I have looked at every available instruction showing bicycles, and it seems that
2009 was the first year where they are shown being assembled, in these 2 sets:

Set No: 7639  Name: Camper
*
7639-1 (Inv) Camper
157 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 2009
Sets: Town: City: Recreation

Set No: 7641 Name: City Corner
*
7641-1 (Inv) City Corner
463 Parts, 5 Minifigures, 2009
Sets: Town: City: Traffic
Before then, it appears bicycles always came completely assembled, and this is
not surprising seeing as Lego has gradually been moving from completely assembled
items to separate items, e.g. the turntable:

Part No: 3680c01  Name: Turntable 2 x 2 Plate with Light Gray Top (3680 / 3679)
*
3680c01 (Inv) Turntable 2 x 2 Plate with Light Gray Top (3680 / 3679)
Parts: Turntable
My question here is whether it was at this point that Lego started in with the
1-piece wheels. This would require moving back the timeline 2 years, which is
not unreasonable, given our caution assigning this new part earlier this year.
This would involve 4 regular sets, viz the 2 aforementioned sets and these:

Set No: 8404 Name: Public Transport
*
8404-1 (Inv) Public Transport
840 Parts, 6 Minifigures, 2010
Sets: Town: City: Traffic

Set No: 7498 Name: Police Station
*
7498-1 (Inv) Police Station
759 Parts, 6 Minifigures, 2011
Sets: Town: City: Police
Anybody have any other thoughts on this, or sealed set information on any set
with a bicycle?

The single-part wheel had Design ID 92851.

Part No: 92842 Name: Propeller 3 Blade 5 Diameter
*
92842 Propeller 3 Blade 5 Diameter
Parts: Propeller
first appeared in 2010.

Part No: 92862 Name: Minifigure Cape Cloth, Invisibility Cloak Iridescent
*
92862 Minifigure Cape Cloth, Invisibility Cloak Iridescent
Parts: Minifigure, Body Wear
first appeared in 2010.

Therefore, I think it is safe to say that the single-part wheel first appeared
in 2010. I would put the transition period around 2010-2011 then. 2009 would
be too early for the part to have appeared for

Set No: 7641 Name: City Corner
*
7641-1 (Inv) City Corner
463 Parts, 5 Minifigures, 2009
Sets: Town: City: Traffic

Cheers,
Randy

I own both set 7498 and 8404 and can confirm that both have bicycles with 2-piece
wheels. I bought and built these sets years ago, so I don't remember if the
bicycles came assembled.

Thanks for the info, guys. We'll separate the ones from 2009 on and keep
the versions as they are.
