It is difficult to find good info amongst the arguments nowadays. Perhaps there
should be a separate forum just for arguments...or limit those participants to
1,000 words per day???...give sellers a chance to market their wares, please.
I enjoy reading about sets and parts for sale.

I have an alternative. (half joking -- in advance) mods can stop (not lock)
specific people from continuing the discussion in a thread..
Of course they may just create a new one pointing to the old one.. but.
Sometimes you just have to walk away from conversations and they stop.

I think there is some validity in this idea, it is less severe than a ban but
sends a clear message that the individuals contribution is becoming unhelpful
whilst still giving others an opportunity to voice an opinion where locking the
whole thread would prevent that.

Wouldn't this make censorship easier and more prevalent? I know the mods
don't want to ban anyone willy nilly; and they may be subject to public criticism
for those bans. This, presumably, makes them hesitant and more careful when deciding
upon bans. But partial bans like this may make it TOO easy for the mods. AND
they would not have to explain themselves or be held accountable. Since no one
beyond the banned person and mods would know.
And what exactly would be the objective guidelines for thread banning? If it
is bad enough to thread ban a poster it is bad enough to forum ban them. Unless
we want lower standards for thread banning. Which, in turn, only means more censorship.
Lastly, will this sort of thread banning depend upon the popularity of a poster
or the topic? Regardless of who the poster may be, there are just some topics
that inevitably become contentious and unpopular.
No, what I really think should be done is that the mods should step in earlier
with public or private warnings for those who first cross the line. Because
if they let it slide, it often leads to what we have seen these past few days
- he said, she said, you did this, no I did not, etc., etc. And furthermore,
if I get a public or private warning from a moderator, I am much more likely
to reassess what I am doing than if it comes from another poster who is engaging
in a heated debate with me. Of course, the problem with this idea is that the
mods can't be everywhere all the time. I don't envy their job.

As with any business there is a method to complain, admin has the ability to
see who made the ban and take appropriate action if the power to ban was misused.
| And what exactly would be the objective guidelines for thread banning? If it
is bad enough to thread ban a poster it is bad enough to forum ban them. Unless

|
I dont interpret the idea to be about censorship. I will make up a hyperthetical
example where it could be used effectively. members A, B, C and D..
Member A starts a topic asking for advice on a contentious issue. B who is normally
a helpful individual takes exception to the content and starts trolling (for
lack of a better word) that specific thread resulting in that thread becoming
detracted, unhelpful to the OP and giving a poor perception of the forum, which
in the end will put C off if it continues. Presently we can lock the thread,
ban B completely or both. Locking the thread prevents C from posting helpful
comments and does not help A get the advice they want, banning B completely prevents
B from making a helpful contribution in a different thread an hour later started
by D where only B has the knowledge to help them. Single thread prevention against
B will enable C to contribute to that thread, B can still contribute to other
threads and D can get the assistance then rather than afew days later when B's
ban is served and they go back to previous posts.
The objective guidelines would obviously be something for bricklink to discuss
and consider if the idea were to ever be considered.
| Lastly, will this sort of thread banning depend upon the popularity of a poster
or the topic? Regardless of who the poster may be, there are just some topics
that inevitably become contentious and unpopular.
|
Ban decisions are based purely within the scope of the forum rules, both proactively
and in reaction to complaints submitted by other members.
| No, what I really think should be done is that the mods should step in earlier

|
To a point, I agree, and there are certainly levels where a quick warning is
the most appropriate method, but there are occasions as experience has proven
where a warning hasnt been enough and I personally believe a total ban would
be a bit harsh.
| Of course, the problem with this idea is that the
mods can't be everywhere all the time. I don't envy their job.
|
This is the case whatever tools are available to moderators in the process of
moderating.
The real question is whether people want moderators to have a black & white `policing/censorship`
role or one of moderation with multiple tools to ensure that discussion remains
within a moderate range with appropriate tools for use in a case by case basis.
I feel the idea coined humourously by Brett is a good idea as to A method with
which moderators can be more moderate in action and provides an option that would
genuinely sit somewhere between thread lock/cancellation and total ban without
the negative impacts on otherwise acceptable discussions that cancelling or locking
would have. Of course there will always be times when a full ban, cancellation
or locking will be more appropriate but it offers an option in addition. If anyone
has other ideas for tools that moderators could use effectively on bricklink
as an alternative or addition to existing tools I would be more than happy to
hear about them.

They already has powerful tools to do this. Ban and Cancel post/entire thread.
Problem is that those tools sometimes is too powerful for given event. They need
tools that's between mere warning and heavy hammers.

I don’t post on the forum much but do read it quite a bit, some of the recent
stuff on the forums is pretty tedious but it’s pretty simple to solve, just stop
reading it. I feel it becomes annoying when different topics/subjects are commandeered
by the same people peddling the same agenda and I often find myself thinking
that the less verbal majority could be turned away by the verbal minority meaning
the community loses valuable contributions.
Just my opinion of course, my suggestion re the banning discussion would be to
suspend people who infringe the rules for 24hrs and then just keep doubling the
suspension each time they ‘offend’.
