Maybe it's just me but there are a few features I would like to see added/changed
on Wanted Lists. I am not a big fan of making suggestions for problems that
could be considered small "inconveniences." I would rather have BrickLink work
on more complex issues. Sometimes there are workarounds I don't know about
and maybe someone has an easy solution here but I find I spend way too much time
organizing my wanted list after placing an order. There are some features that
could really make it easier.

To give you an idea of why I am suggesting this let me walk you through how I
organize my wanted lists. If you want to skip right to the suggestions just
go down to the bold text below.

When I set up my wanted lists I generally make a new list for each major project
I am working on. I also have 1 wanted list for sets and 1 for all the pieces
on projects where I am just missing a few pieces. On every item though I place
a remark that says what project the item is for. As an example I am working on
BrickLinking a Grand Carrousel and on all of those pieces I put "GC" in the remark
section.

After placing an order in a store the first thing I do is pull up the “items
in order on wanted list” page and also the order detail page. This is where
I spend all my time because I now have to go through these pages line by line
THREE times (at least most of the time it is 3 times, sometimes less):

1st time through - I mark which lots I bought that completed ALL the pieces
in that lot on my wanted list and then MOVE them to my "On Order" wanted list.
So if I had 20 pieces in 1 lot on my wanted list and bought all 20 from that
store I would mark the "move" checkbox on the wanted list and move them to "On
Order." For those that I didn't buy all the parts in the lot it gets more
complicated. For those I have to check the box on the order page to remind myself
to come back to those the 2nd time through.

2nd time through - I now have to go back through the list again and mark
all of those items where the whole lot wasn’t bought at once, and COPY them to
my on order wanted list. So if I bought 12 of the 20 items in one lot I still
need 8 to be in the original wanted list and 12 to be in the on order wanted
list. However, just copying isn't enough, because now it says I have 20
pieces on my wanted list and 20 pieces on order which we know isn’t true.

3rd time through – Once again I have to go through the lists and now change
the numbers on the copied lots to reflect what was actually purchased and what
still remains. Using the same example above, I now need to change the lot on
my wanted list to show I need 8 and my on order list to show I have 8 coming.

On top of all of this there are multiple situations that make this even more
difficult and easy to mess up:

-Sometimes I have already bought some items from a lot and I have to change the
numbers on each wanted list. Say I had bought 12 of the 20 items from one lot
and then I buy 5 more from another store. When going through I now have to pay
attention to this and change the 12 to 17 and the 8 to 3.

-What about when the same part is on multiple wanted lists? Well say I had 20
of an item on wanted list A and 13 of that item on wanted list B and bought 30
from a store because that's all they have; well now when I go through the
lists I have to copy one of the lots over to the on order wanted list (can’t
do both because, you can’t have the same lot on a wanted list twice). From there
I now have to change the quantity to reflect how many I have purchased, but I
also have to change the remark to reflect that 20 go with Wanted List A and 13
go with Wanted List B. If I don’t do this I won’t have any idea where these
pieces go when I get them.

-Also it gets more complicated with only a certain number of items fitting on
a wanted list page at a time. I believe the limit is 50. When copying and moving
lots between wanted lists this gets very confusing and easy to lose track of
lots.

I have spent hours organizing wanted lists. Depending on the order size, this
can be a simple process or a very complex one. But I think that the time
spent here warrants some modification to the way wanted lists work. I explain
all of this simply to show you the complexity associated with keeping an organized
wanted list when working on multiple projects at the same time. Like I said before,
maybe there is an easy workaround and I would love to know it if there is but
if there isn’t there are a few changes I would love to see implemented that could
greatly simplify this process.

I am not sure what the easiest solution would be but these are some suggestions
I think would work help greatly:

- Make it so you can add a lot onto a wanted list that already has that lot.
Right now you get an error when you try to do that but if you could do it anyways
and have the option of consolidating the lots / remarks that would be great AND/OR
just allow a lot to be on a wanted list more than once. This way I can have
two of the same lot with different remarks because they go to different projects.
- Make wanted lists capable of showing more than 50 items at once. If an orders
page can contain all lots I think that a wanted list should be capable of it
as well.
-Create some move/copy function that can split the lot. I have 10 items on Wanted
List A and I want to move 6 of them to Wanted List B and keep 4 on Wanted List
A.
-Separate the Move function and the Copy function. This would
at the very least allow steps 1 and 2 to be combined.
-Update the "Show Items In Order on Wanted List" to include the quantity instead
of just the lot. That way it could actually do much of what I am explaining
already. This one would probably require a large change to though. Wishful
thinking here.

Maybe not all of these suggestions are necessary, I am just trying to give some
ideas.

Thanks to anybody that made it through that rambling mess, I guess that's
what I feel Wanted Lists are A Mess.

Thanks,
Pete

If you use BrickStock and add multiple instances of the same part to the same

is very possible and should be an easy fix/improvement from a programming
standpoint.

I admit I did not quite make it to the end. But I feel what you are saying. I
have made it easier by downloading the order to BrickStock and adding any comments/remarks
there and then either deleting or adjusting the quantity.*

To me the biggest weakness of the 'items on WL in order' screen is that
it does not show the qty ordered. The addition of that # would make it much faster
and more useful.

