| We have completed the first catalog project and it was moved down and out:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2473
Work has now begun on the second project, which is retitling all of the minifigures
to include the number 7 in the title (this number indicates the optimal number
for a group photograph and is necessary for the convenience of people who photograph
groups of LEGO minifigures).
That is only a little joke. We're actually doing something more controversial:
categorizing the 700+ items which have not yet been categorized. These items
are currently categorized as (Other), meaning they are not categorized.
I have given this some thought (about ten minutes worth) and decided that there
is no need to worry about how many categories we create. The time for worrying
about that has long passed. If we're honest with ourselves, the categories
and sub-categories page for sets is huge and the parts category list is also
huge. At some point BrickLink may code main menus for classes of items, but
until then I'm not going to concern myself with trying to limit categories
to a manageable number. The time to worry passed when you could no longer view
them on a single page.
I'm going to try to move as many items as possible into existing categories,
but if new categories must be created, then so be it.
Here's the plan: I'm going to post back here later today with all my
proposed changes (I may have to take this in steps) and give people a chance
to comment. These changes will not make everyone happy and not every suggestion
can be honored, but I will take into consideration everyone's thoughts about
the changes I'm suggesting.
Once we reach a reasonable consensus, then I'll start moving stuff with a
goal of clearing out (Other) items within one month. I plan to open a separate
forum thread which people should not comment on to document changes which
are actually made for easy reference by buyers and sellers.
If anyone objects to moving these things, please remember that they are not categorized
at all right now. Other is not a category and this change, although it will
take adjusting to, is a needed and requested improvement.

I think 'Animal - Air' might be better for this, but that's just

My first thought on this was that it should go to Axle, but Hose is probably
a better fit.
| Waves - create new category titled Wave

This one has me conflicted. There's a number of these Wave items that should
be in 'Minfig - Utensil' but others should not. Is it better to keep
them all together in a new category, or split them based on common usage?

I considered both of those categories, but I also thought about people who find
this part and have no idea what it is. Where would they look if they didn't
know it was supposed to be a beehive? I think they'd look for a cone, which
is why I ended up there.

I agree with this. I think we should look at parts, and modify them as LEGO uses
them. If LEGO used this exclusively as a beehive, it should be that, but seeing
that now it has more uses (as food), I think some sort of modified cone would
be a more generic name for this
Same goes for the hilt. The standard hilt is only used as a minifig hilt, right?
However that hilt-looking bar is used for other things so it makes sense for
it to be a bar.

Wrong. It’s used for many things, just look at the pictures of the sets it has
been used this year alone: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=64567&in=S&itemYear=2018&ov=Y

To me, it looks most like something that Disney uses in their cartoons. I have
never seen a natural bee colony looking like these.
I assumed that they were based on some idea of the older straw hives mixed with
a wasp nest. If there is any species building these, I'd like to see an image

Parts should be cataloged according to what they look like. Experienced BL users
will locate a part regardless of where you put it, but catalog categories ate
most useful for novice users. So, if we have a bunch of waves, put them in a
“wave” category (or something that logically includes waves). Don’t put them
in categories according to usage. For instance, this guy’s usage was to build
a palm tree - good luck to new users locating it in the catalog when they have
found one in a pile of parts.

I don't know if the DB in it's current state can handle it, but this
and select other items like the Pin Hinges being recently discussed...I'd
like to see these types of things listed in two (or more, if applicable) categories.
It is a hinge. It is a pin. The beehive could be considered a cone and could
be considered for air animal. Or, in my mind a new "Insect" or "Bug" category.
Anyway, the main point is that I believe things should be found...or be able
to be found...in all the reasonably appropriate places one might look for them.
| Han Solo in Carbonite - move to Minifigure
|
Container (similar to Sarcophagi)
| Light Cover - move to Cone
|
Bricks, round
| Slides - create new category titled Slide
|
new category Chutes and Ladders...or something similarly comprehensive to accommodate
stairs, bridges, conveyors, and similar.
| Power Bursts - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
or Minifig, Weapon
| Rope Bridge - move to Stairs
|
See Slides above
| Rotor, Spinjitzu - move to Propeller
|
probably another candidate for multi-category
new Ornamental Brick category for this, the Lion-head, cornices, and similar
| Spike - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
another multi-category item. I'd see it as a tooth or claw...
| Spring Shooter - move to Brick, Modified
|
I'd put it wherever the cannons are...along with springs as second category...
| Star Wars Multipack - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
another multi-category candidate...

It is very similar to this part:
However I understand that it is not a lid for a coffin. Perhaps the coffin lid
should also go to Minifigure.

I propose Bar instead of Cone. More similar parts and no real cone shape.
| Spike - move to Minifigure, Utensil

Please consider Minifigure, Weapon.

I find it interesting that most waves are flames...
Also the first wave (zigzag) should be a Minifig, Weapon.

I would suggest moving this to the new category 'Chain'. The more we
move to 'Minifig, Utensil' the more it becomes another other category.
It has a single chain link anyway.

