So far I have spent an hour trying to get a simple image of a Lego minifigure
uploaded to this site for use as an avatar. I have downloaded a program called
Adapter (for PC and Apples, I recommend this application despite the problems
I've had trying to get it to ensize the image in question for the sheer fact
that it is free and unsullied by hidden adwares, it's small, inexpensive
download size and it's attractive sleek and simple design: http://www.macroplant.com/adapter/download/pc/
), which although is a free as well as completely unadwared/unmalwared so far
non-bug-ridden application, it has no faq nor guide to help users with problems.
My problems thus are downgrading the image in question was not so much the problem...
getting the thing to be under 122 x 122 has been a trying test of patience and
perseverence, with still no equalled longitudal-latitudal outcome to an image
that remains for me stamped and sealed within it's current, carroted bounds.

All of this could be avoided by a) not having an avatar at all, b) by choosing
another avatar, or c) having a hassle-free software in-situ that automatically
resizes images users want to individualise themselves with for their avies to
the prescribed resolution and size.

I know you have these restrictions for a reason. Storing images is not cheap
and avatars come far down in the list of priorities when keeping a server up
and running is more important (and rightly so) but perhaps you could consider
either upping the volumes that avatars can be uploaded at so that it is easier
for users to get the images they want to use or are accustomed to using elsewhere
at the volumes that may be used on other forum sites, and/or, having software
that automatically downgrades and resizes images that users want as avatars
so they can get their avatars up and running faster.

(image: the guilty party and his jubilant carrot... just who is it leading, willy-nilly
around by the nose)

Install Gimp the next time. It's free, open source and cross-platform (Open,
Image-Scale Image, Export).

Attached rescaled image.
