Hi, Not sure if this is a system glitch or not, A few months back I had a store
close while I was compiling items in it, I lost my complete shopping cart because
of this and was not able to recover the list. I had to go through all of my items
with the other stores to figure out what items were in this cart. If a seller
closes their store, there should be a warning that a buyer has items in their
cart and they should contact that buyer prior to store closing. Not sure if this
feature exists or not but it would be nice,
Jill

I had that happen as a seller, and it resulted in an irritated customer sending
me a not so polite message asking why I closed while he was actively filling
his cart. Obviously I wouldn't have closed if I knew he was in the process
of placing an order. All worked out, but I get your point.

Sorry Jill. I have to vote no on this. I think sellers should be able to close
their store at any time regardless of whether or not any buyers may have some
open shopping carts. Those carts can stay open for hours, and many do not result
in sales.

A better way to address your situation might be for a pop-up to appear for any
buyers who may be shopping when the seller closes their store. The pop-up could
say something like: "This store has just closed. Please complete your shopping
within the next 15 minutes. After that time, your cart will be cleared and you
will not be able to place an order while the store is closed."

It may exist if you look at that store, But the warning should be on all open
BL Pages/ orders so that it can be seen at all times WARNING STORE XYZ IS CLOSING
YOU HAVE X TIME
When dealing with 20-30 stores/orders at a time it would be very inconvenient
if you have to check the store status.

Yes a warning on either end would be a nice feature, I would have either checked
out or printed out the list of items in the cart so I don't lose them and
have to spend time trying to figure out what they were. I typically buy 10 to
15K items at a time and the stores that have many items in them and I have dealt
with b4 I check out and add-on later, Others that have store minimums I try to
shift item to them to meet min/sales.
I usually deal with 20-30 stores at a time then I try to consolidate if possible
to have fewest orders possible. Jill

I could care less whether the buyer closes their store and they should be allowed
to at any time, My issue is the cart should not be lost. The warning should pop-up
on any refreshed page whether it's with that store or not, and the cart should
be retrievable.
Just a suggestion to make life easier for the buyer. Jill

A warning already exists, you've missed it:

If a Seller Closes their Store while a Buyer is Shopping:
A buyer has 30 minutes to complete adding items to their shopping cart and checkout.
While a store is closed, a banner with the number of minutes left is displayed
to a buyer in the detail screen and shopping cart. Here is an example:

Wow! Eleven years here and I am still learning something new about this place.
I have never seen that notice before. Thanks for pointing it out.

Maybe BrickLink needs a popup banner for "Random Help Topic Of The Day"...

Indeed. New to me too. It's generally IMPOSSIBLE to know everything about

Never knew about this either! Very cool.

It would be very helpful to know if a shopper has items in their cart at my store.
I close probably once a month to either get caught up or just take a break. Every
time I close I cross my fingers I'm not closing the doors on an active shopper.
It's nice to know that if there is a shopper they will see the banner. I
try to wait until the counter shows it has been at least an hour since my shop
was visited before I close. It would be even more helpful if on the MyBL page
it shows if shoppers have items in their cart. Maybe a time stamp on that too.
X minutes since item was added type of thing.

I'll just sit back now and wait for someone to tell me this already exists

And if you don't see this banner because you haven't added any items
in this stores cart
in a while then what. I was only notified that the store was closed when I went
to checkout of that store, and my cart was lost. I emailed the seller and he
reopened but the cart was lost. Thus I had to go through 12-15K parts to figure
out what was missing.
I know better now, and this was the only time it ever happened to me, In a perfect
world
1 store would have all the items I am looking for. Jill

Hi Jill,
I agree this needs some sort of solution.
I have received the 30 minute notice of store closing before, but at that time
it was the only store I was looking at.
Like you, I've had multiple carts in progress before, and not gotten back
to one for some time. I've been lucky not to have any closed in that situation.

I'm not sure a pop-up about one store's closing while you are active
in another store would work if you have pop-ups disabled. I can't remember
ever seeing the new message notification while I've switched between store
windows either. So even if the Seller knew it was me keeping his store open
and sent me a message, I probably wouldn't see it in time.

There are times when I'm on call and have to drop what I'm doing and
may not get back to it for quite some time. My solution was to let the 5-10
stores I was working with know I needed to do multiple batches and ask if that
would be ok. Then I could shop for a few specific items in each store over a
short period of time, do a first batch for those items, and then go back for
other batches at a later time.