Pulling purchased items/lots completely off BL in and into BS is better for me
as they no longer show up in the WL searches and in store query. And are easy
to add back to the WL if they are missing or sub-par quality.

Andy

*In the 'old days' there was a check box to 'exclude from searches'
which was great for purchased items - BUT confused many users as there were regular
questions like 'nothing shows up on my WL searches even though I have many
items on the list' nearly every time the user marked exclude(!) without knowing
what it did (WHAT!) then were confused.

I've considered doing this and I can't check right now but I believe
when you download an order into Brickstock it downloads the order information
and not the wanted list information attached tot hat order. Meaning any remarks
I had attached to my wanted list items would not be attached to the Brickstock
file and I would have to add them to every single piece.

So maybe an easy fix would be to include MY REMARKS in an order?

I have my wanted lists set up with the Show Multiple Wanted Selection Lists
as Multiple Options in Stores and My Wanted Items By Shop
checked so when
I search for Show All Items this store has on my Wanted List I just uncheck
that box and it eliminates all those items.

You are correct it is the order information - BUT - you can easily add the remarks/comments
information by selecting multiple items (either shift or ctrl) and right click
set remarks and set many at one time. If you already have one with a remark -
it will suggest or autofill that remark so it is fast.

So that's a great idea and a nice fix for when an order has 1 project represented.
Unfortunately, if I have an order that has maybe 5 different projects represented
at the same time this gets tough. I would have to check each piece to see which
project it goes with and manually add each one. At least from what I think you
are saying this is what I would have to do.

Also if I ordered 30 pieces in one lot and that lot is represented in 3 projects
I would have to split this lot into 3 and then change the quantities and remarks
of each one. Not much different then what I am doing now.

Just had an idea. You could place the order in batches maybe. One batch for each
wanted list? Maybe an issue with some minimum orders. Just a thought.

Yes - only exception being that nearly everything works fast in BS - ctrl+c ctrl+v
and choose consolidate or not (would nice to set the default to not consolidate
somewhere).
In general BS is much faster than watching and waiting for page reloads.

I think we both agree these are really work arounds and not an elegant solution.
There is opportunity for improvements to make the process faster and easier.

Since buyers don't get the sellers remarks - Why not an option to have wanted
list remarks added to order items? Could be done on the 'items on WL in order'
screen.

I've actually thought about this before but more for asking the seller to
pack it in the corresponding batches so I wouldn't have to sort the pieces
into their projects once receiving them. But I feel like that is just putting
my work on the seller unnecessarily and wouldn't be fair.

Also, I don't think you can see "Items in Order on Want list" by batch?
Not sure about this though.

Very true everything is faster and who can we talk to about adding this feature?
I have been wanting that feature for a while now.

Ya this is kind of what I was hoping for with one of my suggestions. IF the
remark is attached to the order, it could shave down close to half the work here.

I know I am a novice compared to you, but wanted to share my methodology in case
it helps someone out there.

I have 2 places I use for info:

1. Bricklink want lists broken out by project
2. Brickstore which I use to show my total project inventory with a project identifier
in the remarks field. (I know I should transfer to Brickstock but haven't
taken the plunge yet)

When I get an order in, first I check it in to make sure all pieces are there.
Then I can work off the paper invoice for the next steps.

- I open both BL Want list edit screen and Brickstore inventory screen open.

- I take Piece A and adjust my BL Want List to show the remaining need after
receiving the ordered amount or delete it.

- Then add Piece A to my Brickstore inventory with the corresponding project
identifier in the remark field (easily viewable in the Wanted List)

Repeat process for Piece B....

So a 2 step process gets me an accurate updated batch of Wanted lists and an
inventory by project of the pieces I have.

I hope this is helpful to someone but I love your suggestions as well Pete. Just
not sure they'll ever be able to happen at this rate.

I am not sure what the easiest solution would be but these are some suggestions

Thanks,
Pete

Jason

Hey Jason,

Thanks for the tips. I actually use Brickstock in my method as well, I just
conveniently left that part out because BrickLink has nothing to do with that.
The thing that probably wouldn't work for me with your method is that I like
to move my parts to an "On Order" wanted list immediately after ordering them.
There are a few reasons for this:

- That way I can continue to buy parts without those items being on the wanted
lists I still need parts from
- When an order comes if it is missing a part (which is fairly often) I can easily
move that part back to my wanted list.

Now your idea is actually pretty awesome. I could just delete the items from
my wanted list and put them in Brickstock with a remark of which project it belongs
to (replacing my "On Order" list in Brickstock. Unfortunately, when I place
an order, more often then not there are tons of pieces and lots (just ask Scooter's
Bricks) and I still would have to go through each lot individually when placing
them in brickstock, matching the parts to each project and then I would have
to go into Brickstock and find each part to match it to the correct project once
it comes in.

Hi Pete,
would you also like to see this wanted list feature to be implemented?

That's pretty much exactly what I am asking for and apparently I already
voted yes for it! I think the quantity should still be changed manually as well
but also give an option for it to be decreased automatically if people like to
do that. Or, wishful thinking here again, even have an automatic option to move
them to a different wanted list ("On Order") for example.
