I just noticed you are from Michigan. I was born and lived in Detroit until
I joined the Army (actually drafted - enlisted to be something other than infantry.)
What part are you from?

True. It’s something we learn. It's taught to us in one form or another.
Some just have better teachers...

Obama credited Wright with introducing him to his Christian faith. Wright
officiated Obama’s wedding to Michelle and baptized both of their children. The
couple attended Trinity United Church of Christ where Wright preached.

I probably shouldn't even bite on this, but you do know that the BrickLink
forum is not for making political potshots, right? Besides, many of us are well-aware
of your leanings, Cory. We don't need further affirmation.

Easy--it wasn't political. It was an extensive list of historical happenings.
Cory latched onto to a single item and put a political spin on it in order to
try to tear down the quoted individual. My question is, "why?".

Furthermore, if you think that someone (regardless of affiliation or profession)
espousing the view that we are not born hating is making some sort of partisan
political statement, then you may already be beyond help. I would think most
of us would like to live in a world where that's true even if the idea came
from the captain of the other team.

I read Cory as not tearing down the individual but lauding him. Any quote by
a politician is politics, no matter how you slice it. I don't have any issue
with either comment at all. But if you are going to take someone to task on not
posting politics in the forum why not the original post.

Come on now. I just list, and have for years, what is. I make no political
comment on events that have happened. A historian does not judge, just reports
(ideally.)

I list things of interest to me and that I think might be interesting to others.
We tend to like Hollywood stuff, some history, when things were discovered or
invented. Religious happenings and political happenings just are. I have commented
on things President Trump has done and things President Obama has done. I comment
a lot on Lincoln because I like him and respect him. I have spent many years
in school and there are so many things that do interest me. I like to share
these. I am not crazy about French history, but I do post because of the French
member that reads these and adds to my post.
I so hope that there is no argument over what I do post. I have done it for
years when I am not too busy. I am old and have no life; it gives me something
to do and I learn from what I post also. I have tried to stay very neutral though
I have highly partisan leanings.

Please do not make these posts into a forum fight. Do not read into them when
someone does something in history you do not like.

I just read your "Me" page after you commented that you are, shall we just say,
advanced in years. The very first line about being born in a cabin intrigued
me but as I was reading on I could see that your tongue was obviously stuck in
your cheek as you were writing and after about reading about 3/4 of your me page
the first line finally registered in my mind "I was born in a log cabin that
I helped my father build". I can't believe I didn't catch that one right
away - after all I might me dumb but I am not stupid. Well I might be stupid
but I am not an idiot! Well, okay I might be an idiot but I am not dumb.

It is not easy building a log cabin especially when one has to cut down the trees.
Do not feel bad. I was put in for volunteer of the year at the El Paso police
department. My supervisor asked me for a short bio. I gave her one that listed
my accomplishments such as mayor of Detroit, space shuttle pilot, Noble prize
winner and winning two LA marathons. I walked past her office a little later
and she was listing all my “accomplishments” on her submission. I should have
let it go through, but I stopped her.

This I have to disagree with as it is such a general statement. Example, a baroness
or something like that complained that Churchill was drunk at a social gathering,
he retorted with "I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and
you will still be ugly. not political.

or another "I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs
treat us as equals."

"We are masters of the unsaid words, but slaves of those we let slip out."

Lincoln:

All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.

If this is coffee, please bring me some tea; but if this is tea, please bring
me some coffee.

The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who'll
get me a book I ain't read.

Not every quote is political. Some are to educate and comment on society. This
can be argued, but why here?

I should have been clearer, that was not a personal "you", but a general one.
My apologies.

Given Cory's history of opinions and his posts that have been canceled for
straying into politics, it was quite clear what he was doing. I can assure you
he was not lauding the individual. If he had been, his rebuttal to me would
have and should have said as much, but it didn't.

True. It’s something we learn. It's taught to us in one form or another.
Some just have better teachers...

Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Chris,

Did you have anything to add to the topic “No one is born hating” or did you
want to keep it about me? Because it is well worth talking about, and it would
be a shame to make it about me, or my “well-known leanings "

I was occupied with thoughts of the topic when I posted, and would have posted
no differently if it were any other that was being glorified for their hypocrisy,
regardless of anyone’s leanings.

It is a good topic, that to me has no problem in standing on it’s own. I try
not to label or box thoughts and ideas, but if I were made to pick a box to place
it into, it’d be cultural not political.

That being said, I'm fully aware that any thoughts expressed that threaten
the illusions or narratives we create in our minds, to feel warm and fuzzy about
ourselves, is uncomfortable. No one likes it.

Yeah, it's a rough life isn't it? You think you can walk around feeling
warm and fuzzy about yourself as you degrade those you don't like and then
someone has the audacity to push back. I imagine it can indeed start to create
cracks in one's own self-important illusory narratives.

I'm really sorry you're feeling uncomfortable with this, Cory. I wish

That I like The turnip, I mean.

