| Please make changes to the following inventory:
* Change 10 Part Black {4599 Tap 1 x 1 to 4599a Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in End}
Comments from Submitter:
Undetermined variant 4599 is marked for deletion. This set must have had 4599a because it was produced before the introduction of 4599b.

The introduction date for 4599b is shown as 2004. This set is shown as a 2005
set.
Please verify these dates and which type of tap was included in this set before

Thea, please note that the year for parts is not the "introduction" or "release"
year of the part but of the sets it came in.
If a set was produced over a long period, like
and later production runs came with a part version which was introduced years
after the initial release year of the set, it will show up with that year even
if it only showed up in the latest production run.
If you look at the inventory of 7239, you'll also note that 4599b is listed
as alternate, typical for newer versions to be found in a later production run.
The first sets in which 4599b appeared as regular part were released in 2009.

This was exactly my point by asking for date verification.
Using the basic premise of "define the part, not its function"
should show the year it was first produced, not the "first produced" year of
a set that it appeared in later as an alternate.

According to Brickset set 7239 was in production until 2011 so that explains
why it has 4599b as alternate. Based in 4599b's appearance in sets I have
started checking sets from 2007 in my personal collection to make sure that 4599a
was still included in sets in 2007. And I plan to do the same for sets from 2008
before submitting change requests for those sets.
It is likely that all listings for 4599 in set inventories are really 4599a but
it is possible that some of the later sets were listed by mistake because not
all inventory contributors carefully check for part variants, especially new
part variants that they are not yet aware of. But it is also not unusual for
Lego to have two or more part variants in production at the same time and they
often also use up their old stock before including new variants in sets.

Hi Paul,
I would like to say Thank You for what was and will continue to be a massive
amount of work. I did not mean to imply that this change shouldn't be made.
Just that your use of the dates as the reason might appear incorrect.
I was aware of the method used to list a part's date before I made my original
post. But new members may not be, and they may think that the "b" version of
this part was in production in 2004. Especially since the part's page for
the "a" version currently shows it only being from 1984-1999.

Bear with poor Jen who has to approve 100s of change requests for this part.
Once the rest of the requests are approved, the 'a' version will show
a later year, stay tuned
Then, we'll probably have 1984-2013 for 'a' and 2004-2016 for 'b'.

Under the current system it's not possible to automatically detect when a
new variant first appeared in a set.
For example 7239 obviously had several production runs. How will you know which
run first contained the new variant?
When a new variant is produced, and newly released sets contain this variant,
it's still possible - and proven - that the older variant will appear in
these sets as Lego is notoriouly known to not throw away any old parts.

| I appreciate the amount of work you're putting into retiring 4599. Kudos!
I would hope similar actions will be taken for all parts where an alternative
has been introduced for. (like the 4273...)
