only 2, in the mixed instructions 8040+8700 the #3705 comes from the 8700 set

then you also add the motor and wire etc... and that's not the intention

I'm a little hesitant to change this inventory because the source was sealed
set contents (always preferable to set instructions). However, the member who
added the inventory only inventoried 6 sets:

As you can see by looking at the list of sets, there's no real pattern in
the sets inventoried and the source for all of the sets was sealed set contents.
Therefore, I consider an error possible.
If you can find any other evidence regarding the correct number of axles I would
appreciate it. I'll leave the request open for a few days to consider it
and (hopefully) await more information from yourself or other members who own
this set.

I'm a little hesitant to change this inventory because the source was sealed

also '3' with comment 'one for use with 8700'
Inventory was done by instructions but was verified as MISB.

| Far from conclusive, but I see a couple indications online (inlcuding peeron
& toyperiod) that the set may have been advertised as 161 pieces but in fact
come with 163 (with an extra 4-stick as well as an extra 1/2-bushing). If accurate,
the fix for bricklink's inventory might be to add the third 1/2-bushing rather
than remove the unnecessary-per-instructions third 4-stick.
Always a challenge when extra parts are involved! If only we'd all taken
photos of everything being unboxed in the 80's...
At any rate, I’m happy to concede it is possible I lost a 4-stick somewhere over
the years, and with such an odd, tiny set of "extras" potentially included in
this set my change request should likely be ignored!

The official piece count for the set is indeed 161 (see attached image). I would
say the Peeron inventory is very good, and that the original BrickLink inventory
is likely a cut and paste from Peeron. Hence why there is no large image for
this part:

I found something I can actually help with!
I have a new 8040 set, the parts are sealed but the box seal has come loose.
I just checked the bag that contains the 4L axle and there are indeed 3 of them
in the bag.

Well, now we know. 
Thanks for your assistance - it is definitely appreciated. I will be leaving
the number of 4L axles at 3.
It would be even more appreciated if you would post some large, clear, close
photos of the set and individual bags of parts in response to this message.
This thread will never be deleted, so your pictures may help solve other issues
in the future.

Any chance you can verify the extra 1/2 bushing in-bag? As bricklink's current
inventory stands as 162 pieces, making it different from both the parts advertised
and other online inventories...