I kinda' like [DeLuca]'s idea of a new category called 'Shooter'
or 'Launcher' and put the Power Bursts and Spring Shooter in there.
Then as part of the 'Part Reclassification Project' move the cannons;
disc and disc launchers [53990*]; dart [x1774cx1]; the "Mini Blaster / Shooter"
parts; "Rapid Shooter" parts (+ 15392); out of 'Minifig, Weapon' into
this new category. Then the "Spring Shooter Dart" parts from 'Bar'.

| Robert -
I have not read through any of the other responses in this thread yet, so here
is my initial thoughts on your suggestions below.
In Catalog, StormChaser writes:
| If you do have a comment/suggestion on where these parts are going, please suggest
an alternative location. Before you comment, look at the situation carefully
and present a good argument about why the proposed category is inappropriate.
Parts:
There are 98 Other parts. Going in order by the standard way of displaying these
(Item Name, Up):
Two babies - move to minifigures
|
I am fine with this.
| Ball - create new category titled Ball
|
Sounds good. This category could be used for balls from other categories.
Not sure about this one. I added this to the catalog, and there really was no
good place for it. So far, it was used as a beehive and cotton candy, I think.
Once again, I have no idea where a beehive fits well, and cotton candy could
lead it to be placed in the Food & Drink category. I think it will be used for
more than those two things, though, so limiting it to one place by a certain
use for the piece would not be ideal. I guess that is why calling it a "beehive"
is not ideal. Maybe Cone is the right place for it when we go with the piece's
basic shape and function.
| Han Solo in Carbonite - move to Minifigure
|
Sounds OK. I could see it being put into the Minifig, Utensil, Decorated category,
also.
| BrickHeadz glasses - move to Bar
|
Nope. There is nothing bar-like about it. It could be placed into a new "Ring"
category, since I know there are others that could go into that category. I could
also see it being placed into the Tile, Modified category as a "Tile, Modified
1 x 1 with 2 Rings" since it is basically just that. However, the other set of
BrickHeadz glasses are already in the Bar category, so an inconsistency would
arise between the two parts. Maybe both should be considered modified tiles.
| Chains - create new category titled Chain
|
Yes. This makes perfect sense.
| Chest armor - move to Large Figure Part
|
The only problem I have with this is that this part was not used to make any
large figures. It was only used to make mechs. I will need to give this one some
more thought.
| Finials - move to new Ball category
|
Hmmmm. I don't know. The one finial has *only* been used to represent a minifig
part, so right now that one could go into the Minifig, Body Part category with
the only caveat being that a plain version may need to be recategorized. The
other finial could go into the Plate, Round category since it is basically just
a 1x1 round plate with a ball on top.
| Hand, Mechanical - move to Large Figure Part
|
I had a hard time trying to figure out where this part went when I added it to
the catalog. Right now, my thoughts on it are similar to the chest armor from
above. It was only used to make one mech so far.
| Human Tools - create new category titled Accessory, Human Tool
|
Sounds good. I am not sure about the exact name for the category, but a new category
is definitely needed for these.
| Infinity Stones - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
They are not a utensil used by minifigs. They are more like an embellishment
that can be used in anything that uses the little pin. I think the Rock category
may be a possible location for these.
| Light Cover - move to Cone
|
Nope. It's only connection point is a bar, so Bar would be better.
| Obscure Item - leave in other
|
Hard to argue with this one.
| Slides - create new category titled Slide
|
Yes. This makes perfect sense.
| Power Bursts - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
This one just does not feel right, either. They aren't weapons, and they
aren't utensils. Some are bar-like. Some are shield-like. Some look like
they belong in a Wave/Fire category. This one is tough.
| Rings - create new category titled Ring
|
Yes. This makes perfect sense.
| Rip Cords - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
I can see how this makes sense, but I am not sure. I would be fine with this
change, though.
| Rope Bridge - move to Stairs
|
This has nothing to do with stairs, so that category does not seem appropriate
at all. I can't think of anywhere it would fit except a new Bridge category.
| Rotor, Spinjitzu - move to Propeller
|
Yep. I was going to put in a request to move that part some time ago, but then
I forgot.
| Shaft Clip - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
Nope. This is not a tool used by us. It is an actual part used in the build process
for the set. Unfortunately, Other seems like a great place for this part.
I would be fine with this. I always thought of it as a rock in the shape of a
skull anyways.
| Spike - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
I would move this into the same category as all of the other barbs/claws/horns
for consistency.
| Spiral Pole - move to Hose
|
Not sure about this one. I have never seen the part in real life. Is the part
flexible or rigid?
| Spring - create new category titled Spring (some of these in Technic which could
be moved)
|
Yes. This makes perfect sense.
| Spring Shooter - move to Brick, Modified
|
Yes. This makes perfect sense.
| Star Wars Multipack - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
The problem I have with this one is that none of the pieces contained in this
multipack are in the Minifigure, Utensil category, so putting the multipack there
makes no sense. Looking at this multipack and the Power Bursts multipack makes
me wonder if we should have a Multipack category that contains all of the multipacks
that were added. I don't even like that idea very much though.
| Tassel - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
I would rather see this one in the Plate, Round category similar to
| Waves - create new category titled Wave
|
Yes. This was my suggestion many moons ago. However, I would make sure that Fire
was also in the name somewhere.
| Wing / Sail Holder - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
Same thoughts on this as the Shaft Clip from above.
I am perfectly OK with that.
| Zipline - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
LOL. This isn't a zipline *we* are using! I am not sure exactly where
it would fit. I will wait to see others' thoughts about it.
That's it for now until I read the rest of the thread...
Cheers,
Randy

