I am sure both admin and development have had a lot of messages concerning the
next release, and I am also sure they have their own agenda of priorities e.g.
making the site secure etc., however; I would like to put another point to them
for consideration.

As the back end of the site is a SQL database and we are SQL people, we would
like to see much more use of the capabilities which exist within the database
itself. For example when we go to catalogue - color guide and look at the page
we would like a sort option to appear so that the information can be sorted by
color name; no parts, no sets, wanted, etc. In an ideal world the headings for
each of the columns woluld simply need to be clicked on to arrange the sort.
This applies to not only the color guide but also in other areas on the site
e.g. inventory, orders etc.

We would also like to see a way to use the data mining capabilities e.g. what
part comes in the most colours? Or which category is most associated with a particular
color or group of colours e.g. Star Wars - grays etc;

There are very long winded ways of doing some of the above at present, but it
would be very helpful if thoughts could go into how we make this an easier process
in the next release.

When I mentioned this in an earlier post, someone suggested a management reporting
capability (either online or offline)- maybe something like Brickstore (but
something that would be supported and or looked after)

I will also go back to a very old suggestion which is becoming increasingly more
important to us. We need the ability to have multiple logins to our store with
permission capabilities set up against each login - from administrator to clerical.
We now have two separate locations for our Lego store - one for picking and one
for packing and processing. Both need access to the store and orders and without
using my login we cannot achieve that. As we continue to grow the store (2,000
items at launch and over 91,000 now)this capability has become more important
and, of course, thee is no real way around it other than using the owner's
login and password.

The entire philosophy behind Bricklink was to provide an opportunity for the
Lego people around the world to acquire what they need in the simplest fashion
possible. The next release needs to go much further in making this process simpler
and easier, not only for the buyher but also the sellers and the 'Bricklink
Experts' that are out there.

Anybody else got any thoughts on this and other features/requirements for the
next release?

Voted yes, both of those have been suggested before but that puts them into a
nice summary! I think generally, that approach of giving users more control of
search is 100% better than making BL more complex than it already is by introducing
hundreds of micro options to suit different users. If that logic can be used
to simplify the screens and make it more user intuitive without reducing the
existing functionality I think that would be good. That said, I personally wold
like all this put on hold until the current site functionality is fully restored
- password changes, splash page HTML, personal details, etc - these are all priorities
IMO above a rewrite which is going to take some time ..if it's going to be
better than the current site that is.

Multiple logins with different permissions - an absolute need without a doubt.

What I would add from myself, and sorry if this has been suggested before, is
to see which exact items bring visitors to your shop.

So you would be able to look at he log and see how many visitors came in through
part searches, from the shop-list, from wanted-email notifications and a alike.

It would be nice to have a function or setting in the search screen to allow
for the searching of stores both opened, closed or both (default search would
be for open store only unless selected otherwise...?) As a buyer I find the need
of a misb set not found in the search of opened stores only or bulk parts say
1000's of 1 element type that may not be seen in all of the opened store
but this item or quantity maybe in a closed store and most of the time is. From
selecting this type search you can then make contact with the seller and place
an order....? I can only see this as possibly increasing orders placed and making
Bricklink more competitive to buyers out there...

hmmm, interesting but I can see a few problems.

1. I close my store because I either do not want to or cannot fulfil orders (e.g.
I'm ill, on vacation) so do not want such enquiries in that situation.

2. some members use a closed store just for their own stuff and have no intention
of currently selling it (rightly or wrongly).

3. some closed stores would not want you to see their current prices (or what
they have).. been closed a while, would want to review before opening, etc

I guess that would need some 2nd level of store closure for sellers to set...
I'm closed but I welcome enquiries. I'm not convinced this is good though,
you either want to sell and open or you don't.

worse still, seller uses it to manipulate the market or invite offers for things
he does not have on hand which is forbidden here.

List new set for attractive price in closed store... get enquiry... I'm closed,
opening in 2 weeks, place order and I send it then (seller goes to buy item).

Not allowed here for good reason.

right.. the idea didnt look as bad until you brought this one up.

Probably the single most important reason for this option not being here right
now, and not being here in the futureof currently selling it

What about : I want to buy rare part "X" which only a few store have at price
too high for me but I know about closed stores that may or not open one day which
have it for cheaper, I am patient and I can wait for a better price to come around,
especially if I know it could. Stores that do not want to be bothered when closed
could be able to set the "contact store" on a do not disturb mode.

But the market prices do fluctuate and can be manipulated. An example is you
require 15,000 elements of the same type and colour, you purchase say half of
the several thousand elements of.... P/N 3794 in grey for 0.014 cents each when
the next calendar month comes around and you need the other half of the amount
of the same item you hit the same element again, prices have moved down a few
cents with the major seller who know how to play the game, not much but over
the life of a project enough to make a big difference in savings.

Like you said in around way where here to buy and sell at the end of the day,
I'd add and there are other places to buy and sell be it a bricks and mortar
store or other e-store or lego, it's only that bricklink has made it a did
easier to get quantity and range,

I still think It's a good idea, sometime you don't want to deal with
a seller, or the postage is too high or the sellers terms and conditions are
full of BS, Yes the idea is the diamond in the rough stage, but with a bit of
design cutting and shutting this would be refined maybe to make buyers and sellers
see the pros of this, it would only showing the item is available in a store,
with colours, quantity etc shown as is in the normal store open setting, only
that pricing is not show to "protect sellers ". From there the buyer can initiate
further contact with the seller, if the seller so wishes to further proceed with
a sale and if so be it at delay time or date

Still not convinced due to potential abuse. Not my call, not my site but I'd
say open store = stock visible and immediately available, closed store = not,
keep it simple.

