Actually, that is how the system is designed to work:

The Variable Color parts in an assembly are assigned their colors when the entire
part is assigned a color in an inventory or other listing. This allows for assemblies
to come in multiple colors. I realize that it is not ideal that they show up
without images when viewed on the part inventory page. This is something we were
trying to work with the BrickLink team to address. In the meantime, you can view
the inventory with the color images on the Catalog page by clicking the Part
Inventory tab.