an alternative location. Before you comment, look at the situation carefully

Parts:
There are 98 Other parts. Going in order by the standard way of displaying these
(Item Name, Up):
|
No, I don't see this at all.. Animal,Accessory!
| Human Tools - create new category titled Accessory, Human Tool
|
Yes, findability for buyers is the number 1 concern but I just want to add that
as a seller I too would really like it if the minfig, utensil category is split
somehow. For me it's THE bottleneck of the shop, even with my own sub categorisation.
| Infinity Stones - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
I'd say rock if diamonds are also rock.. The rock category does bug me a
bit though, the only way a diamond and a BURP are both rock is just linguistics:
The English language happens to use the same word for them, but to all non-English
natives they are different concepts entirely and it's unexpected to find
them in the same category.
I can see a Minfig,Treasure category that includes infinity stones, gems, diamonds,
coins, ingots...
| Power Bursts - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
No, they are not utensils, not items to use for something. They are effects,
just like fire and lightning.
| Spring Shooter - move to Brick, Modified
|
Ok I think something needs to be done about this whole shooting deal because
it's currently shooting in all directions!
-So, these are supposedly Brick,Mod...
-Then there are rubber arrow shooters that are classified as "Technic".
-Classic cannons are classified as Minifig,Weapon even though they are not weapons
that minfigs can hold, while all other Minifig,Weapons are.
-And there is a net shooter that is now in the Vehicle category even though it
also appears as fixed weapons.
To me, none of these make sense. They're not bricks, they're not technic,
they're not minifig weapons, and they are not vehicle parts. Can we have
a category called "shooter"? All Bars that are really projectiles can be moved
there too, as they will rarely be used the way other Bars are used, and the Bar
category is getting a big clogged.
| Tassel - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
No, not a utensil to me. I feel like all current utensils are really items that
minifigs use, and this one would really stand out as not meeting that criterium.
| Waves - create new category titled Wave
|
I assume that it should include flames, water, lightning (and I would say power
bursts...)? It is very likely that this group of items is going to expand, I
totally see new lightning and fire flashes being released the coming years. They
risk either crowding the (Other) category if they do not look "wavy" enough,
or making the "wave" category something really unclear. I see lightning bolts
are already described as "wave", I would not expect that. But I really do see
it makes sense to group these kinds of things together. But I'd prefer a
different name... something like "effects" or something in that direction...

Thanks, Jen!! This title was perfect. I was racking my brain trying to think
of an all-inclusive title, but I came back and reread your post and saw that
you'd already solved it.
The parts in this category are all physical manifestations of energy in one way
or another and many already have search keywords like flame and wave in their
titles. Therefore, a simple, elegant title like Energy Effects should be easy
to remember and renders unnecessary a clumsy title like Wave / Flame / Electricity
/ Plasma etc.
There are now 30 parts in this category. Thanks again!

