Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 7740 Name: Inter-City Passenger Train
*
7740-1 (Inv) Inter-City Passenger Train
746 Parts, 10 Minifigures, 1980
Sets: Train: 12V

* Delete 1 Part 2731a Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector (Alternate) (match ID 1)

Comments from Submitter:
The conducting rail 2731a started to appear in 1985, while the production of 7740 stopped in 1984, so it could not be included in 7740. Please remove it from the inventory, experts of 12V trains will confirm it.

Yes! As soon as I can I will upload an image! At the moment I've got only
this one: if you enlarge it you will see the number 191986.

yes

but then also remove for the 7730+7725+7727 as regular part

in 1985 we had 4 new trainsets 7715+7722+7735+7745, no longer old trainsets available

Hi elias3!
I think you are right, in my opinion also the other inventories have to be changed,
but I don't own those sets, so I would like someone else to confirm this
change.

I've got a question for you as far as the 7740 is concerned: in your opinion
was the "3241c Conducting Rail Curved interference-free" an alternate part or
an extra part? In the 7740 that I own from my childhood there are 16 "3241 Conducting
Rail Curved" + 1 "3241c Conducting Rail Curved interference-free", so I'm
tempted to consider the last one as an extra part to be included in mid-late
production of the set...

This part was added to this set (and the 3 other sets Stefaan mentioned) back
in June of 2008. My questions are: 1) Did the production runs of all of these
sets end in 1984?, and 2) How do we know that this part was not introduced until
1985?

I would like to hear from some other train enthusiasts if possible before taking
action on this request. Thanks.

Hi Russel,

thank you for your contribution!
1) According to the catalogues of those years 7730 was produced between 1980
and 1982, 7725 was produced between 1981 and 1984, 7727 was produced between
1983 and 1984. I think everyone can confirm it.
2) I cannot confirm that and I would also like to hear other's opinion...
but in another post here:

http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=870871

they discuss about the same part 2731a. I'm going to ask them to chime in.
I hope I was of help,

Morris

Hi,

I confirm, as owner of a 7740 in MINT condition, I can say that The conducting
rail 2731a was only in a Service Pack of 1991 (source brasletty). The curved
rails that were in this set were the ones 'with' connection holes. With
the transformer (7864) there was a cable to connect it.

Hi,

thanks for your help!
You are refering to the Service Pack 5063, but it came out in 1987, as the 1987
Service Pack Catalogue confirms.
Regards,

This has been a challenging request to handle because we are so far removed from
the time of these old trains, and also because there are quite a few holes in
the BrickLink database concerning the parts.

One of these holes is the Known Colors list of this piece:

Part No: 3241b Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved without Cable Connection Holes
*
3241b Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved without Cable Connection Holes
Parts: Train, Track
Clearly the part also came in Light Gray, and where else would it have been used
except in the train sets of the early eighties:

Set No: 7730 Name: Electric Goods Train
*
7730-1 (Inv) Electric Goods Train
511 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1980
Sets: Train: 12V

Set No: 7740 Name: Inter-City Passenger Train
*
7740-1 (Inv) Inter-City Passenger Train
746 Parts, 10 Minifigures, 1980
Sets: Train: 12V

Set No: 7855 Name: 8 Curved Electric Rails Gray 12v
*
7855-1 (Inv) 8 Curved Electric Rails Gray 12v
8 Parts, 1980
Sets: Train: Supplemental: 12V

Set No: 7725 Name: Electric Passenger Train
*
7725-1 (Inv) Electric Passenger Train
483 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 1981
Sets: Train: 12V

Set No: 7727 Name: Freight Steam Train
*
7727-1 (Inv) Freight Steam Train
551 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1983
Sets: Train: 12V

So the question arises, how did the power get to the rails? Did sets come with
at least one rail with connection holes?

The 1980 train catalog shows that (at least at first) power connections were
only made on straight rails, which may be a carryover from the old blue system
with a contact block under the rails:

Part No: 2913c01 Name: Electric, Train Track Contact Base with Wire (97cm) with Blue Electric, Connector, 2-Way Male Rounded Wide Long with Hollow Pins (2913 / bb0093ac01)
*
2913c01 (Inv) Electric, Train Track Contact Base with Wire (97cm) with Blue Electric, Connector, 2-Way Male Rounded Wide Long with Hollow Pins (2913 / bb0093ac01)
Parts: Electric, Wire & Connector
Then at some point things switched to using curved rails for power supply, maybe
when Lego came out with the interference suppression power connection:

Part No: 3241c Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved, interference-free
*
3241c Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved, interference-free
Parts: Train, Track
After this, there came an "all in one" unit, doubtless due to connection problems:

Part No: 2731a Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
*
2731a Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
Parts: Train, Track
And then there was its successor:

Part No: 2731b Name: Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Long Connector
*
2731b Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Long Connector
Parts: Train, Track
...although this could have been a short-termed predecessor for all I can see.

Anyhow, there is the slightest chance that the part just removed from the inventory
was in this set. But it is very slim indeed, based on the experiences I have
been able to gather so far from a number of knowledgeable people. But the large
issue in my mind is how these other parts fit into the picture.

It just seems a little odd that TLG would introduce the supression rail in 1980,
when they had never had such a thing in many years of 12V trains before. I have
a feeling that the new thing in 1980 were the separated connector ends, and when
this gave some problems, then an improvement was made later.

There is a lot of conjecture in these thoughts, which is one of the reasons they
took so long to form. Any comments further enlightening the situation would be
welcome, of course, as well as future change requests to get more of these holes
filled and problems solved.

Thanks for your patience.

Russell
