| Today I had a customer at my retail store ask me to source parts for a project
he designed in Lego Digital Designer. There are 3,742 pieces in 209 lots. I
am obviously not going to create a wanted list for this manually.
I figured i'd just import the parts list into BL and go from there, thinking
surely BL is setup to handle such things.
NOPE!
The only format BL is setup to import is BL XML files. The only formats that
LDD exports as are LXF and XLS. I am sure that there is some magic that can
be worked involving BrickStock, but I shouldn't need a third party program
to get this to work.
With people designing all sorts of things in LDD and LDRAW, BL should be able
to import these formats directly so that those people can source their parts
here. Why this wasn't a priority over the MOC Shop is beyond me. People
are going to be more willing o buy their own designs over someone elses.
So, my suggestion is that BL be able to import, at a minimum:
LEGO Digital Designer files
LDRAW files
Excel Spreadsheet parts lists.
For further incentive: This already works at BrickOwl. I was able to import
the LDD file directly, and BO provided me with an estimate of the cost. This
is all that was needed at this point, but I was able to go further and search
stores for the parts.
Would much prefer to buy here, but if my customer decides to proceed with the
project itlooks like i will be shopping at BO.

Yes, please! However it does mean BL needs database of ldraw parts, LDD parts,
so on.

As the original BL Catalog was stolen from...er...copied from LDRAW, most of
that information should already be in the catalog.
It looks like LDD uses the part/color numbers from the back of the instructions
books. BL has been adding those as cross references for some time now, so that
information should also be mostly there.

Another thing that BO has, that BrickLink should have!
And another customer goes to BO instead of BrickLink!
Come on development team, pull your fingers out...

| I suggested the same thing almost a year ago and it went unnoticed, 1 reply!!
But, looking at my old post, I could have phrased the tile better.
Anyways, yes, this is something that would great to have. BO already having it
is just more incentive for the development team here on Bricklink to come up
with something for BL 2.0.
Thanks for the suggestion Troy!

I voted yes on this some time ago, but I just wanted to reply to this as this
comes up a few times a week. I figure more exposure can't hurt. If this sort
of thing is asked for by a few people a week on BL forum, there must be 50-100x
if not more people wanting this, but never post in the forum to begin with. Sure
would like to know if BL developers are working on this feature or not. The workaround
is tedious, non-obvious and unnecessary.
Additionally, BL team could leverage on some needed and some nice subfeatures,
like part variant, color and quality condition substitution, and so on.

| I realise this is an old topic/suggestion, but I feel compelled to say that I
remember BLL announcing that they were creating a competitive program to LDD
that would be the best digital LEGO designer out there, and would have full exporting
options to BL. I don;t remember if this project was shelved or not.