| I made a spreadsheet of all the comments I got for parts movement and only a
few parts in the (Other) category were contentious. The rest seemed to be agreed
upon. So, now that I have carefully reviewed all of your comments, here is my
new plan with one last chance to comment on where these are going.
BTW, clearing out the parts in the (Other) category will NOT have any effects
like the merging of categories did. In fact, a day or two ago I already tested
this by creating the category Ball and moving the ball on the list there. The
category merging created the error, not adding new categories.
As always, this list will help anyone to see where these parts have gone for
the next three years (except for anything moved to Minifigures - I'll update
that list as necessary):
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1113041
| Two babies - move to minifigures
|
Still the plan.
| Ball - create new category titled Ball
|
Already done.
Got a lot of feedback on this, but decided in the end Cone was the most appropriate
category for this hard-to-define part. Already moved and retitled.
| Han Solo in Carbonite - move to Minifigure
|
In spite of mixed responses, still the plan. This is shown on the box front
as a figure with the other set figures.
| BrickHeadz glasses - move to Bar
|
Only one person had a problem with this, stating that this was not bar-like.
However, bars can be round, can't they? The suggestion was to move it to
ring, which I think I will heed and title it Ring, Double or something like
that (the Ring category has already been created).
| Chains - create new category titled Chain
|
Still the plan.
| Chest armor - move to Large Figure Part
|
Still the plan. One objection based on the fact that these weren't used
in large figures, but the mechs in which they were used are large compared to
minifigures. Other alternative is to create a Mid-Size Figure Parts category
and that doesn't seem wise. I think the part will fit in Large Figure Part
fine.
| Finials - move to new Ball category
|
Only one objection to these too, with suggested category being Plate, Round.
I don't feel like they fit there. My thinking is that they are balls with
a stand. Still open to other opinions - in the absence of any, will move to
Ball.
| Hand, Mechanical - move to Large Figure Part
|
Still the plan. See above.
| Human Tools - create new category titled Accessory, Human Tool
|
No objections raised. Still the plan.
| Infinity Stones - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
I was swayed on this one. I like the idea of a Minifigure, Treasure category,
but ultimately decided to go with Rock as another user suggested. The Rock category
isn't large and these will fit well there.
| Light Cover - move to Cone
|
This one was quite contentious. I'm going to hold off on it for a bit until
I get the rest of the stuff looked at. Ultimately, I'm leaning toward the
solution three users suggested: Bar. So Bar with Light Cover or something
like that.
| Obscure Item - leave in other
|
Plan unchanged.
| Slides - create new category titled Slide
|
Not many people objected here, but some felt the rope bridge was a problem and
wanted to see these all combined with stairs and conveyors in one category.
The problem would be titling that category. You may notice that there aren't
many (if any) part categories which have titles like Stairs, Conveyors, Bridges,
and the Like. Part categories are simple, direct, and singular. That was wise
and I'd like to keep it that way. So I'll hold off on this one, too,
for further thought and await any further comments.
| Power Bursts - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
The consensus here was a new category titled Effect. Not a bad idea, but it
seems like it would be hard to understand. Even Power Effect seems questionable,
though better. It would be great if we could come up with a title to describe
all forms of effects (waves, flames, power bolts, etc.) and group them all together
as suggested.
I thought Plasma Effect would be perfect, but Wikipedia tells me that flame is
not a plasma. So what about Plasma / Gas Effect? Still no mention of flame
in the title, though, which some wanted to see. Open to suggestions and am hoping
for some along these lines.
| Rings - create new category titled Ring
|
New category already created (currently unpopulated). Someone suggested moving
the Atlantis keys to Minifigure, Utensil. Undecided on this, but will decide
soon.
| Rip Cords - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
No major objections. Still the plan. They're used solely by humans to propel
the Ninjago propellers.
| Rope Bridge - move to Stairs
|
See above. Tough one.
| Rotor, Spinjitzu - move to Propeller
|
Still the plan.
| Shaft Clip - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
One strong objection, but I still feel like this is the best place. The only
natural thing about Ninjago Spinjitzu sets are the figures. The handles and
everything attached to them, even the propellers, are technically human tools.
We don't have to get crazy technical about all that, but the Wing Holder
and Shaft Clip only fit with each other and have little use elsewhere (although
I have seen brick separators used in MOCs). They're no different than the
rip cords you pull on - all part of an assembly to launch stuff. I really believe
they fit here, but will entertain final objections.
A couple of people suggested Brick, Ornamental as a new category and I think
that is a good idea. However, I don't believe the time is right. That can
wait until we go into the parts reclassification project (which, based on what
I've seen, is going to stir quite the controversy). For now I'll put
it with the other very similar item already in Rock.
| Spike - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
Many people commented on this and the consensus was Minifigure, Weapon. So there
it goes. The alternative solution presented was Animal, Body Part.
| Spiral Pole - move to Hose
|
I really haven't looked closely at this part, but I think this is still the
plan.
| Spring - create new category titled Spring (some of these in Technic which could
be moved)
|
No objections. Still the plan.
| Spring Shooter - move to Brick, Modified
|
I'm really glad I started this discussion because you guys came up with a
great idea: a category for all parts that shoot stuff. They're currently
scattered around the catalog. So the plan is to create a new category titled
Projectile Launcher and move this there.
| Star Wars Multipack - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
Another somewhat controversial one. This will be wrong wherever it goes because
the parts are varied and the suggestion of a new category titled Multipack ain't
bad at all since there will be more of them in the future. Still have to think
about this one some more (still interested in suggestions).
| Tassel - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
Varied suggestions on this one. I think the new Chain category as someone suggested
would be most appropriate since it is essentially a chain with two links and
stuff on each link.
| Waves - create new category titled Wave
|
See Plasma Effect above.
| Wing / Sail Holder - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
See discussion above.
No objections. Still the plan.
| Zipline - move to new Accessory, Human Tool category
|
Now going to Hose with a modified title to account for the change.
My plan for the future involves creating specific written instructions/guidelines
for classifying things (sets, parts, figures, etc.). This will make it much
easier for all of us to know what is going on and to quickly see if something
doesn't belong where it is. It was needed from day one, of course, but perhaps
it is better coming now that we have a better idea of the wide variety of items
produced by TLG.
My goal is to make these guidelines simple, direct, and easy to follow and I'm
convinced that I really have my work cut out for me. And yes, as someone
mentioned, it would ultimately be better to create the written standards first
before moving (Other) items. The reason I'm doing it this way is to get
a feel for how the community feels about classification and to analyze my own
approach to it. Everything I learn here will help me understand how to create
guidelines and I don't think very many (hopefully none) of these parts will
need to be moved again.

