I know in Canada, even for small packages, I have about 5 options I can give
people. But items that are individual things like how fast, insurance/ no insurance,
thickness depends on how I pack things.
I know I have found even on-line quotes to be unreliable, so I pretty well bring
in 60% of my orders to the post office first.
Do I wish I could give someone a total instantly, but it's unlikely to be ever
true.

| Me too. What I do is email the seller before checking out, telling them the weight
of the cart and ask for all additional fees and postage costs.

What an original suggestion. 
You're not the first who thinks of it, it's been suggested many many times.
Due to the kind of orders it's not easy to say x weight = x amount total.
Perhaps for sets it would be possible but not for parts.
The packaging issue is the main problem, some parts weight nothing but need to
be shipped as parcel.
Personally I prefer pulling an order first to determine exact postage over automated
checkout.

I know it can't be perfectly accurate, but perhaps it could have a ballpark range
(like: $2.50-3$ or 10-12$). even tho it would not be binding, it would still
help.
perhaps it could be a legitimate reason to cancel order, if shipping ended up
more than, say, a dollar or 2 outside the estimate.
