Hi Randy,

For more than two years, I have checked almost all copies of this set in the
market. The blue hinges are only used for the alternate built so they were not
always present in used copies. But I have not seen, even one single time, the
blue hinges with solid studs. I am confident that they did not appear in this
set, or if they did, for few copies in early 1985 (this is now absurd!)
The black hinges are never visible in the photos I have seen so I cannot say
anything about them.
By the way, I have already given proof for hinges with hollow studs (and I
have a new copy, and had another new copy for some time)

I have thought a lot about these types of cases. I think there is no perfect
solution. It is hard to find a new copy, specially if the box is small and doesn't
have a plastic window, we would not see anything unless if the box is opened.
Moreover, if a variant of a part appeared only in less than 10% of the total
releases, then it makes it very hard to find a reliable evidence. As we don't
remove a part (that came only with one single variant) if we don't have any
evidence for it, we should not remove a part that we have an evidence for its
alternate. If we do, then the inventory would be wrong.

This is my suggestion concerning the parts in a set that was released about the
same transition time than, like for the hinges 4275/4275a, 4276/4276a as the
transition time was exactly 1985, the same year this train 7722 was released:

Assuming the parts in question are rare (not like normal 2*2 bricks,...) we can
check many copies of used sets. If we don't see them in any copy, we can
remove them. If we see them in some used copy, then we should be more cautious
and keep them in the inventory.
For example, I know the light gray thin clips appeared only in 7745-1 in the
first two or three months in 1985. Before finding a reliable proof, I had
already seen few times among, let's say, 100 copies in the market. Here these
thin clips appears in less than 4% of the total copies sold between 1985-90 but
I still found some evidence.
However, I had never seen hinges with hollow stud in any copy of 7727 or 7815
so far, (I think except once with 7727 ). Note that both of these sets were released
between 1983-84. Or I never saw, except that single time, the black thick clips
with 7727-1.

You could examine what I mean by checking the blue thin clips in the set 6881-1
from 1984. You would see some used copies coming with the thin variant while
some other copies come with the thick one.

To make it more reliable, I only check those copies coming with the box but ignore
copies sold by dealers (the way they take photos make it in general clear they
are dealers, or the total number of their feedbacks received)

Hi Reza -

The original inventory for this set contained the versions of the blue and black
hinges with hollow studs. Then in April 2013, Stefaan (member elias3) had the
hinges changed to the versions with solid studs. I had correspondence with Stefaan,
and he could not remember exactly why he submitted those change requests. What
he did tell me was that he bases his research on sets around the same time period
instead of focusing on looking at many copies of the same set like you do. So
his changes may have been based solely on assumptions at that time. Next, in
April 2014, the versions with hollow studs make a reappearance in the inventory
as alternates. As you and I both know by now, the hollow stud versions were definitely
found in this set, and we have little to nothing to show for the inclusion of
the solid stud versions in this set. Therefore, I am in agreement with your request
to remove the solid stud versions from the inventory once again to return it
to its original state. This applies for both the blue and black hinges. We can
always return to this topic at a later time if necessary, and we will at least
have a communication trail to fall back on.

Cheers,
Randy

Hi Randy,

Thanks for checking this.
I have had 2 sealed copies and got photos of a NIB copy from one of my buyers.
But they are not early release from 1985.
My point was that after 2 years checking almost all used/sealed copies of this
set over the world, if the blue hinges with solid stud were used in early release
of this set, I would have seen it by now. However, there is always a chance that
the blue hinges with solid studs were only used for few copies in early 1985,
but it's almost impossible to find this out

Cheers,
Reza
