Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 8640 Name: Polar Copter
*
8640-1 (Inv) Polar Copter
238 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 1986
Sets: Technic: Arctic Technic

* Add 2 Part 4085b Light Gray Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Clip Vertical - Type 2 (thin U clip) (Alternate)

Comments from Submitter:
Upon Checking this set as I have one on hand, I noted that this particular part was in mine, and not the 'official' BL inventory one.
I checked with BrickSet, and they have confirmed that the clip should be the thin type, however, I checked the instructions and Peeron and they show the type 1's. hence this request as for the others to be included as 'alternate'

Brickset gets its vintage/alternate inventories from Rebrickable, and it is not
clear how Rebrickable populated their inventories. Some of them, anyway, have
been copied straight from BL:

Set No: 190 Name: Farm Set
*
190-1 (Inv) Farm Set
526 Parts, 1975
Sets: Building Set with People: Farm

Peeron on the other hand, is another situation. Many of their inventories are
from excellent sources (and they actually list the source). But there is no log
with a record of changed filed directly with submitters, so in the case of this
set, it's hard to see whether the person who verified the set consciously
changed the variant to the "a" type. Also, there is evidence that some varaint
data was "cleaned up" after the fact (we do that here on BL, too) but without
a change log, it's hard to be sure what is what.

Since this set is on the edge of the line for this part (1986), I would prefer
a straight change. Another consideration is that even in 2015 some members are
having a hard time distinguishing between the types, even with an excellent large
image showing all 4 variants side by side. So confusion of this part at an earlier
date is to be expected.

Speaking of earlier dates, look at the date the inventory was approved (2003),
but 67 lots were added in 2005 (i.e. the whole inventory). Something fishy is
going on here, and it really makes one wonder what the inventory was like for
the previous 2 years. And then the change in 2006 with the Technic pins is another
issue.

Hi Russell,

I'm surprised as to that you have actually changed the clip totally when
I can see from my instructions, they are supposed to be the Type 1, and yet when
I looked on Brickset they are the Type 2, along with the ones in my set.

This is why I requested the alternate, as like you said, it was on the edge of
the line for the part (type 1).

I think the issue in regard the pins is that the original submitter probably
didn't realise that there were 2 different types...

Wasn't it changed some time ago, the ability to reserve a set for inventorying
purposes to a limit of 3 days before it was re-set?.

I'm sure I can remember several sets being reserved for approx 4 months before
being submitted?

Hi Russell,

I'm surprised as to that you have actually changed the clip totally when
I can see from my instructions, they are supposed to be the Type 1, and yet when
I looked on Brickset they are the Type 2, along with the ones in my set.

Instructions are not reliable in determining variants. Even if they did decide
to make a difference in the drawing, instructions were typically 1 to 2 years
behind the actual contents of the set.

This is why I requested the alternate, as like you said, it was on the edge of
the line for the part (type 1).

It's the parts on the edge of the timeline that we must be absolutely sure
about. We routinely change part variants where they are clear outliers within
an accepted and proven range of data. But I've seen too often people getting
the wrong notion about when parts were released, etc, based on things like instructions,
listings for sale, or reading the BL data in the wrong way. Later on, if it is
discovered that the timeline was different, all of these inventories have to
be changed.

To allow the "a" type to remain as an alternate means you are sure the alternate
actually occured in a set, and at this point (even though it is likely) we don't
know.

I think the issue in regard the pins is that the original submitter probably
didn't realise that there were 2 different types...

There were 2 different pins in the catalog since 2002, and the one type was added
by the submitter in 2005. It probably was the case that the submitter didn't
realize there were two types. But the same thing could have happened with the
4085, and my point is that the images (and maybe even the Item Names) were different
back then, so it's really hard to be sure about variants that old. Do some
research on this submitter and this particular part and you'll get a clearer
picture of what's happening.

Wasn't it changed some time ago, the ability to reserve a set for inventorying
purposes to a limit of 3 days before it was re-set?.

That's a reserve window, and as far as I know, this is never recorded anywhere
after the inventory is approved. If a set appears to be reserved for longer than
3 days, it means the submitter has reserved it multiple times.

I'm sure I can remember several sets being reserved for approx 4 months before
being submitted?

Inventories can be pending for an indefinite amount of time, but the date on
an approved inventory is the date that it was approved, not the date it was submitted,
despite what the phrase "xxxx inventoried this Set on Jan 3, 2012" might seem
to mean.
