| I don't know if this will ever happen but I would love to see that chat rooms
return. They really helped me out when I was new and other as well. It was
also nice to make friends and talk Lego with others to get ideas and tips on
projects. I would hope that admin and the new owner of BL may see that chat
was an addition to the site. It was not the cause of BL 1.0's downfall so
it really makes no sence to take it out

Voted "yes" for chatrooms. I asked about that some time ago because i did not
see the chat available and atleast someone told, that there had been some bugs
or difficulties with chat when it still was available. If someone would know
how to make chat working again, would be nice
Is there any amount of users known that would have effect on chat, in a way,
that would make it slower to use, for example hundreds or thousands or more chatting
at the same time?
What if in BrickLink there were chatrooms for more than just 1, for example 1
chatroom only Lego-chat, 1 for example for things in life in general and so on.
So people could choose which chatroom to go to at different times.

Already exists, you could create rooms.

I would really appreciate it if those that request chat could substantiate how
much they actually used the service.
As evidenced by my data, I am not really missing it.

So of us were actually quite fond of Chat and we took great advantage of it being
available

How confident are you of this last statement? I don't know programming.
I thought I recall it being listed as a specific liability that was exploited
by a hacker.

Ever since it has been gone, there are periodic requests for the return of Chat.
Each one looks about the same. "I liked it" "I found it useful" and such.
That has never garnered enough merit for the service restoration to be completed.
So rather than singing the same old song, I am suggesting the request might have
more merit if people can give a greater evidence of the value it brought.
Of greater value is proving that it impacted BrickLink's bottom line. But
that is more difficult. An easy middle ground is giving evidence of the hours
spent on this site using the service. Users can just as easily spend hours on
other sites, but the potential for BrickLink to profit from them is diminished.

i was over 11000 minutes in chat, i quit coming here and buying here because
there's no chat. i would buy stuff from people in chat quite a bit when the
chatroom existed. this is one reason i don't come around more, and i know
alot of toy collectors/lego collectors that will not be on a forum or site
if it doesnt have chat to at least mingle with other like minded folks.

| Hi,
I wanted to confirm that the chat feature was disabled because it was one of
the ways hackers were able to get into the site a while back. Because of the
serious security concerns, there are currently no plans to return the chat feature
on the current BL website. I've seen this request come up a number of times,
and the feedback has been forwarded on to the BL Team. I agree that there are
many benefits to offering chat, and I'm hopeful that it will be available
again in the future.
Thanks

I don't know that much about web programming, but I don't really get
that. If you build it in a separate compartment it shouldn't pose a threat,
right? Like, I could right here in this post link to an external chat page and
that would not put BL in danger. Similarly, I can imagine BL can link to a to-some-degree
external page with Bricklink style layout and dub it "the Bricklink chat".
What constitutes "the Bricklink chat" doesn't depend on the technicalities,
it only depends on what we choose to call "the Bricklink chat". It's
just a label and a meeting spot.

The chat definitely was a security risk. If you had some coding experience you
could post under someone else's name during live chat. I've seen it
done, and I've had it explained to me, and saw it first hand a few times
(all in good faith just for fun, just showing off). But stating it was not a
security risk is not true, if someone can post / pose as another member that
is certainly a risk.

That is a loophole that should have been closed, but that is no reason to completely
remove chat and it doesn't mean chat itself was a security risk. You could
have the same loophole with any of the login forms if they were not configured
properly.
We would never tolerate a loophole like that now, anyway. But most likely, for
chat to be reinstated we would need to rewrite the code entirely, so there shouldn't
be any such issues moving forward.

I don’t know how Dan did it at the time but using a known, open, and tested protocole
instead or reinventing the square wheel would help too
(I guess there was a connection to BL’s database, if only for the login/passwords
but maybe more as it also recorded the time passed there, and that implies home-made
stuff.)

There are many connections with other parts of the site, such as banning, daily
chat log, time in chat for each account, log in / log out, plus moderator privileges.

Yes, all that too.
What I meant is that 20 years ago, it was almost an obligation to make everything
yourself because the existing solutions were not up to be integrated. Nowadays,
there are more solutions and they are easier to integrate (or not so costly).
(Though there’s still some “gasworks” out there.)

| It's an old suggestion, so I'm not sure how many people are seeing the
original message now or bothering to click the relevant link to see it and vote.
I know I'd like to see the chat rooms return. Not sure what it will take
for it to materialize, however.