Phlogiston?

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1113041
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
So Bar with Light Cover or something
like that.
|
So far so good. Take one more vote for Bar please.
|
|
|
|
It makes sense to lump them together. I would maybe add Ladder as well. Can't
think of a name for the New category though but it sounds like moving something
(or minifig) from one point to another.
|
| Power Bursts - move to Minifigure, Utensil
|
The consensus here was a new category titled Effect. Not a bad idea, but it
seems like it would be hard to understand. Even Power Effect seems questionable,
though better. It would be great if we could come up with a title to describe
all forms of effects (waves, flames, power bolts, etc.) and group them all together
as suggested.
I thought Plasma Effect would be perfect, but Wikipedia tells me that flame is
not a plasma. So what about Plasma / Gas Effect? Still no mention of flame
in the title, though, which some wanted to see. Open to suggestions and am hoping
for some along these lines.
| Rings - create new category titled Ring
|
New category already created (currently unpopulated). Someone suggested moving
the Atlantis keys to Minifigure, Utensil. Undecided on this, but will decide
soon.
|
No problem with the Minifigure, Utensil here (although I have some ideas to group
some of them, I will leave that for a later time).
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
I'm on the Animal, Body Part camp for a long time now (this one was discussed
before) and LEGO themselves (for what is worth) called this Dorsal Fin, but
I understand the Minifigure, Weapon vote.
| | Spiral Pole - move to Hose
|
I really haven't looked closely at this part, but I think this is still the
plan.
|
I think the issue with this piece is the one that goes together and which is
currently on the Minifigure, Utensil category. It would make sense to have them
in the same category.
|
|
|
|
|
I'd go for Multipack for the time being. It is not bad until something better
comes up.
|
|
|
|
|
Great work, thank you!

BTW, clearing out the parts in the (Other) category will NOT have any effects

this by creating the category Ball and moving the ball on the list there. The
category merging created the error, not adding new categories.

Oh, I didn't realise they were used like that. I still think it should be
at Animal,Accessory, because if you are going to categorise on shape, then you
might as well do it for all parts, all foods for example: Ice cream cones should
be cones, carrots should be cones or bars, sausages should be bar.. but no, I
think it's ok things get categorised based on their first appearance / most
logical appearance. I think in the case of the beehive it is clear that the part
was designed as a beehive, and then later reinterpreted as candy floss. If they
designed a candy floss part from the start, it would not have these characteristic
bee hive bands. In my opinion it's just part of LEGO creativity that you
often see in modern sets (especially modular buildings) that happens to all parts
(feathers, skis, plumes, ...) and doesn't affect their catalog identity.
Still, I hadn't realised that before so I do understand the reasoning now.
That does make the choice for Cone a bit more bearable

As WoutR already pointed out, Beehives aren’t made by bees but by minifigs… er

Bees live in hollow trunks or such cavities, they don’t build such nests.

This part already is:
1. a (man-made) beehive,
2. a cotton-candy,
And it can be:
3. a wasp or hornet nest,
4. a Chinese lantern,
5. a Bibendum head,
and undoubtedly many many other things, especially when other colours will appear.
It already has too many very different usages.
Therefore, we can’t categorize it according to its usages.
Therefore, we only can use its shape and connectivity for categorization purposes.
(Moreover and anyway, shape and connectivity should always be the main features
used for categorization as usage generally isn’t known when you stumble upon
the part and are using the catalogue to find it.)
And this part is cone-based, sort of, and can go on a minifig head.
So it’s a Cone or a Minifig Hat.

Now I'm confused, I thought this beehive shape is a cartoonesque representation
of bee/wasp nest in trees (that actually look like this)? Or are they like
jugs or something like that made by beekeepers? I tried to google but I don't
find any "real" version (man made or otherwise) of this type of beehive, that's
why I'm still not sure... :o
So my comparison with spiderweb could be off, though it doesn't exactly matter
for the Animal,Accessory argument in and of itself because they are usually man
made anyway.
But you're right if this part will be used for other stuff in the future.
It would be much like the fez situation then. I don't actually expect it,

Yes, you are right, the ' cone ' shape is a cartoonesque representation
of a bee nest, naturally made by bees. [Do an image search on ' Bee
Nest ']. The real thing is more a ball or egg shape in dark tan (ish) color/colour.
Bee hives are man/minifig made and bee nests are naturally made
by bees.

Look at Wikipedia, they have pictures (esp. on English and French versions, a
little less on the “Nederlands” one).
Some wasps and hornets make roundish nests (cardboard-looking material which
is actually saliva and dirt or wood), but they don’t show rings. And they aren’t
bees.
Only some man-made rope hives show rings.
And man has kept bees for milleniums, so the shape is in our cultural memories.

Yes, because it goes around a head but on the other hand, when you have the piece
in hand and don’t know what it is, do you readily realize it goes around a head
and think “Hat!” or do you first look at its conical shape?

