This post suggesting changes to the present BrickLink checkout system

http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=831606

has inspired much discussion on the merits of the checkout system on a competing
website.

Actively promoting a competitor website is in violation of rule 6 of the Forum
Discussion Rules.

With more than 80 posts discussing the topic, what needs to be said (and more)
has already been said.

I suggest locking the thread and cancel the posts promoting the competition.

Stirring the pot somewhat.
Did you read that thread?
There's no 'promoting the competition' in that thread.

Of course I didn't read every word - that is not he way internet forums work.

Read what you want, comment what you want.

It works the best when you only read part of the post before commenting.

What this forum needs are 'TL/DR' summaries for those with limited time
(or interest).

There's no 'promoting the competition' in that thread.

I've always been led to believe when you 'cut' someone down, you
are doing so to 'build' yourself up. That's what my teachers said.

So anytime you say something bad about BL you are in fact, even unintentionally
promoting the competition!

But good for us we've had some kind words from the forum admins noting that
we're still upholding the intent of the forum rules. And - the intent -
that is what counts!

For the health of BrickLink, I hope BrickLink deals with things that made someone
mention (compare!) the competing site in the first place.

Competing site is capitalizing on BL weakness, so we should be thankful to the
ones who point out that weakness for us.

Hi Andy,

While I do feel the other thread has been bogged down in a lot of minutia and
semantic related disagreements, I don't feel it violates the intent of the
forum rule regarding promotion of a competitors website. What we want to avoid
is actively encouraging members to use a competitor site. While the statements
don't show BL in the best light, it certainly points to an area we need to
improve. In the end, a little competition can be good for business, as it often
encourages change and innovation.

Thanks

The suggestion was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

There have been past comments that the overlong 'super-threads' cover
the same ground over-and-over-and-over-and-over.
http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=831326

And previously some have noted that the the 'super-threads' can/maybe/do
drive buyers looking for help away.

So perhaps we should look at maximum forum posts in a 24 hour time period. Or
maximum number of posts in a thread.

Or we could just hand over control of Bricklink to Stalin, I'm sure that
would sort everything out...

And his birthday is not until Dec 18. We can't bring him into this.

But Svetlana Kuznetsova is having a birthday, perhaps she'll fill-in for
him.

That is why I recently suggested this:

Until we have vote up/down buttons we need to help each other out. Right!

I guess limiting the use of word "OPINION" to once per day would settle things
down quite nicely
