Items with prices far outside the norm are a common topic here in the forums.
These are commonly caused by mistakes, and to help sellers when they make these
mistakes, I would like to suggest that the system automatically notify them of
the possibility of such errors.

This should work for prices both above and below the "norm". How to determine
the "norm" I would leave up to BrickLink, but I will suggest that it significantly
outside of the norm to trigger a notice.

I bring this up here, becaue I just received such a notice for a listing I did
on Amazon. I will include the notice below. This notice allowed me to avoid
having an item sit unsold forever because I priced a $19.99 item at $99.99.

You will see that the notice does not say that I can not list for this price,
just that it is outside the norm and that I should look at it. Options for correcting
the issue are to reprice the item OR tell them that the price is correct as it
is.

Troy

Dear Seller,

We are contacting you because we have detected potential pricing errors in your
Amazon.com product listings. To avoid a potentially negative customer experience
caused by mispriced items, we have deactivated these listings.

These deactivated listings are marked in Manage Inventory with a Status of "Inactive
(Pricing Error)".

To reactivate your listings, click on “Fix Price Alerts” and then on “Potential
Pricing Error” on the left menu to:

- update your offer price, or
- confirm your offer price by setting “Your minimum price” and “Your maximum
price” in the specified columns so that your offer price is within the minimum
and maximum price range. We will alert you in the future if your price falls
outside your price range. If you do not use the minimum and maximum price settings,
our systems will continue to use internal data to help detect potential pricing
errors.

If you have a Professional selling account, you can also use the Inventory Loader
file or the Price & Quantity file to update your prices as well as your minimum
and maximum prices. For more information, search in Seller Central Help for the
terms "Unblocking Your Listings", "Inventory Loader", and "Price and Quantity".

If you have questions or need assistance, log in to your Seller Central account
and click the "Contact Seller Support" link at the bottom of the page. For feedback
about this pricing error program, please send an e-mail to listing-error-feedback@amazon.com.

Thank you for selling on Amazon,

Your Amazon Services Team

Good idea.

I also suggest that other buyers/sellers, when they notice such a thing, kindly
send a message to the seller.

Whenever I am listing pieces, and I notice one of these, I always message the
seller.
Almost 100% of the time, it is a mistake, and they are very thankful that I took
the time to let them know.

I do this as well, it helps keep the price guide more accurate, and normally
results in a thank you note from the seller.
I do usually check through a couple of their other similar items to make sure
that that listing deviates from their norm.

As a seller I appreciate when people point out anything I've listed that
doesn't jive with the rest of my inventory or prices.
A couple of examples would be one lot that I have somehow set the bulk to like
50. I had a buyer mention that they really needed a couple, but didn't want
to buy 50. I very rarely price things with a bulk buy. If the buyer hadn't
let me know, those pieces might have sat forever.
Another example would be parts that I price when they are brand new parts
or in new colors. The prices on these can change dramatically in a short time.
I like to price with the future market in mind, but there was one lot I found
recently where I was WAY high. I would have welcomed a note on this from someone
interested in buying, but not wanting to pay so far above the average.
It sounds like, from the letter Troy received from Amazon, that if the latter
example were to happen, an older active listing were suddenly to fall way out
of the norm, it would prompt the same action.
I'm all for this suggestion. Nothing like sitting on pieces that are never
going to sell.

I like the idea of an alert, or maybe a small warning before you hit "submit"
when listing the item.

I don't appreciate them automatically deactivating the listing, though -
if I miss the message, then it could be sitting unsold because I never activated
it, which is just creating a new problem.

Perhaps the message could raise a flag on your BL home screen, so it can't
be missed. An email of "You really underpriced this" followed by "and now it
sold..." is more frustrating then deactivating the listing, I think.

How about just a one-button question just before listing: "Did you mean to price
this item much lower/higher than the average?"

To be clear, there was a notice on the main seller screen that there was a message
to be read. It is hard to miss.

Also, deactivated items sort to the top of your inventory screen, so I noticed
it even before I noticed the message, while I was working on inventory.

Not sure why it doesn't catch it as I was listing. Probably doesn't
check the price until I hit submit.

I don't see the problem with this, and it could be fairly simple to implement
(seeing as how it wouldn't automatically do anything except notify the seller).

I'd suggest something along the lines of being outside two or three standard
deviations of the mean price listed.

I agree. Two or three standard deviations is a good threshold. It could come
up as a message and a "confirm listing" button when you upload. For a while
I was cruising the daily new listings, sorted by price. I noticed a couple of
pricing errors that were simply missing decimal points -- $25.00 instead
of $0.25 kind of thing. The sellers always appreciated a message about it.

Thank you for selling on Amazon,

Fascinating. So Amazon has a dynamic price window that they think everyone should
stay within ? If memory serves me correctly, Amazon scans many sites on the web
to collect data to determine this. I had always assumed it was being used for
items offered by Amazon, but not the 3rd party seller marketplace. I wonder if
they're scanning BL.
