I would like to add that electric train motor 12V modern type III with 3 slotted
contact holes no. bb12vc cannot be found in set 7740 because it started to appear
in the late 80s.

Morris:

This is right:
Early versions of 7740: bb12va (2 round contact holes) (1980-1982)
Later versions of 7740: bb12vb (3 round contact holes) (1983-1984)

bb12vc was never produced in 7740, I don't know about 7745 tho... But I think
it only was in a service packs at the end of the 80s (+-1989 till 1993)

Hope this helps

Just an update on these requests. We're a little behind at the moment while
dealing with some larger issues...

  Comments from Submitter:
1) Motor bb12va (first era) appears in the early production run, while motor bb12vb (second era) appears in the late production run.

Is there a reason why the variant motors have not been added to inventories?
[p=bb12va]
[p=bb12vb]
[p=bb12vc]
Does this have something to do with the compatiblity of "middle prong" electrical
components? The only one listed in an inventory is listed singly in a parts pack.

  2) 3839a (released until 1983) appears in the early production run, while 3839b appears in the late production run.
3) 3040a (released until 1981) appears in the early production run, while 3040 appears in the late production run.
4) 08010ac01 (year released 1980-1981) appears in the early production run, while 08010bc01 appears in the late production run.

For these other three, is it just coincidence that the production years you have
given match the BrickLink years exactly? Just a warning about BL dates in the
catalog - they are usually correct, but at times they may be very wrong. As a
general rule, we should add variants only based on original sources.

Regarding the 12V light brick,

Part No: 08010ac01 Name: Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with 2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens
*
08010ac01 Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with 2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens
Parts: Electric, Light & Sound
...it is clear that this part was engineered for the 1980's trains, so obviously
the first variant was in this set. But regarding the other parts:

Part No: 3839a Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Handles - Round Ends, Mid Attachment
*
3839a Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Handles - Round Ends, Mid Attachment
Parts: Plate, Modified

Part No: 3040a  Name: Slope 45 2 x 1 without Bottom Tube
*
3040a Slope 45 2 x 1 without Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope
...you are likely correct, but the issue will need some study.

Now regarding whether a part should be an alternate or regular, officially the
part in the Regular Items section is supposed to be the most common. But in the
absence of any hard data as to which is more common, there are two other commonly
accepted approaches:

1) the early variant is always "Regular", the later variant is "Alternate".

2) an artificial timeline is used to determine the official release year of the
new variant, and from that year on, the older part is added as the "Alternate".
In the years leading up, the rule would be as in 1) above.

Hi Russell,
don't worry no problem!

[p=bb12vc]

Sincerely I don't know why the variant motors haven't been added to the
1980s 12V trains inventories yet, but I think that if we do this action several
changes have to be done, i.e. to upload them with the idea that:
1) motor bb12va appears in sets from 1980 to 1982
2) motor bb12vb appears in sets from 1983 to 1989
3) motor bb12va appears in some production runs (of 7745, 7735 and 7865) at the
end of the 80s (+-1989) and in a Service pack until 1993.
I am quite sure about 1) and 2) but I cannot confirm 3).

  Does this have something to do with the compatiblity of "middle prong" electrical
components? The only one listed in an inventory is listed singly in a parts pack.

I think that the only problem of compatibility is to connect motor bb12va to
the 2-prong connectors: you can't do it!

  2) 3839a (released until 1983) appears in the early production run, while 3839b appears in the late production run.
3) 3040a (released until 1981) appears in the early production run, while 3040 appears in the late production run.

I gave the production years found on BL; thanks for your notice, I will be careful!

  Regarding the 12V light brick,

Part No: 08010ac01 Name: Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with 2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens

*
3040a Slope 45 2 x 1 without Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope
...you are likely correct, but the issue will need some study.

As far as 3839a and 3040a are concerned I agree with you, the issue need more
study, but I think that it is in accordance with what happens about the same
bricks for the set 722-1 and 733-1 (both producted in the same period).

Now regarding whether a part should be an alternate or regular, officially the

Morris: I agree and confirm this. You have to use the cables with connector 765c01

I gave the production years found on BL; thanks for your notice, I will be careful!

  Regarding the 12V light brick,

Part No: 08010ac01 Name: Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with 2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens

- Morris: The first sets that were released (1980 - 1982) were with lightbrick
08010ac01 and connectors: 765c01. Later, the lightbrick got replaced with 08010bc01
because Lego experienced that they were broken to fast. The 08010bc01 is a whole
other system!!

I can't wait to see your next comparison about those light brick on YT!!!

As far as 3839a and 3040a are concerned I agree with you, the issue need more
study, but I think that it is in accordance with what happens about the same
bricks for the set 722-1 and 733-1 (both producted in the same period).

Now regarding whether a part should be an alternate or regular, officially the
part in the Regular Items section is supposed to be the most common. But in the
absence of any hard data as to which is more common, there are two other commonly
accepted approaches:

1) the early variant is always "Regular", the later variant is "Alternate".

2) an artificial timeline is used to determine the official release year of the
new variant, and from that year on, the older part is added as the "Alternate".
In the years leading up, the rule would be as in 1) above.

Russell

I did my change request referring to the approach 1) above.

Just an update on these requests. We're a little behind at the moment while
dealing with some larger issues...

Hi Russell,
don't worry no problem!

  Comments from Submitter:
1) Motor bb12va (first era) appears in the early production run, while motor bb12vb (second era) appears in the late production run.

Is there a reason why the variant motors have not been added to inventories?
[p=bb12va]
[p=bb12vb]
[p=bb12vc]

I think you mean 3-prong connectors here. But that is the point - the newer connectors
won't fit with the older components. For now, though, we have a cord in the
inventory that will fit all types.