So the simple solution would be to let the cart remain until the buyer decides
to either make the purchase or delete it, and if they are not allowed to complete
the purchase because the store closed during the compilation of the cart, there
should be a option to still be able to view the cart and then save if for future

reference, Jill

This needs to be made optional for each seller. Sellers close their store for
a reason. To stop getting orders so they can catch up, or because they go on
vacation, get sick or have a family emergency. If they don't want any further
orders, I don't think they should be forced to accept orders from buyers
who leave their carts open and don't check out until hours or days later.

I rarely close my store. But when I do it is not for a minor reason. Something
serious is going on that makes it impossible for me to take on more orders. The
few times I had to close my store there also wasn't time for me to write
a closing message or send emails about order processing delays. Or I was in no
condition to do so, such as lying on a gurney in the ER after heart problems.
As frustrating as it might be for a buyer to lose their cart, I hope they can
also understand that there are situations in life where sellers sometimes just
need to be able to decline taking on more orders.

So what might be better here is for each seller to decide for themselves and
input how much time they want to give shoppers to finish shopping and checkout.
Right now the system decides that - 30 minutes. Let each seller input their own
time. Some may allow 6 hours or more, while some may allow only 10 minutes or
no additional time at all. It is their shop... let the seller decide.

Once again I think we are loosing focus on what I am saying and I agree with
what you are saying, as stated above the cart belongs to the buyer until they
decide to place a order, and if they are not allowed to complete the purchase
because the store closed during the compilation of the cart, there should be
a option to still be able to view the cart and then save if for future reference.
Just like when a buyer checks out and parts are no longer available because someone
else bought them, You have the ability to view the cart and then decide whether
to complete the purchase or not. The same type of notification should happen
but the goal is to not lose the cart. Jill

This would be okay if the Seller is just closing the store to stop new orders.
I can see a couple of possible problems if it's for making changes to terms
or prices.
We all know how hard it is to get people to read Terms to begin with, but what
if a Buyer had read the terms before saving a cart. Do you think they would
go back and read the terms again once the store reopened and they used a saved
cart? Would this fall under the "fees not clearly stated" reason for canceling
an order?
Which prices would be used, the ones from the saved cart or the new ones? How
many Buyers would even check the prices to see if they'd changed?

I want to say again I think the situation needs a solution and it's a good
suggestion. I'm just playing Devil's Advocate.

Maybe I am misunderstood when I say not lose the cart, I just need the ability
of seeing what's in the cart so I can buy those items later whether it's
from that seller or not, I just print it out so that I know these items have
not been ordered yet, CURRENTLY IF YOU GO TO COMPLETE THE CHECKOUT AND THE STORE
IS CLOSED AND THE 30 MINUTES HAS ELAPSED THE CART IS LOST. I just print out the
cart for future reference, Once again when dealing with 20 to 30 orders at a
time my focus is to get the items I need then If the store has Minimum Order
requirement I may shift parts to that store to meet it, Or if the Store has a
unique item I try to make the order make sense, I also consolidate the orders
to the fewest possible to save on shipping costs. Again I normally buy 10-15K
parts at a time and to have to go through the list because I lost the list of
items in a cart is very time consuming, It's bad enough when you place a
order and the seller doesn't even have the courtesy to notify the buyer of
any shortages. It is very easy to buy those items later as long as you know what
the items are and don't have to spend hours figuring it out. The 30 minute
feature is nice if you see it, but unless you refresh the store/cart by adding
items in it, It would be nice if this message came up on any active window that
would be refreshed it may be hours before you come back to the store. I agree
with a previous post that said it would be nice for the store to see if there
is a potential buyer with items in their cart. Than the seller could either wait
before they close the store or try to notify the buyer they are closing their
store, although the notification should be done through the BL message system
where it's more likely to be seen. Jill

When an item is added to the cart the price is then set as long as the item remains
in the cart. If the seller changes the price before you check out the original
price is still what you pay (weather the new price is lower or higher).

As for the store terms the current terms at checkout are what is used even if
they are only recently changed. The terms are included on the bottom of the
checkout page (where shipping method and payment currency are selected) by clicking
submit you are agreeing to the terms that are shown on that page, it is the contract
that you are signing so it is worth at least skimming (if you have already read
the terms, or reading completely if you have not) to make sure no extra fees
have been added while you were browsing the store.
