I am aware that this has been suggested many times before by various people and
unfortunately nothing has ever been done about it but perhaps now is the time
to bring it back up.

When a new used comes to Bricklink they are faced with lots of hurdles - they
will not recognise the Bricklink part numbering system; and in lots of cases
the colours as many of them have totally different names.

The Lego stores also call colours differently e.g. Dark Blue to them is their
standard blue brick and if you ask for Earth Blue - they often look at you with
a puzzled look, even though that is an official Lego Colour name. The same with
Green etc.

So, with that in mind could the Bricklink developers not come up with a better
idea than the current colour chart for the catalogue. Perhaps similar to the
very old and outdated Peeron one.

It would help the new buyers - and after all we give them the option to key in
the number at the back of the Lego instructions to find a part (and little do
they know by using that number they get the part in the correct colour).

Bricklink want to encourage new buyers and as a store we want that as well -
but let us give them the tools do make it easier for them not more complicated.

I don't think most new users know the official Lego colours any more than
they know BL colours. BL colour names are used widely outside of BL too. Changing
would probably cause more pain than benefit.

You have misinterpreted my suggestion. I did not suggest changing I asked to
have the Lego colour names added to the colour charts.

Actually, you didn't really make any suggestions. The closest thing to a
suggestion was: "...could the Bricklink developers not come up with a better

I agree with calsbricks that new customers that come to BL probably don't
know the official Lego colors any more then BL's. I also agree with what
you suggested above that it would be nice to have the Lego official colors added
to the color chart, providing that Lego dose not cause legal issues with the
Lego Group.

I would not favour "changing" any BL colour names but I would like to see a user
friendly colour reference section explaining colours (especially as you say for
new users).

Overall, to me this is a "help" issue. BL has never been strong on its user guide/help
guide but a succession of changes to the functionality and navigation of the
site have left it with a useless one. This remains a complex site with many different
areas including colours which old hands take for granted but must confuse the
hell out of new users. Overall... new intuitive help guide please.

Once they get the LDD to Wanted List import working, I think it would be crucial
to have a proper color chart/map defined and in place.

Don´t know if that´s really correct, but i heard, that BL is not allowed to use
the Lego color names, since they are "owned" by tlc.
Lugnet, or a similar old site from the 2000´s also made up their own color names,
different from BL and TLC then, maybe just because of this.

Just ask the Catmin, he might know exactly.

I would be skeptical of that.
Otherwise because LEGO calls a color "Red" no one can use that anymore?
I don't think so.

The AFOL names have been made up because the official color names were unknown.
LEGO had not released any official color names at that time.

Now we do know the official color names, but many people are used to the unofficial
names that we have been using for a long time.

We voted yes for that as well but, as you are aware nothing has been done about
it - that is why we brought it back to the fore. It really would be helpful.

I agree.
I was cross-linking so both suggestions can support/enforce eachother.
