Hello All

I picked up a load of DUPLO and while sorting came across these 2x2 and 2x4 bricks
in a blue colour.

The picture shows 4 of the bricks I am trying to id the colour along with a Blue,
Medium Blue and Medium Azure bricks to compare.
It`s not dark blue as that was the 1st colour I checked.

Thanks in advance for any help.
David

From here they look like 'brittle blue' but I didn't know this happens
in the world of Duplo, just regular lego bricks. I'm sure some of the others
such as Stuart will come along and may be able to ID it.

Yep Brittle blue, never come across this colour and I found out why "brittle"
blue.

Left to right : 4 brittle blue, 1 blue, 1 medium blue, 1 medium azure. Just my
guess from where i'm sitting. The 3437 does appear to come in those colors.

I have never come across brittle blue before, but after testing 1 block it appears
you are correct.

I destroyed 1 of the bricks with no issues. So I have 21 2x2, 1 2x4, 2 1x2, 1
2x3curved top.

Is there a market and how would I place in my store?

Thanks for you help.

I've read about brittle blue being a period in time where the plastic turned
'weird' i suppose for whatever reason? However in my experience as a
seller, I fully believe it is a result of exposure to sunlight and such. Nothing
more. Blue, white, yellow and grey's turn all sorts of weird shades over
time. It's inevitable... I don't understand why we always talk about
brittle blue but not brittle yellow? If the part is not the right shade i'd
just throw it in the trash.

I've had brittle blue from sealed sets where the parts have never ever seen
the light of day. There are buyers who think this makes parts used. Rather than
getting into arguments about TLG quality, I just store them separate and will
probably list them as oddities at some time.

The term brittle blue is not just a discoloration. It is a bad quality plastic
that breaks easily. Other color bricks may discolor, but they don't just
break apart like the brittle blue pieces.

Having only heard about this colour before, I was amazed at how easily i was
able to break 1 of the 2x2 bricks.

I was thinking that I would list within the custom section with a note to suggest
these are collectors pieces and not for play.

After seeing the mess that happens along with sharp edges I would not want any
child to get hold of these.

Honestly I am a little conflicted as to whether to list here of just put them
on ebay.

Is there a "brittle brown"? I was building a set from the early 2000's and
I had multiple pieces explode in my hand while building. I'd never seen anything
like it. Set looked in good condition otherwise.

Had this happen on odd bricks but not on brown, nothing consistent like the brittle
blue though.

Not sure why this happens so i suspect that other colours may occur if it's
a plastic problem.

Good to know, It was just the brown on that one set (from a bulk lot) no other
parts affected.

Thanks

Some others may find the same thing and we can then confirm it as another brittle
colour, not an easy thing to do but this is how the brittle blue came about.

It does look like Brittle blue and from the description of how easily it broke,
i believe it is.

As has been said, it is known as brittle blue as even the most gentle squeeze
can make it literally explode in your hands leaving very sharp edges that can
cut.

Sun faded or discoloured blue looks a deep greenish blue but still behaves
normally, not easily broken just like other faded colours.

There is a small market amongst collectors as a curiosity, especially any 2 x
4's, i have the 3001 and some others but not the duplo bricks.

Definitely list them for sale as there's a market for brittle blue. You
could either do then as the normal cat listing and put notes in the comments
field or you could do them as a custom item, make sure you put the words brittle
blue in the description as this could be picked up on a search (I've searched
this colour before). Would be interested myself if you have one in a 2x4 brick.
