| Hey folks!
I think this option is counter-productive for buyers. (See image below)
Sellers are allowed to turn off the display of cart weight in their store, even
if the buyer has chosen to see cart weight.
This means that if buyers are cost-of-shipping-sensitive, they have to manually
calculate the cart weight, or ask the seller for a quote.
Why force this upon ourselves when the website can automatically do it for us?
I suggest we force sellers to have the weight of cart shown within their store.
Thanks for voting!

| Yes, but isn't that how BL calculates weight/postage band for those sellers
who have auto-shipping enabled? They cannot have it both ways!
So, perhaps a repeat of the disclaimer that weights may not be accurate should
be displayed at checkout?
Or are you saying sellers should be forced to NOT display the cart weight?

| Yeah, I guess It's a good point - in its current form it's not good and
reliable enough to be mandatory. But as I said in the other thread, the solution
isn't to make a mediocre feature optional, but make the feature work properly.
A program or website should at least pretend its features are perfect, otherwise
they should just be left out completely. Existing entries should be guaranteed
accurate and new entries to the catalog should trigger a disabling of shopping
cart weight estimation, until they are verified accurate.

| I would agree if the weight shown was accurate. Currently there is only a single
weight in the catalog for each part when there are known differences in weight
based on mold variations, different colours, age of the part, etc. When purchased
in larger quantities the difference in catalog weight and actual weight can be
significant.
The catalog weight is intended as a guideline only and should remain as such
until it is more accurate.

I think the difference in weight for parts in different colors is very small,
let's say 1% or less.
Don't know for sure but it will be a really small difference.
If someone, for instance, orders 100 parts or even 1000 parts, it goes into grams
so I understand your point of view.
On the other hand, in this case we already speak of a large volume order and
shippingcosts almost would not be affected by a few grams when it will already
weigh far over 100 grams or even 1000 grams.
In my experience this is about the same in other country's.
Also, indeed, the catalog weight is a guideline but a very handy guideline.
Even if there are slight variations it is, imho, a necessary function.
By the way, I see more variations in set weights than in parts. Some medium sized
sets can have differences of about 5%. And this I see quite often.
So I voted YES for making this a non optional feature.

Here's an idea... if you spot something that's wrong, why not help everyone
out and update it, that way, one day, we'll be able to have nice things like
automatic checkout (something that Italian law says is mandatory, but y'know,
because some people prefer to live in the dark ages, let's all keep burning

Hi,
Some items can have different weight, it depend on where TLG has producted those
pieces. ( unfortunately it's very hard to certificate that ).
Probably a lot of people are still in dark age.

I'm aware of the subtle differences in weight but for this shouldn't
really stop progress. Once every blue moon or so these discrepancies might result
in a wrong shipping charge. This isn't a problem unique to Bricklink and
every other online retailer successfully deals with it.
Does anyone have any idea how many sales are lost because users are being asked
to commit to buy with no indication of the final, total cost? (Which as I said,
is against Italian law.) Impulse sales make up a small but still substantial
part of all online sales, and anything that gets in the way of a user's streamlined
progress to submitting payment, and you risk losing that sale.
I for one often end up buying what I need on Ebay, even though BL is cheaper,
simply to avoid an unknown final cost and the unknowable length of delay until
the seller presents me with a chance to complete the purchase.
It's madness that some still argue in favour of the status quo.

You might as well say that all weights are wrong, as they don't contain enough
decimal places. Does it actually affect postage costs? Probably not. Differences
in order weights caused by decimal places or different colours are likely
to be negligible compared to the weight of internal (bags, etc) and external
(box, tape, labels) packaging for the order.
Order weights shown to buyers are a guide only anyway, since they don't account
for the packaging weights and the buyer will not know those unless the seller
lists them.

Hi,
of course, you have right. But if a buyer see a weight in his shopping cart,
and that weight is not really correct, how you can explain problem to the person.
He see that weight, and it's correct for his mind. This is what I would think

Voted no.
However, this does not mean it comes without consequence. There have been several

If they don't have the quote option enabled, nothing is stopping you from
asking the seller for a manual quote.
For various reasons, I don't like the quote system BL has in place, and don't
have it enabled.
I probably lose sales because of that, but my shipping table isn't THAT difficult
to figure out and for the odd buyer who 1. Doesn't know to check for shipping

a quote ... I am always happy to oblige

Sometimes I will ask manually for a quote, sometimes I will not. Depends on
the availability of the part(s) from other sellers.
I would go ahead and order from your shop based on the shipping table provided.

there
is a link for "item display settings" which will bring up the option for buyers

there
is a link for "item display settings" which will bring up the option for buyers
to view cart weight. Shoppers must be logged in or the link will not display.

| Only if we can force buyers to automatically remove some funds from their PayPal
to cover any shipping cost increases after the total package is weighed
I've lost a little bit of money so far due to wrong weight. This is a big
reason why I charge an extra dollar on all orders in order to make sure I'm
not losing money on orders from miscalculated shipping costs.
