I was talking with a friend about slow sales and discussing ideas. She is not
a Lego person, AT ALL. That being said, she went here tonight and said, I quote,
"It looks like a site from the 80's." Ok that might be a little harsh, but
wow, that hit me hard. With prompting, she went on to say that if you used Amazon
when it first came out, it looked like BL. This is my livelihood and I am concerned.
Thoughts?

It really does. This is what people mean when they say BrickLink is outdated.
Sure, it functions "just fine" for people who have been here since the beginning
and are used to it. But having a site that looks like it came from the 90s really
isn't the best way to get new customers.

BrickLink administration knows this, to some extent. But there has been so much
backlash from the BL community to any sort of modernization that progress has
been very, very gradual. The recent redesign is a step in the right direction,
but I hope it doesn't stay stagnant.

Search "early screenshots of amazon" and it will bring back memories of the old
BL.

She's either full of crap (forgot what early websites looked like) or just
messing with you.

Very few people were actually using the Internet (or its precursors) in the 80's
and Amazon. Com didn't get launched til 1994 ...so your friend exaggerates.

And you can your friend, I don't like the way Amazon looks and feels either;
too much sizzle and not enough steak.

Lol, craigslist looks more like a dated website from the "80's". The new
layout for BL, imo, looks a lot more like Ebay not necessarily in style but in
a similar feel and layout. These types of buy and sell websites do need to
look flashy, they need to get the job done.

Amazon is a billion dollar company. It is silly to compare this site to Amazon.
Good luck trying to make a living by using Bricklink. Some people say they do,
but they must be living with someone who also is making a living somewhere else.

As one of those "some people", I actually do make my living on BL and have for
the last 7 years. Never missed mortgage or have been late on a bill. My husband
was laid off at that time so we have been busy selling fulltime here. It is
quite possible to do. It just takes time.

How does sharing expenses with someone mean that you aren't making a living?
If you look at what you're saying again, it would mean that the other person
in that scenario is also not making a living (because they are sharing expenses
with someone), and yet you explicitly state that they are making a living.
???

Last year, BrickLink made me as much money as my previous job did, where I had
been working for 12 years, and managed 200 people. (This year, not quite!)

Morning

Not sure it matters what it looks like it is how it functions or doesn't
as the case may be. New users are having trouble getting to grips with the site
and experienced users haven't taken to the new features as had been hoped.
There are still far too many issues and of course a total lack of communication
from BL themselves doesn't help. Sales have been slower than previously for
a great many stores, but there are probably a multitude of reasons for that not
just the site changes. There have been lots and lots of posts about this subject.
It would, however be helpful for BL themselves to join the dialogue and provide
some meaningful information about this subject. It would also be a good idea
to re-publish the so called development 'roadmap' so we can see where
we are at as a community - oops business. RIP Community.

As for making a living out of BL, I think the comment needs to be looked at in
many ways - define making a living - that is different for different people.
Those of us who choose to do this full time or as close as dammit have to make
adjustments when income levels are lower than they have been but that doesn't
mean we are not making a living. Individuals determine whether they are making
a living or not - not stereotypes.

There is, in our opinion, a lot to be looking at over the current state of BL,
not least of which is sales, but followed closely by support - pretty much non-existent
on weekends or after working hours (I thought we were a 24/7 by 365 day operation).

Amazon are one of the world's largest on-line businesses now but they went
through a very difficult time in the early days, losing money hand over foot
- but they survived and prospered and BL can do the same provided they listen
to their customers and we as store owners are their customers. The buyers on
this site are our customers using this marketplace.

Just our thoughts on a misty Sunday morning in the UK.

I am reminded of my late mother who once disapprovingly described my girlfriend
at the time as being "more decorative than functional". I concluded thereafter
that wisdom dictates; "more functional than decorative" is preferable to the
alternative.

Awesome!

BL has its problems but IMO looking a bit retro is one of its assets.

I have no intention of customising my 1980's Audi quattro to look like an
"up to the minute" non-car that we see on the roads every day now.

You could say Lego bricks "look like toys from the 1950's" but the fact they
they remain largely unchanged and fully compatible is one of the main reasons
we are all here.

I trust that girlfriend is not your wife OR she doesn't read the forum

No, my wife is both decorative and functional (and reads the forum)
