Seller Ships to My Country Store: Gone to Pieces
Hi,

I just wanted to start by sying what a fantastic site this is. I'm very new
here, having decided to sell some of my childhood lego, and I arrived here searching
for multiple parts that I need to complete old sets, and I had no idea such a
site existed. I can't beleive how addictive this is, and it is almost like
being a kid again. So thanks for such a wonderful site.

I do have a couple of observations regarding possible improvements, though, but
feel free to just ignore me if I'm talking rubbish

Firstly, I have loads of lego without instructions, and I was wondering if it
was possible to search the catalogue sets, against the parts that you own, so
that you can get suggestions of what can be built from lego parts you own, with
maybe percentages of parts that you have to complete other sets. So maybe a search
tells you that you have 95% of the parts to complete a set, and you then might
go out and purchase these parts to complete a set.

Secondly, I have a bunch of sets that I would like to sell, but I'd prefer
to sell them as an auction rather than nominate a fixed price. I know I can do
this on ebay, but wouldn't an auction at a place like this, where there is
a worldwide market of enthusiasts, work so much better? I wouldn't extend
this to individual parts, as I think what you have here works brilliantly for
individual parts, but for the sets, I think an auction would work great here.

Thirdly, I have found the Wanted List to be an unbelievably useful tool, but
one frustration I have is that when I attempt to add an item to my Wanted List
that is already on there I get the oops message, even though I still want this
item added. Could this not be tweaked a little, so that you have the option to
edit your wanted item at this stage, such as you do when you add a new item to
your Wanted List?

Anyway, thank for the fab site, and keep up the good work.

There's already a limited ability to find sets based on the parts you have:
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogIn.asp
But what you are describing exists on a different site, rebrickable.com

Secondly, I have a bunch of sets that I would like to sell, but I'd prefer

We used to have auctions, and I hope we will again one day.
Meanwhile, the Unsorted Lot feature is probably your best bet.

If you want to add the same item several times because it is part of several
sets/builds you wish to complete, the best solution would be to create several
wanted lists.

Love your idea and agree and auction option would be great on a site like this.
I have done a few ebay with a couple sets but found it to be very time consuming
and their fees high for smaller volume people like you and I who are trying to
sell personal inventory and are not resellers. (No offense to the great resellers
out there!) A close friend who is a Lego enthusiast recommended bricklink to
me and I agree it is wonderful! Also, it would seem logical that Lego enthusiasts
and resellers alike would benefit from an auction type option. Another option
perhaps would be a best offer option with the seller setting the preferred selling
price but letting others know they will entertain offers. Best wishes!

Auctions were removed when they went to multiple currencies,
You can put something like "Feel free to make offer" in your item description
if you have room to move on the set.

Thanks for the info on CatalogIn and rebrickable. CatalogIn has already allowed
me to find a couple of sets I hadn't instructions for, by identifying a couple
of strange looking pieces and seeing what sets they appeared in. Only problem
is identifying names and codes of parts lol, but I'll get there in the end.

Appreciate the comment regarding seperate Wanted Lists, but this seems rather
convoluted when the simple adjustment I mentioned would make things so much simpler.

Shame the auctions were discontinued, as I really feel they would be successful.
I understand the currency issue, but isn't that same issue present with the
current system, and the currency convertor that Bricklink uses seems more than
adequate to me. Maybe there are issues I am not comprehending, but I guess it's
back to ebay for me for this aspect

Anyway, thanks for all your helpful responses, and good luck getting that Deathstar
at 80%+ off lol.

Parts often have a stamped number.
Find that, with a magnifying glass and bright light, and you're set.

Appreciate the comment regarding seperate Wanted Lists, but this seems rather

No new features will be added to the site.
So make the best of it. You might find it easier to create the original list
using an offsite tool like BrickStore, then uploading after it's all the
way you want it.

The site was built from scratch by one programmer.
Multi-currency was stuck into the middle of things late in development, it was
one of the last features that Admin Dan worked on before passing. He didn't
have time to fix whatever was wrong with the auction feature that made multiple
currencies an issue- and it can't possibly be fixed now. So no auctions until
we see BL 2.0, at the earliest.

There is as big an array of LEGO available for auction on Ebay. I prefer Bricklink
to Ebay because prices are set and I know what I'm getting into as a buyer.
On Ebay I will bid up to the Bricklink price, and any fool who pays more gets
the sale.

Let's keep auctions on the auction site. Yes it's frustrating to be outbid
on Ebay and to see the same item turn up here at a giant markup, but that's
LEGO and collecting and buying and selling.

Auctions also work only in certain timezones depending on what you have for sale.
But the stability of prices here and certainty of supply is a strength of Bricklink.
Auctions would make it a lottery and a whole lot less useful for planning multiple
purchases relative to shipping costs and currency conversion.

Bricklink is like a manual car for sellers - the price point takes a degree of
skill, but that is part of the art.

Anyways, I also dislike auctions (or anything as a matter of fact) on eBay. Prices
are too inflated and many of the bidders have no idea of what they are doing.
I think auctions here would cater to a more interested public and could be made.
Auctions here would be different from those on eBay.

But the price guide for auctions should be separated from the normal one.

I worry about unethical sellers having the same lot up for sale and for auction,
and then the messy exchanges of communication because a set isn't available,
and "oh, I made a mistake" - meanwhile, the buyer has bulked up an order to save
on postage and is left high and dry.

Sell here or sell there. I don't see a problem that needs solving.

The auction feature did not affect the price guide.
That issue became obvious almost immediately, it was fixed before I joined the
site.

I worry about unethical sellers having the same lot up for sale and for auction,

Auction lots had the same listing policy as any other lots.
Listing an item at fixed price and also as an auction would be like parting out
a set, but list the whole set also. It certainly would violate site policy.

I appreciate all the points made and agree with them.

A feature of Ebay is the scarcity of "buy it now" items (mostly grossly inflated
in price, but not always) versus auction, and therefore there is no price certainty.

I recently bid on a large collection of individual items which would have been
economical to ship as an entire lot, but only won one. It cost me money and cost
the seller time, in having to handle over a dozen separate lots to winning buyers.
I may have only been outbid by 50 cents or a dollar.

Just be careful what you wish for....

I'm only one of 400,000 odd members and celebrate the forum as the place

enhance things for some, and detract for others.

If this became an auction site, I'd just go to Ebay full time.

You really seem bent on missing the point.
We had auctions as a separate feature. In addition to 40 million fixed-price
items.

People could choose to list lots either way, and generally auction lots were
things that would not normally sell at a fixed price. I personally sold batches
of used minifig parts this way, for example. Listing those worn pieces individually
for low prices was not cost effective. Taking a pic, listing it with the promise
of selling, that was cost effective.