I keep telling myself "Not my Circus not my monkeys" but to the two or three
people on here who are just churning tit for tat back and forth, I for one am
getting a little weary. Don't make me pretend like I'll turn this car
around!

I could not resist, so here it is.
Tit for tat
John P

Q Where did tit for tat come from?

A It’s the littlest words that often give us the most trouble in sorting out
their origins. They’re likely to be the ones that have proved to be the most
mutable in the spoken language. This curious phrase is a classic example.

In the sixteenth century, it was tip for tat. Another form, used by Shakespeare
and almost certainly from fencing, was tap for tap, which makes plain the underlying
idea of a reprisal or retaliation that’s roughly proportionate to its cause.

Tat in tit for tat isn’t a distinct word at all but an instance of a type of
reduplication in which the internal vowel changes from i to a, as in chit-chat,
flimflam and knick-knack. Tip here is the same as tap, a light blow. Tit is not
in the mammary sense but comes from an old verb that likewise could mean to strike
a light blow.

All these words have an idea of smallness about them: a tit can also be a small
bird (originally titmouse but it was the tit part that communicated small size,
since mouse isn’t the rodent but a version of mose, an Old English name for the
same bird); at one time tit could be a small or part-grown horse or a girl or
young woman. Tip can also be an extremity or small point. The ultimate origins
of most of these are uncertain but some may be imitative.

After all that, you will understand that we must dismiss the common belief that
tit for tat is a corruption of this for that.

I am suspicious of two other statements about its origin which appear in some
reference works. It has been suggested that it’s related to the French tant pour
tant, which chefs will know as a mixture of equal parts of fine sugar and ground
almonds. It seems to have once meant “like for like” and is ancient enough that
a bashed-about version is in Love’s Labour’s Lost: “So pertaunt-like would I
o’ersway his state”. But if it was ever common it is improbable as the source
of tit for tat, as the links to the other short English words I’ve listed are
too strong.

Most works that mention that source also suggest that it could be from a Dutch
phrase, dit vor dat, in the same sense, though my Dutch contacts say it doesn’t
exist in the language today nor in old texts. I suspect uncritical borrowing
of erroneous material from earlier sources, the curse of third-rate reference
books.

I didn't see any censership. Not really needed. It is a small bird. If
the moderators thought differently they have very dirty minds. Not me.

Ya, Troy band me for two weeks for being snide. Guess he could not think of
anything to charge me with other than that.
Reminds me of an Andrew Johnson qoute "It takes a pretty poor mind to know only
one way to spell a word."

John P

How are you doing? Your collection must be rather extensive by now. I know
you got a lot of my stuff which made me happy that all those things found a good

getting a little weary. Don't make me pretend like I'll turn this car
around!

I love controversy, but not on this one.
I wish people would wait until I say something stupid and then fight. That will
probably happen sooner than later.
(tit for tat) I know what a tit is, but what is a tat?

John P

Whew! Worried me there for a sec. i thought I might have went and got myself
banned.

What the hell guys! For this to work, you all need to do your parts; be outraged.

E-mail Foster (Thor) and ask him to comment. He always got so many people going
crazy. But, to go crazy and have animus over a birthday listings is a bit odd.
But Foster could do it. He could start controversy over a post one word long.
He had a talent.

E-mail Foster (Thor) and ask him to comment.

Oh c’mon John. I don’t really care if people comment or not. You guys do plenty
of that anyways, without my having to email anybody. Just trying to get some
of you ‘virtuous’ types to let loose

He always got so many people going crazy.

He sure did. He got me going on occasion too, I just didn’t take his argumentative
style as personally as many others did, John As I said to him in an email
(unrelated to BL): I don’t agree with what you have to say all the time, but
I do enjoy the way you say it.

But, to go crazy and have animus over a birthday listings is a bit odd.

“go crazy and have animus over a birthday listing” Let’s be honest, John. If
you referring to my rare comment to your daily listings, it was not a birthday
listing but a “this day in history” listing. If it’s deemed going “crazy” and
having “animus” what my original post is considered, well then so be it. I may
be crazy, but I have no animus here…

"True. It’s something we learn. It's taught to us in one form or another.
Some just have better teachers...

Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Obama credited Wright with introducing him to his Christian faith. Wright
officiated Obama’s wedding to Michelle and baptized both of their children. The
couple attended Trinity United Church of Christ where Wright preached"

But Foster could do it. He could start controversy over a post one word long. He had a talent.

Foster wasn’t here trying to be liked or popular, most here know firsthand that's
easy and safe to do. He spoke his mind in spite of what others would think of
him, and for that I have enormous respect for him. It’s rare you get to know
someone of that character.

My brother was very much the same. Maybe it’s in that, I have a soft spot and
understanding for the trait.