The entire philosophy behind Bricklink was to provide an opportunity for the
Lego people around the world to acquire what they need in the simplest fashion
possible. The next release needs to go much further in making this process simpler
and easier, not only for the buyer but also the sellers and the 'Bricklink
Experts' that are out there.

Anybody else got any thoughts on this and other features/requirements for the
next release?

Robert

worse still, seller uses it to manipulate the market or invite offers for things
he does not have on hand which is forbidden here.

List new set for attractive price in closed store... get enquiry... I'm closed,
opening in 2 weeks, place order and I send it then (seller goes to buy item).

But the market prices do fluctuate and can be manipulated. An example is you
require 15,000 elements of the same type and colour, you purchase say half of
the several thousand elements of.... P/N 3794 in grey for 0.014 cents each when
the next calendar month comes around and you need the other half of the amount
of the same item you hit the same element again, prices have moved down a few
cents with the major seller who know how to play the game, not much but over
the life of a project enough to make a big difference in savings.

yes prices can be effected this way but this is NATURAL fluctuation. Also, if
sellers would really know the game and look a little further than only the number
showing avg price, I think the price decrease would not be the first thing on
the list, seeing the increasing demand of the part
In any case, this is not an excuse to say "there is a way to manipulate the prices
already, so let's introduce yet another one"

Like you said in around way where here to buy and sell at the end of the day,
I'd add and there are other places to buy and sell be it a bricks and mortar
store or other e-store or lego, it's only that bricklink has made it a did
easier to get quantity and range,

yes there are other places to buy and sell, but if you want to be selling the
same exact item at dozens of places.. you want a bit too much. Look at this as
at marriage. You marry one person, so you better stick with him/her or deal with
consequences if you get caught

I still think It's a good idea, sometime you don't want to deal with

"Protect sellers" from what? From selling the pieces too cheap? This is not an
auction site where you can pick your buyers according the prices they offer.
Or I just completely misinterpreted your words right here..?
From there the buyer can initiate

further contact with the seller, if the seller so wishes to further proceed with
a sale and if so be it at delay time or date.

So IS the item available for sale or ISN'T it??
Available - put in on sale.
Not available - put it into your stockroom or close the whole store all together.
If you are only able to get to your clients once every two weeks then write it
all over your store and let your buyers know.

I would really like to see a standardization of all the "extra fees" that sellers
are enforcing on their buyers...

We all are here to sell LEGO. Not your time picking and packing the lots, not
your services of driving the package to the post office and so on.

If you are taking extra care to pack the stuff then it's brilliant, but there
should not be a way for sellers to have cheap items in the shop but then add
a load of fees on top it all.

Also, buyers should not be worrying about getting charged some extra fee that
they missed in shop's TOS.

All the extra fees could be system-enforced to appear on the very top of each
shop's main page.

Every seller would need to tick few boxes indicating what kind of extra fees
he has (or has not), and that gets automatically reflected in store's main
page in some simple, graphic way. Also, maybe a few words about explaining the
fees.

On top of that, for world-class programmers it's not that hard to automatically
show/add the fees before checkout. If certain tick-boxes are selected by the
seller (lot fees, for example), then for each lot which meets the criteria (settings
set by the seller too) the fee is automatically added and shown for the buyer.

This would level-out the field for everyone. If the seller has some basic fees
- no problem! But lets make it so it's easy for each buyer to see and understand
them just from a quick glance at the shop, and without having the need to read
2000 words!

If seller wants to add any other fees - well too bad. INCLUDE ALL
YOUR COSTS into your listing prices!!

I also quickly sketched a very basic way of how it could look. Just a very, very
genera idea.

I'm new to brick links so I may have just missed it, if it is possible.
But I have a wanted list, I don't really want to buy all the pieces from
several shops, I really want to buy as many of the items from the one store as
I can.

Can you make a link when viewing the wanted list, as to which stores have x amount
of items on your list available with.
Say I have a wanted list of 140 items (which I do, and 3000 pieces.)
List the stores which stock those items.
in order of how many of the items.
one store might have all 140, the next might have 150.
And
List the stores which stock those items with their min quantity.
One store might have 120, another 100..

Just a thought, at the moment I haven't been able to see how to do this,
except go to the biggest stores, and auto fill out the wanted list.

Under 'wanted list' do a query 'by shop'.

http://www.bricklink.com/wantedShop.asp

This gives you the stores with most items of your wanted list. Still a matter
of weeding through, as some might have higher minimums, lot limitations, depending
on location, shipping might vary a lot, so bascily, it's a guide and you
need to simply 'learn' what the best options are (sometimes it's
cheaper to buy from 2 sellers, bacause as a whole, including shipping, it's
still cheaper compared to 1 seller with high fees and shippingcosts, etc...).

Ah thankyou, still getting used to the site and all the 'tricks of the trade.'

Any thought of making this a little more mobile device friendly?
While this does work on my mobile devices I think the website would load a lot
quicker and faster if there was a separate mobile oriented template.
Or maybe an app that may not include the buying portion but everything else?
