Anyone know whether the new plant pieces will be distinguishable from the old?

Tyson.

I was very concerned when Lego announced this a few years ago that what they
meant was "biodegradable". But that wasn't it at all.

As was I! I am extremely glad that the new pieces will have the longevity/durability
of the existing ones.

If they are indistinguishable I assume there will be no new catalog entries?
Perhaps they are getting new part numbers?

According to this great review (better than brickset) http://www.newelementary.com/2018/07/sustainable-lego-plants-made-from-sugarcane.html
these parts don't have new numbers. The are not new moulds.

This would be a nightmare from a cataloging/inventory perspective. Fortunately,
it doesn't appear necessary.