A lot of us know more about Foster than what is posted, so you are not all that
special about that. I liked Foster because he tried to help people. I often
did not like him when anyone disagreed and he went wild. He was banned for life
at one time from this forum. I would also say, and posted many times, let Foster
back in.
You like to stir things up and I will say to you what I once said to Foster:

I don't think you get enough love for what you do around here, John. I really
do dig your absurdist humor, and your posts often elicit a chuckle from me.
You always have interesting facts and insights or just the right pic or comment
to help ease tensions.

I think a lot of us here (myself included) take ourselves a bit too seriously
sometimes. I sincerely do respect your ability to roll with the punches and
not let stupid stuff get to you--it's very zen-like. I suppose that
comes with experience (no age-related insult intended ) Hopefully I'll
reach that point sometime soon!

Sorry we crapped on your post

That is ok. I can clean it off. I clean 4 cat litter boxes everyday so no problem.
Thank you for the kind words.

This should give you a smile then: we looked after this curious little critter
for a week while our friends were out of town. This was just moments before
disaster:

Using your cats to signal how caring/compassionate you guys are. Not cool. Wait!
Maybe puppies would work? Yeah...I don't know. I thought maybe as a dog guy,
it might work. But no, not cool

Although both of your cats are pretty damed cute, I'm pretty sure they didn't
sign-up for this

That being said, I wish there were more pet pics in the forum.

What a sweetheart! Never discourage it from thinking it's dog, though

Beautiful, I'm going to show the pic to my son when he gets home.

Yeah, cats and dogs both here. Fortunately, I believe the internet is like 40%
cat pictures. We had to put down our two cats and one dog over the course of
two months last summer all due to age-related illnesses. It was rough and I
don't think we're really ready for that again, so we are happy to baby
sit for all of our pet friends!

Here's a bonus pic for you (she was "helping" me with BrickLink orders):

Probably thinking why is he spending money on those damn things when he could
be buying me treats. My cat does the same thing, stars at the tv or the computer.
I usually have one cat laying by the computer so I put my tool bar on the top.

other than porn.

Wish we could post video, watching her track the cursor on the screen was pretty
entertaining. She is a Russian Blue, which I'm told is an expensive breed
(my wife's friend is a doctor). She has a great temperment, but it does
seem a shame to spend a lot of money like that when there are so many animals
in shelters.

other than porn.

John P (what kind of cat is that?)

I love Russian Blues. Beautiful cat. I found one out in the neighborhood running
wild. Advertised on placards and in the paper. No one came forth so I took
her to the Humane Society and she was adopted the next day. My wife would not
let me keep her, we had 3 cats at that time.

That is ok. I can clean it off. I clean 4 cat litter boxes everyday so no problem.
Thank you for the kind words.
There are some that come with age and there are others that cannot come with
age.

This should give you a smile then: we looked after this curious little critter
for a week while our friends were out of town. This was just moments before
disaster:

Nice picture. I just melt over cat posts. They make the day all worth while.
Here is a picture of my newest addition. We now have 6 indoor cats.

I don't think you get enough love for what you do around here, John.

[sigh] Yes, he does. He gets plenty of love here, and he knows it. Why else would
he spent so much time here, tolerating the likes of me

I really do dig your absurdist humor, and your posts often elicit a chuckle from me.
You always have interesting facts and insights or just the right pic or comment
to help ease tensions.

We all do...

Lol why would a baby be a good role model? I always assumed that the very first
emotion felt by newborns is unadulterated hate......for the intense pressure,
searing bright and clanging echoes of the fearful unknown. Why else would they
be wailing their little eyes out? They go from a place of absolute peace and
weightlessness, not the smallest labor of life, to simultaneously feeling blinded,
drowned, and the most profound pounding migraine from their dislocated foreheads.

I like to think people get better as they age, as they meet new people, because
we all start with helpless rage and "in-group bias", the instinctive preference
for faces similar to our parents. That's right, babies are super racist!

If they're original thoughts, impressive!

Very compelling, Caleb

David Mitchell is my shining light, but yeah, they're mine. I'm a
bitter guy. To my co-workers chagrin, I once offered and turned down a high-five
from my senior co-workers baby. It's a cold world man. We're friends,
but when he moved away and named his third boy Caleb, I legitimately suspect
it was an attempt to redeem the name rather than a friendly gesture.

Atlas Cloud, David Mitchell? I see it...

Cynical? Don't see it.

Or was it the co-worker's baby that punk'd you. I've heard they're
pissed-off and bitter

Thank you....... wish that was true! Maybe sometime this winter?

I can sell, but only in the really misleading, prerequisite sense.

Haha no worries. I think a had my store for years before I sold anything. Starting
out and learning where all the bells and whistles in the settings is fun (at
least I liked learning it), I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well.

I know you are being snide, but for the record, racism is a learned response,
not innate. A baby is an inchoate creature, knowing nothing but hunger. We
teach them to hate. My parents were racist and I was until I was about 14 and
found out everyone is a person and equal. My children get up in a household
that expressed equality. They are not racist. Just anecdotal. I think that
the comments on this thread should be prorogued for a very long time.
