I feel that if I search for "curved 1x4" or "curved 1 x 4" then 6191 Brick, Modified
1 x 4 x 1 1/3 No Studs, Curved Top should show up in the search results. it
does if you search "curved 1 x 4 x 1".

Also, if I search for 3747, I should be able to see 3747a and 3747b. instead
I get the set 3747-1 Locomotive Gray Bricks. This is maddening when I see a
part number under a piece and type it in only to discover that there's an
a or b.

You can if you search 3747*.

But you're right, this is quite obscure and it would be helpful if you could
find them without having to know that little trick.

And if BL was consistent in the use of metacharacters in search fields.

searching my store's inventory with the "Remarks" "any part of field", "Keyword"

min*

returns nothing found.

But if I use

min

... I get Minifig, Minfig, minifig, undetermined etc ...

Hopefully BL 2 or BL II mark IV will be consistent
