How do you know that TLG's box image is wrong but their inventory data is
right 
The OP worked "with the inventory listed in the instructions". These printed
inventories have been shown to be wrong in many instances (as well as some box
images). The OP should answer Russell's question.

No, I was not working with a sealed set. I simply checked the instructions and
found that a different head is listed there. Moreover, lego.com shows the same
head for this set. I might be wrong, blame me. But in that case TLG is also wrong...

No, I was not working with a sealed set. I simply checked the instructions and
found that a different head is listed there. Moreover, lego.com shows the same
head for this set. I might be wrong, blame me. But in that case TLG is also wrong...

Thanks for the images, and thanks also for the corrections you have submitted
for this inventory. Who knows how long it would have sat dormant if you hadn't
taken the initiative.
I have found three images of this elf head from online set reviews (see images
below). This is mounting evidence that the box images (front and back) are wrong.
I want to check with member WILYKAT before approving a change, though:
