprue location can.

This is more of a catalog issue. The regular version of the part is a true umbrella
entry. This is different from a normal variant where there are large periods
of time you can ascribe to a newer or older verion. With these frosted parts,
there isn't enough known about them, or they don't appear regularly enough
to give them a place in the inventory system. All that placing them in a regular
inventory spot does is make a hole in the record for that element.

I will document it now and fix the inventories to comply. The other option is
to just exclude the parts from the inventory system, but I am personally curious
as to where they may surface.

This is more of a catalog issue. The regular version of the part is a true umbrella

there isn't enough known about them, or they don't appear regularly enough
to give them a place in the inventory system. All that placing them in a regular
inventory spot does is make a hole in the record for that element.

But the regular versions of the parts are used in so many different colors in
so many sets. Having a few sets here and there removed from the regular-version
entry with transparent versions of these parts that happen to be a different
variant would hardly adversely affect the time record for the regular version,
right?

In this case, 3622 appears in 2047 sets, yet only 13 of those sets contain a
3622 in a transparent color. Even if *all* of the transparent bricks of this
mold in those 13 sets had the "frosted" line, it wouldn't affect the timeline
of the regular version at all, so why wouldn't we want to document that correctly
in the inventories if a catalog entry was created to specifically call it out?
One situation that I see that could cause problems is if solid color bricks of
this mold *also* have a "frosted" line in them that can't be seen. If so,
then the "frosted" line is just a simple mold variation along the life span of
the 3622 and shouldn't even have a separate entry. Just merge it into 3622
and be done with it.

  I will document it now and fix the inventories to comply. The other option is
to just exclude the parts from the inventory system, but I am personally curious
as to where they may surface.