I actually had a second thought on this one, and I would just like to 'type
in out loud' . This, as the name suggests, is an architectural object
so I was wondering whether this should go into new category (but I cannot
think of a good name) that contains other architectural objects like ,
perhaps masonry profiles like , and perhaps even .
However after that thought, 'Ball' seems the most appropriate category
especially to someone with the finial in their hand and no idea where it came
from or what is used to represent.

An interesting idea which you might bring up again when we get into the parts
reclassification project. In the end, though, you have to keep in mind that
people will be looking for the nearest thing they can think of to the unidentified
object they have.
So the masonry profile brick, for example, is definitely used as a decorative
architectural object. In reality, though, it is simply a 1 x 2 brick which has
been modified and that is likely where people would go looking for it: the Brick,
Modified category.
Again, though, we can discuss all of this when that project starts. It will
still be a little time until then.

Take this as just one vote, but that's taking it too far for me. I'm
ok with the Energy Effect category and believe it's an improvement. But moving
such large volumes of basic parts to a new category is stretching it to far for
me. It's exactly the example I mean where there is minimal gain (a masonry
brick really still is a brick modified) and the cost is pretty big. I have hand
built my storage walls and their sizes are all designed for the existing categories.
I have coded software to analyse the frequency of use of all of the bins and
position those at arm height. Everything has been meticulously designed trusting
the catalog is a stable entity. Changing it this drastically will give me a great
deal of work, it already took me 2 weeks of making excel sheets to come up with
the design I have now and it was really a difficult puzzle to make everything
fit in the limited space that I have. That's something I will gladly go through
again (and actually risk I will not get things to fit a second time) if it means
catalog improvement (such as the Energy Effect category, which is both uncontestably
better and a small volume of parts - great improvement), but when it is about
moving substantial volumes of ambiguous parts from one partially adequate category
to another, I will need to cast a "nay".

Agreed, and thank you for sharing how your sorting system works. I want to encourage
discussion, but I do not plan to make major changes to a whole bunch of parts.
This project is still a ways off and we will have written definitions of part
categories and plenty of discussion before anything is moved.
The things I anticipate could move (not will, but only could) are things
which people have argued about for years, like Tile, Modified vs. Plate, Modified.
See the last example given in this post:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1112599
Once we have written definitions of each part category, then some things may
need to be moved to comply with those definitions. But even the definitions
will be open for discussion. I'll probably write them all out first and
then present them for discussion and possible modification. I'm not going
to be like the dude on the mountain handing down edicts on stone tablets.
The goal of all of this is to reduce confusion and disarray, not add to it, and
I am aware that sellers have systems in place based on the catalog. If the catalog
is inconsistent in certain places, though, we should not force future generations
to live with that because it is inconvenient for us to change in the present.
Anyway, I don't see how anyone could object to uncategorized items finally
being categorized, so right now that's what I'm focusing on.

Thanks for taking note, that sounds reasonable. I guess my point is that there's
correcting the catalog and reimagining the catalog, and as long as we stay with
the former, that's all good.
Yes, I understand the trouble with Tile,Modified. What I associate most with
tiles and what gives it the "tile" feel to me is the groove, but I also understand
that there are type variations in this so that probably disqualifies that characteristic
for categorising. An option is moving everything with studs to Plate,Modified.
I have never thought of those big plates with missing studs in the middle as
"tiles", nor do their dimensions match anything that reminds of tiles (in fact,
NONE of them have dimensions that we see echoed in the tile category!). This,
by the way, is a really good example of where for me the comfort limit is. A
bit of hassle, but it would be just within the range of what I can handle without
having to redesign and reassign things, and I could see the benefit.

Why do you let BL dictate how you organise your stock? It is your
physical LEGO elements, not Bricklinks. It is your warehouse. If
you use the 'Remarks' field for your warehouse location and/or warehouse
categories, why do you need to use Brcklink categories? The 'Remarks'
field comes up on orders, and can be adjusted by lot rather than just part (Bricklink
categories are only based on parts and not lots). Use BL for a guide, or suggestion
on how to catgorise your warehouse, but do not use BL to organise your warehouse.
The BL catalog should be buyer based, your inventory (using 'Remarks'
field) is your catalog supplier based just for you.

Then I would need to write remarks for each and every lot. I have frequently
discussed category sorting vs remark sorting, and I just really do not believe
that remark sorting would work for me. It has alot of drawbacks and also I do
not see how it can be done properly without Brickstock, which is useless to me
as it does not feature the European priceguide.

| I'm really interested to see how this goes.
I just took a couple minutes to look at the stuff in the 'Other)' category.
For the parts, it looks like a lot of them would be fairly simple (lots of minifig
accessories), but there's a couple that will be interesting (the slide parts,
for instance).
The Sets in the (Other) category are the real interesting ones to me. A lot of
these fall into an (Other) that is actually a sub-category of another main category.
Should these stay this way? Since a number of them are promotional items, does
there need to be a Promotional category? If BrickLink supported multiple Categories
(or Tags!) on a item, I'd say yes, but since it doesn't, it seems like
it isn't quite as clear-cut.
I take that back... Sets are pretty simple compared to Gear and Books. Where
on earth would you put ?

