| The four black ones and one brown one are about a plates width shorter. I can't
be the first one to notice this!

Do you know which sets they come from?
It would be interesting to check if something changed in their uses, mathematically
speaking.

| I don't know.
Do you have black ones and brown ones? Can you check to see if this holds true
for at least all the black ones?

Nope. I have none. Dark Ages.
If the sets that use them are using them differently, — that is, if they aren’t
substitutable —, the variant would really be necessary. It wouldn’t be the first
time TLG thought better about making a part “in System,” like
or
I wanted to look at the building instructions to look for a mathematical necessity
for the change, but there are some 14 sets that use them, so knowing from which
sets they came from would have narrowed the search.
On the other hand, another possibility simply is that some are not LEGO

| Same thing with the large brown riggings

This one has a note from some time (I think it is a quite old note) and it is
on this list here
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2488
So for now the only thing which can be done here is do the same for this one
and also I will add it to the list.
As for now splitting old parts mold variants is on hold and as you can see this
list of mold variants not distinguished in the catalog is quite a long.
