From what I can recall, the auction system discontinued due to a huge added administrative
burden. It was popular and had a lot of potential. Eric should consider hiring
a small team to restore, develop, and maintain the system. If necessary, there
could be higher fees, or tiered fees, in the auction format to make the concept
worthwhile. I think the BrickLink community was fairly unanimous it its disappointment
over losing the feature, so putting it to a vote won't prove much, just reiterate
what is already known.

I miss the auctions too ... although I do recall the reason for their being discountinued
as lacking support and following Flea-bay's lead in going to fixed price listings
... can't remember if it was Dan stating his rationale or not ... as a man of
mystery he didn't often say why he did things the way he did

True, a major part of the reason he discontinued it was its *lack* of
popularity. The relatively little use the feature got didn't justify the resources
allocated to it.

You got my vote there: YES
I wasn't around when the auctions took place, in fact they were removed in the
period I started selling (around the time Admin Dan implemented multiple currencies),
don't know when exactly...
The other day I listed 2 particular items, and I thought: Is this to high (or
to low)? Would an auction site be better? Would it look bad for my store or not
(not that I care, anyone could send a private mail with an offer)...I was lucky,
1 out of 2 sold quickly , the other one, well it can stay there for years...
'An auction on it I would like' to say it in Yoda's words
Multiple currencies shouldn't be a problem, it works on other auction sites
Important:
Shippingcosts should be mentionned.
Notifications of the auction should be send out to buyers who have it on their
wnated list
Time frame: selectable 1 week/2 weeks/1 mounth (max)
OK, auctions were removed during the change towards multiples currencies, but
also because less profitable for the BL owners. Not sure: if an item stays in
an inventory for a couple of years, it is not profitable anyway, an auction with
a lower starting bid might not give the same fees, but at least it got sold (rapidly)and
will provide fees...
An example: the Eifel tower, yes I'm interested in buying and surely a seller
is interested of selling.
He lists it at 1000 Euro, I find that to high (and probably many others as well).
Result: the items stays there for a long time, untill the seller decides to lower
his/her price.
If the seller puts it an auction with a minimum of 600 Euro, he'll have some
attention and the buyers will try to get it (620,650,680,700, 800, whatever)
The buyer gets what he wants at the price he wanted to spend, the seller got
his minimum and doesn't need to worry 'did I priced it too high', BL shouldn't
worry, as either fees are paid within 1 mounth, either the item stays there 'forever'(no
fees)...
I would love to put some things on auction
Cheers, Eric

| By the time I starting selling auctions were gone. I think they would be great
to reinstate, I would be willing to pay a little bit more. If I was going to
use it, it would be for larger items, multiple sets, unsorted lots, etc.
If admin reads this and wants to make more money from me they can.

There are only 2,300 open suggestions dating back to 2010.
These could be completely resolved and closed out within a single 40-hour work
week. That doesn't mean completely solved, but certainly sorted through and
added to a roadmap.
Instead of sorting through customer feedback, could I interest you in a new
and exciting BrickLink program you did not ask for and had no idea you needed?

Marketplaces should be designed to minimize transaction costs. Depending upon
the nature of what is being sold, different marketplace structures accomplish
this. (Note: the casual economist might not realize that transactions BELOW
the highest price are a type of transaction cost.)
Auctions work best where the market is thin and the true market clearing price
is difficult for a seller to intuit. There is no need to auction bulk white
bricks. There is an absolute need to auction a store display from the 70's.
I would argue that most Buyers of hard-to-find or unusual items are already visiting
Bricklink regularly. Public ignorance of Bricklink may cause inexperienced sellers
to list on other sites, but Bricklink would immediately become the premier auctioneer.
Once that happens, Buyers will be able to spend less time searching.
And Bricklink might make a few extra dollars.
A quick note on the argument against this suggestion: Auctions required more
administrative time than the (much smaller) site could devote. FleaBay's
fees are much higher than Bricklink's. I would not be surprised if the fees
for auctions needed to be higher. That is also a transaction cost, but Sellers
who felt it was too high could always just list the item the same way that they
do today.
I voted "Yes" when I saw this. Turns out, I was just repeating my actions from
the distant past.

My expectation is that this is the exact type of item that sellers would want
to sell via auction.
The other is bulk lots.

I'm not so sure it will be colorful in RI this year. We, like the west coast,
have been classified as Extreme Drought conditions. So I think it will be an
early leaf drop with lots of browning. It is downright crunchy here - I gave
up on my gardens. We need rain!