How about "Co-Brand Promotional"? This would indicate that the sets were: (a)
issued together with another company's branding and is not part of the LEGO
Promotional items; (b) that these might only have been exclusively available
at some place other than TLG; (c) makes it easier to both find in and add to
the catalog. You might have to retitle some to include the co-branding though.

| OK, I have read through the comments and I would like to add my two cents:
* | | 35574 Cone 2 x 2 x 1 2/3 with Stacked Rings (Beehive / Cotton Candy) Parts: Cone |
In bright light orange this looks like the stereotypical natural beehive, but
if someone has this in bright pink they may not see it as a beehive. So I agree
with [StormChaser] and go with its shape and go into 'Cone'.
[p=36451c01]
These should go into a new category called 'Gem' or 'Gemstone'
or 'Crystal'. Then move the small items from 'Rock' into here.
* | | 58176 Bar with Light Bulb Cover (Bionicle Barraki Eye) Parts: Bar |
I agree with [leopard37], move to 'Bar'.
I am undecided about this part, but I'm going with [leopard37] and [bje]
for 'Minifig, Weapon', although I originally thought 'Plant'
(as in prickly plant stem).
Waves
Can we name the new category 'Waves/Flames'?
Everything else seems appropriate to me.

Wow. LEGO has produced so much peripheral rubbish I wouldn't like to be

TLG has had a huge number of licensing agreements with other companies and I
am certain that there are tens of thousands of LEGO-branded items which are still
not in the BrickLink catalog. Many of them are lost and will never be added.
Even today it's not unheard of to come across an older LEGO set which the
fan community has never documented. I've done so numerous times and I know
of one from the 1990s right now which I haven't got around to adding - picture
below.
I like that we include obscure stuff in the catalog, even if it's never bought
or sold. It makes BrickLink the most complete reference catalog anywhere for
all things LEGO.

Okay, here is my plan for minifigures. Let's discuss it.
All of these to Holiday. One or more birthday figures are already there. Might
do Holiday: Party Supplies or may add new Birthday Party category. May also
add new Wedding category.
Both to LEGO Brand with subcategories (LEGO Brand Store, LEGO Inside Tour, etc.).
Promotional.
Holiday. Perhaps Holiday: Wedding if I add that category.
LEGO Brand.
Promotional.
LEGO Brand.
Promotional.
Tough one, but Holiday: Halloween. There have clearly been different opinions
over the years on how to classify minifigures and there are inconsistencies in
the catalog. Since no written policies currently exist and the intent was to
keep all the ghosts together, I'd like to respect that and move them as a
group. Same goes for skeletons further below.
LEGO Brand.
Same as bride (see above).
LEGO Brand.
[M=gen096]
Promotional. Yes, it is going to be deleted. Until then, there's no reason
not to move it.
LEGO Brand.
Building Bigger Thinking.
Office and School Supplies. Or wherever that gear ends up (currently uncategorized).
Building Bigger Thinking.
Not inventoried in an item. Goes in a storage item. Taking suggestions on where
to put it.
Same as pln170 just three figures above.
Constructing Larger Thought Processes.
Promotional.
LEGO Brand.
Collectible Minifigures.
LEGO Brand.
Holiday: Halloween. See discussion about ghosts above.
LEGO Brand.
Promotional.
LEGO Brand.

over the years on how to classify minifigures and there are inconsistencies in
the catalog. Since no written policies currently exist and the intent was to
keep all the ghosts together, I'd like to respect that and move them as a
group. Same goes for skeletons further below.

The short answer is yes. However, if you look at the minifigure overview page
you'll notice that minifigures are categorized by theme:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogTree.asp?itemBrand=1000&itemType=M
They're not categorized by what they are, but by which theme they came from
(generally speaking - there are inconsistencies). So there are Town: City: Hospital
and Town: City: Airport but not Town: Doctor or Town: Pilot or Town: Plumber.
Creating new categories Ghost and Skeleton would be contrary to the current cataloging
system. I'm not saying it is a bad idea, but it would increase inconsistency
in the catalog. The other option for ghosts and skeletons would be to move them
into the individual themes from which they came (since my idea of Halloween doesn't
seem too popular).
In response to axaday's suggestion about moving zombies, I say look at this
page of zombies:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogListOld.asp?catType=M&q=zombie&catLike=W&itemBrand=1000&searchMethod=searchBoth
If we moved all the zombies into one place we'd be pulling them from these
categories:
Minecraft
Star Wars
Pirates of the Caribbean
Game
Scooby-Doo
Monster Fighters
Collectible Minifigures
Ghostbusters
Holiday
Once we did that, those categories would no longer be complete because that is
not the way minifigures are categorized. I thought it would be nice to keep
the ghosts and skeletons together, but I guess they really should be moved into
the themes from which they came (as nearly as possible). So that's the new
plan if no one objects.

