Here's the problem with the "rust" parts. Were they really meant to be what
we consider the color rust? Or are they red parts that have changed color over
time?

For example, if we see the "brittle blue" parts these days, we know they look
absolutely different to the blue parts we know and love. However, these parts
probably looked just like blue parts when they were originally released in sets.

Also, the two parts that you have here are the same two parts that have been
documented as being found in a color very close to what looks like bright light
orange but were actually supposed to be yellow. I have a feeling that these color
changes may have to do with the type of plastic used for these two parts.

It would be nice for some of the resident color experts to chime in on this one.

Cheers,
Randy

2 pieces that only came in red or rust in two sets, I bought this feeling pretty
sure that they'd be the same. Not too many were made. So if we're going
to recognize the color rust, I think all of these parts are rust and not red.
They might have looked the same new, but they don't look the same now.

-=-=-

A while back I noticed I had two colors of red in 11214. I hadn't documented
it and when I got some more I didn't document it again because I just thought
it was a variation. But the darker ones are a perfect match for these rust parts.
So that's a piece that came in both colors. To repeat, I have taken rust
11214 from more than one set, but I have no way of saying which sets.

Isn't there a mess with "rust" on Bricklink
WoutR list
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1146513

"27 Rust
= 13 Red Orange (Duplo cows, Fabuland heads)
= The other BrickLink Rust parts are probably an odd version of 21 Bright Red
(?) but that color is so different that the separate listing is justified."
https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/14960664342/

and

"68 Dark Orange
= 38 Dark Orange
= 216 Rust (for Skateboard 48394, Ladle x234, Dog 51163cx1)"

I had

Set No: 8437 Name: Future Car
*
8437-1 (Inv) Future Car
418 Parts, 1997
Sets: Technic: Model: Off-Road
as a child about 20 years ago and the red parts we are talking about were noticeable
darker than normal red parts. So I would say they have always been "rust".

Also, the two parts that you have here are the same two parts that have been

I agree. Since the "bright light orange" parts are inventoried as yellow, how
about classifying the "rust" parts as red and adjust the note on both entries?

What about

Part No: 4873 Name: Bar 1 x 6 with Open Studs
*
4873 Bar 1 x 6 with Open Studs
Parts: Bar

This part does come in Flat Black and Rust. They may very well have intended
the colors to be regular Glossy Black and Red but the plastic used renders them
a Flat, dull matte color ...hence Flat Black and Rust

Getting rid of the color rust?

No. I was thinking about adding a note on the parts similar to the one for the
"bright light orange" ones and then having the inventories changed to have red
instead of rust. However, for now I think it is better to leave these parts alone.
I will update the inventory to have the parts in rust like you requested.

Cheers,
Randy

At least they will be together.