What with this one for example then in this way of moving them:
it is in sets from four different categories!
First set in which it came was Star Wars
- 2013
then was it added to set from Halloween -2015, The Ninjago Movie -2017 and recently
Creator -2018
I do not want to see it in SW category

I always liked having the skeletons and ghosts in one place for ease of finding
them to collect (I am a horror hound), but I feel there current classification
was more based out of tradition than any policy.
It always felt weird to me that the ghosts from the Monster Fighters theme were
classified in (Other) away from all other Monster Fighters figures. So in this
case, if you are collecting Monster Fighters figures (like I did), you don't
see them all in one place.
Therefore, I am all for moving them into their themes where they occurred if
possible, such as those Monster Fighters ghosts. I do think there may be some
serious theme overlap for some of the early figures, though. Those are going
to be contentious, and a simple solution for some of them may not present itself.
Cheers,
Randy

There really are no rules for categorizing minifigures, or at least none which
are written. For example, look at the minifigures included in this set and where
they were categorized:
Right now I'm just clearing out the (Other) category and not all solutions
will be perfect. Later on we can look at how all minifigures are categorized
and come up with standard practices for how it should be done.

It does seem like the only real option is to move each figure into it's 'source'
category. It's unfortunate that these type of figures (which can span categories)
can't belong to multiple categories, but that's a huge can of worms.

| I'd say go with a Skeleton & Ghost category, but retain the numbering system
with "Gen" (at least for now). Because many of these span multiple series, I
cannot see a better way to do it.

That opens us up to a Construction Worker category and a Space Alien category
and a Race Car Driver category, etc., etc., etc. Writing those words gave me
an idea, though: I will ask to see how feasible it would be to include a second
list at the bottom of the minifigure page where figures are categorized by profession/appearance/clothing.
That would be quite convenient, I would imagine.
People can still use the keyword "ghost" to find all the ghosts in the catalog,
just as they can use the keyword "zombie" to find all the zombies in the catalog.
I was actually just now in the process of categorizing ghosts and skeletons.
I don't think there will be any significant problems from category overlap.
And yes, I'm leaving the item numbers alone.

Meh. Ignore that. I was thinking of the list at the bottom of the Parts page
where you can see the categories of sticker sheets. I realize now how that data
is populated and it would take a whole lot of work to do something similar for
minifigures. Would be nice, but impractical.

I agree. Exception or not
I would also create the Plain Torso category. Ok maybe thats going too far.
If reasonable is it possible to keep their bricklink reference (gen001 etc) though?
There's not much gain in changing them I'd think.
Thank you!

Okay, so now we can discuss it properly.
As a quick update:
Parts are completely done.
Sets are done once the LEGO Brand categories can be used again (I still
need to know if LEGO World is an official LEGO event or not, though - so far
no one has answered).
Minifigures are done (with three exceptions) once the LEGO Brand categories
can be used.
Catalogs needed no work.
Books and Gear, then, are really the only things left. Books should
be easy, Gear not so much. It was the biggest (Other) group of all of them for
a reason. Still, I've knocked over 200 items off the (Other) list for gear.
There are 47 (Other) books and I really doubt anyone is going to care too much
where they go. These aren't exactly big sellers. I was thinking of moving
the competition forms to Gear. The Books section has gotten a little watered
down and forms which you fill out in hopes of winning a prize definitely aren't
books. I haven't thought about where they'd go once they get over to
Gear.
Ephemera, though, is a word not in common usage. I don't think it fits well
as a category with Bedding, Video Game, Storage, Magnet, Clock, and other common
words already used as categories. Not that it ain't a fun word, but I think
it's one of those somewhat esoteric words which would appeal primarily to
people with large vocabularies and discountenance everyone else by virtue of
its inscrutability.

I like to think that a have a rather large vocabulary, and even I had to go and
look up the meaning for 'ephemera'. If one needs to look up the definition
for a category name, then I think that is a good indicator that the name is too
obtuse. I think two new categories called 'Competition Forms' and 'Event
Guides' would be rather nice and simple.

| Once again I would first like to congratulate [StormChaser] and the community
on the progress made in the ' (Other) ' Category Project.
I would like to raise my points to a few things in clearing out the ' Gear
(Other) ' category:
[1] Accessory, Human Tool - Rip Cords
The ' Accessory, Human Tool ' category has been created and it blurs
the line between a Part and Gear. I guess we should wait until all part categories
have been properly defined, however, the category has already been created and
rip cords have already been added. Therefore I suggest we move these gear ...
[g=ripcordcover1][g=ripcordcover2]
... as parts in the ' Accessory, Human Tool ' category. Also rename
them
" Human Tool, Rip Cord Handle Cover in Flexible Rubber with Lion Head for Chima
Speedorz "
and
" Human Tool, Rip Cord Handle Cover in Flexible Rubber with Crocodile Head for
Chima Speedorz "
, respectively.
This leaves ...
... which under the Human Tool definition should be sets and not gear.
[2] Accessory, Human Tool - Ruler
For the same reason as above, I suggest we merge the ruler set inventory with
the ruler (see also https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1060834). So merge
...
... into ...
[p=bb342]
So in the same manner gear ...
...should become a set.
